Title: Charcoal Canister
Post by: Matt_greig on January 15, 2012, 06:11:50 pm
I'm having problems with my EVAP system and the exhaust emissions light on the dash, so I want to change the charcoal canister to see if that solves the problem.
Anybody know where I can get hold of one and how much they cost? Oh and it's for a MK5 GTI

Cheers.

If its the charcoal canister and a new one fixes it. (or even of not)

Avoid filling your tank all the way full ('brimming') as it causes the charcoal canister to fail

Hi Mike.

Does filling the tank as much as possible cause damage to this then? So standing there attempting to squeeze every last penny in there's not too great an idea huh?

Cheers, Andy.

Aswell as having to carry around the extra weight (unless really necessary) It is said (there are several posts on here) that brimming the tank causes it to fail  :happy2:

On the same note, I have the same emissions fault as Mike....  :sad1:

I checked the canister and the hoses looked fine but then I followed it back to this box:

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1223.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fdd510%2Ftartanmartin85%2Fimage.jpg&hash=7a2644f7d873b38a8273fa960509cf817abde960)

Is it supposed to look like this (apologies for blurry - it was dark)? The white part looks like it should be inside that box and also it looks like the edges of that box are open. Does this look normal? What is this box? Could this be the source of my flow problems?

I sent the pic to Mike last night, he was going to check his.

Cheers!

Sorry, just to explain, it is below the coolant sphere and is connected to the canister on the other hose leading away from the engine......

Sorry Mike, I meant Matt  :ashamed:

I thought it looked damaged, unfortunately I can't tell what it is so need some advice from anyone who has a good knowledge of engines....
