Title: Large smoke when accelerating hard Golf GT TDI mk5
Post by: smokey on January 11, 2012, 07:31:52 pm
Hiya Guys

I've only had my car for a few months and its been driving well.

Getting 500+ out of a tank and averaging 50mpg on the midline dash or 47 on Fuelly.

Tonight when i was driving home, i noticed when i floored it in 1st or 2nd gear there was quite abit of smoke left behind me. 1st time i really noticed it as it could see the smoke the reflection of the cars lights behind me.

The car had a new Turbo when i bought it so i dont think it is that. I can hear the turbo whistle when i go through the gears around 2000 to 3000 revs which again i think is normal.

I know diesels do dump smoke due to being unburnt, new to them though so just checking.

The car was up to temp at 90c

I do have VCDS so is there any diagnostics i can run to check anything or see how the performance of the car is when driving it?

Thanks guys

sounds normal to me kidda.mates got  a gt tdi and his is exactly the same, when booting it, so as long as its running sweet i wouldnt worry about it.

I have noticed this lately on my gt tdi. Usally happens in 2nd and 3rd. It doesnt do it all the time so it may be because of the weather or the engine being not fully warmed up. But i got a major service in a few weeks so i will see if that makes any difference to it but i think it just because it a deisel

which gt tdi have you got? 140? or 170? if its the 170 with the dpf filter? it shouldnt really smoke as i was aware, also when you say white smoke is it condensation or a cloud of white smoke?

I've got the 140.

I would say a small cloud and its only when i go from stop to high throttle in 1st gear. I'm doing this when the engine has warmed up btw. I cant see anything when i rev high in other gears.

due to it being a 140 it wont have the dpf filter, so you will get some soot out the back, once the water temp gauge shows it is up to temp doesnt mean the oil inside the engine is so be careful there, also saying white smoke? doesnt sound like soot so unless its condensation it could be a number of things. but chances are everything is fine. has the water header tank had any change in colour (oil colour) or level drop?

Hey Guys

Update on this.

Well over the last few weeks not really noticed anything. I did again today but i think its probably due to the cold weather was 1.5 degrees today.
I check the water header tank and its clean, no oil in it etc.

I think your right that its just the characteristic of the diesel and i'm probably worrying about nothing!!

if your noticing it at night, its perfectly normal... your dumping a lot of exhaust gases when you boot it and thats why it looks like smoke through the lights of the car behind you...

every now and again (once a week or so) take the car for a good 'run' and it should keep everything clear of gunk mostly. my 1.9tdi barely smokes at all only if really really really driven hard, comparing that to my brothers honda accord 2.2cdti which smokes like an old steam train its shocking! but apparently thats 'normal' for a honda!lol

there's a reason they're called soot chuckers  :rolleye:
