Title: Brake compatibility?
Post by: vRS_Pagey on January 09, 2012, 07:11:24 pm
After fitting my freshly powder coated S3 front set up it has highlighted how incredible gash the rears look......
So I need to source a set of replacement calipers for my vRS (same as mk5 GTi) as a temporary measure so I can send my current ones off for refurbishment.  Can anyone confirm what others will fit?  Obviously the S3/R32 have bigger brakes but what about the Cupra or the A3 3.2 Quattro?

Thanks in advance Lee.

i believe the A3 3.2 quattro shares it's complete brake set up with the S3 (with the exception of those fancy "S3" pins on the front calipers)

While we're talking brakes I'd like to clarify something.
I've seen a few threads referring to Cupra/R32/S3 brakes.
Are the front brakes on the Cupra bigger/more powerful than the brakes on the ED30?
If so that's crazy as its pretty much the same engine.

I personally don't think the rears look that bad, certainly look a lot bigger than the rears on MKIV golfs.

I know a lot of people want to change the rears for looks but I really can't see it making much difference at all.

Yes Cupra share the same brakes as R32/S3

Ed30 shares same brakes as Gti

Think it has to do with the state of tune from the factory which denotes which brakes you get

Iirc Cupra 240 Ed30 226

Vw obviously thought the 312mm setup was sufficient for the extra 26 ponies  :stupid:

The annoying thing is I had the complete S3 set up which included a pair of nearly new 310mm vented rears and pads, but I had to sell them to recover some of the cost.  It was a hard decision based on the condition of them and mine and the larger size etc, but right before Christmas I had no choice.  :sad1:

It is strange that across the range the R32/S3/Cupra and A3 3.2 have the same fronts, but the Cupra has the smaller rears and the ED30 has a bog standard GTi set up.  Far enough it leaves the factory running 14 ponies less than the Cupra but a stage 1 map can knock on the door of 300..........madness really!  :stupid:

Fwik all FWD PQ35 modells from 200 to 230 BHP share the same setup:  312 mm + 286 mm.*

All AWD PQ35 modelle from 250 to 272 BHP share almost** the same as well:  345 mm + 310 mm (both vented).

The Leon Cupra is a mixture from both: 345 mm + 286 mm.

Check ESP setting via VCDS. There's a 17" option.

*Mk.VI GTI incl. ED35 just 272 mm on rear

**different pads though (even S3 has a different compound than A3 3.2)

Has anyone got any installation pics of an R32\S3 rear brake upgrade?

Is it a simple fit? As in R32 disc, caliper and carrier for straight on? No modifying?
