When I was messing around trying to change the red LCD panel on the dash I stuck in the wrong dials which made everything spaz out a bit. I then put in the correct bits, had to get my power steering back by doing the full lock etc but now the Electronic Stability Control is permanently off. This has not been an issue as its a pain in the arse in a 180bhp TDi but now with the new MOT regs I am worried it will fail.
My mechanic has tried to reset it but it keeps coming on, any ideas where to start, what it might be and how much it might cost?

What is the fault your mechanic is trying to reset - did he give you a printout of the code?
Hopefully you've not damaged your modules, have you activated this procedure in error? As the light weon't go off until it's completed http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/ESP_System_Function_Test_%28Conti/Teves%29 (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/ESP_System_Function_Test_%28Conti/Teves%29)

I do have some of the code etc that came up, I will need to dig them out. I have a feeling that I have damaged something as all the lights were going crazy when I put in the wrong clocks, replacing a module going to cost a bomb isn't it?
How can I restart ESP system test as this could be the issue, I remember driving all the way home with no power steering and then getting it sorted shortly afterwards buy doing the drive forward/full lock routine but maybe I didn't do it all correctly.

Can't recall if you need VCDS to fulfill the test if activated, it was a couple of years ago I did it and remember finding an empty car park and doing figure of 8s for a few minutes.
Edit: check the link for info on how to complete the test, worth trying for sure
