I'm getting quotes from dopes in the parts department of €119-€400 a side.
Anyone here quoted a recent figure?
-
bought a brand new headlight from a company on ebay for £150, no ballast or ignitor, just the actual casing
-
Don't forget you'll need the levelling system and headlamp washers to be legal with the new MOTs coming in...
-
I need to replace a unit which is cracked and letting in water. So I guess everything will need replacing?
No worries about MOT as it's factory fitted xenon
-
Aww cool...

No, only if washers & levelers are fitted are they tested. If they're not fitted then they aren't tested. MOT testers manual, section 1.7. :happy2:

I'm pretty sure you have to have levellers and washers for xenons

2012 changes;
Lighting
Products on the lens or light source that obviously reduce the light's intensity or change its colour will become a reason for failure – applies to front/rear position lamps, registration plate lamps, stop lamps, rear fog and direction indicators,
Headlight requirements are updated to take account of the particular characteristics of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps.
HID headlights can cause dazzle if they are dirty or aimed too high so car manufacturers must fit headlamp cleaning and levelling systems. car will fail if a mandatory headlamp cleaning or levelling system is missing, doesn't work or is obviously defective.
Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems.
If a headlamp bulb is not seated correctly the resulting beam pattern will be indistinct and this will result in a test fail.
-
Not gonna get into (another) argument, but if you follow the link I posted above to the Official MOT testers online manual, you'll find what I've said is correct. Your section bolded stating
"Vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID systems must also be fitted with properly working washer and levelling systems."
is not from the MOT test or VOSA. :happy2:
Edit: It's from the AA who are trying their best to make a dogs dinner of the MOT test in their own words.

:popcornsoda: I need to see these and where did you getr them?
-
if you purchase ONLY the OEM xenon headlight housing from the dealers that will be all you will need as your current bulb/igniter/ballast are OK im assuming and you'll be able to swap these over to the new unit, simple bolt on/bolt off for the ballast, and the ignitor/bulb/bulb holder ring are self explanatory

I think you're looking in the region of £233.19 plus VAT for an OEM unit from the dealer. I was quoted this price last year but it might've changed a bit since then possibly?

btw...would probably be a good idea if you contacted your local TPS to see if you could get it any cheaper through them, and/or when you purchase across the parts counter ask if they can do you a discount, i usually get 10/15% off on more expensive items (£50+) so its always worth asking!

Hi
TPS is your local VW Trade Parts Specialist
http://www.thetradepartsspecialists.co.uk/
search on there to find your local one, they USUALLY are cheaper than going to your dealership first and are more likely to carry stock of the item (think of them as a eurocarparts but VAG only!)
the birmingham TPS is amazing tbh, i had a nightmare getting hold of a slave cylinder for my tdi yesterday, including being given the runaround by both eurocarparts and andrew page, in the end TPS had 5 on the shelf!
good luck!
