Sadly I'm guessing he didn't succeed.

It's also amazing how safe Motorsport is today. F1 cars can crash at insane speeds and make it look almost serene.

That's Roger Williamson (in the car) and David Purley trying to save him in the Dutch Grand Prix, despite the marshalls best attempts to leave him to die. Sadly he did die, despite talking to Purley and screaming for help.

I can't watch it, as it disturbs me too much.

There was another horrible one a few years later at Kyalami where a Welsh driver called Tom Pryce died. An Italian driver's car had caught fire at the side of the track and 2 marshalls ran across carrying fire extinguishers before they were told it was safe. One of them was hit by Pryce's car and virtually torn in half by the impact. The extinguisher he was carrying hit Pryce's helmet, the chin strap of which almost tore his head off. His car then carried on down the straight at high speed with him dead at the wheel before crashing at the next corner.

Nothing like settings off on a Grand Prix surrounded on both sides by 5* Aviation 105 Octane Fuel in a thin gauge Ali tank..

Madness when considered in today's technology

I watched a short documentry about that crash. The marshalls originally thought David Purley was the driver trying to save his own car. Very sad  :sad1:

Didn't Purley later survive a 100g+ crash?
