Title: Shadow Blue GT TDI 140
Post by: OldSpeckledBen on January 20, 2012, 08:42:07 pm
Well after selling my Type R, due to its drink problem, I decided I wanted economy again as I had an Ibiza FR TDi before the Type R and although it's not a GTI  it's a GT TDI 140

It took me a while to find the specification I wanted but the waiting and looking everywhere paid off and found this Shadow Blue GT TDI with Xenons, heated leather, dual zone climate, ipod integration, cruise control, the full MFD display, multifunction steering wheel and rear tinted windows.

After a few days of having the car I debadged the Golf and 2.0 so it now just says TDI, hopefully people will think its a 1.9

I also bought a K&N panel filter which seems to make the car pick up a little quicker, although it could just be in the mind

I plan on doing a few more bits and pieces just to make it my own, maybe some different wheels, colour code the rear bumper and some R32/Edition 30 rear lights.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone gives

Here's a couple of pics of my Golf;

And then today something turned up courtesy of DPM performance, who I can highly recommend

A mate of mine will be fitting them in a couple of weeks.

Nice car mate. Looks a good spec and in the best colour  I'd take all the badges off. They won't know what it is then. Plus makes the rear look alot cleaner.

There some awesome Honda's you've had there   especially the DC5 Integra, i love them.
I had an EP3 Premier Edition Civic which was completly standard, although I do miss the power a little, I took that to the Nurburgring, which was an amazing experience and can't wait to go back there in the summer in the Golf.

Cheers mate  :happy2:

Yeah I couldn't quite believe the amount of extras it had when I found it and the fact it was in Shadow Blue was an awesome bonus

Yeah thought about taking them all off but I don't mind showing people they've been beaten by a diesel  I know what you mean about it looking cleaner though, I might take the badge off later on if I get bored one day.

Cheers,
Ben

Very nice example,I see you got the H&R springs over eibachs what are the advantages if any as I'm still deciding.

Yeah I bought the H&R's as they're model specific, these ones are for the GT Golf and they're an even drop of 30mm all round whereas I think the Eibach Sportlines are 25mm front and 20mm back or 50mm front and 35mm back

I didn't really want to go more than 30mm as I know the sump is quite low to the floor on the TDI's, hopefully it doesn't scrape with these springs on, they're being fitted at the beginning of next month  I shall post some pics when its done

Cheers,
Ben

Im thinking the 30's on yours will be fine.. the 35 H&Rs are really meant for the standard golfs not the GT's so that probably why im facing the scraping all the time!  :sad1:

Hopefully they'll be ok  Oh right that doesn't good, that's what i'm worried about the scraping of either the arch or the sump :sad1: as I still want to be able to drive the car enthusiastically   Although the springs are progressive ones so all being well they should be ok.

I like the Classix wheel but I fancy a change in wheel but not in size, I'm going to stick to 17's though  Your wheels will look really smart,my uncle used to have an A4 in that colour and that looked nice  :happy2:
I did think about getting a GTI rear valance but I'm just going to get my standard valance colour coded for now as it's annoying me especially when I clean the car.
I look forward to seeing your car though with the darker wheels  :happy2:

Yeah i'm looking forward to see what it'll look like, MONTE's GTI looks awesome in the other thread
They're being fitted next wednesday so will update with pics as soon as I can  :happy2:

Other small updates, bought some LED numberplate lights, hopefully they'll last

and then I thought I would try some different wax for the car, Chemical Guys SpeedArmour wax and sealant in one. I'm quite a big fan of Chemical Guys products as not only do they do a good job but they all smell amazing

Yeah the standard  rear valance  is pretty basic fo a GT model and lets the car down i think , im getting the exhaust cut out in the gti bumper plastic welded then the top half done silver and bottom insert bit done gloss black like the front grill, i wanted to keep the standard tdi back box as its only done low miles . roll on spring time

Yeah I agree the unpainted part of the bumper is a poor effort from VW  :sad1:
Yours should look really smart when it's done, look forward to seeing that  :happy2:
Mine's hopefully being colour coded next week along with the lowering

Another little update, finally got round to doing what VW should have done as standard and thats colour code that bottom half of the rear bumper  :happy2:

I'm pleased with how it turned out, the only problem I had was tring to get all the clips to go back in, in the end I had to take the whole rear bumper off to sort it, anyway here's a pic,

I was looking into getting wheels but a mate of mine has not long ago bought a mk5 R32 and after seeing and hearing it i'm very tempted to get one  they sound amazing

Mine goes in for a service next wednesday, so while i'm at the dealership I shall see what they can find R32 wise

Its been a while since the last update  :sad1:

I was thinking of getting an R32 but after I looked into how much the tax and running costs were I decided against it, so I'm keeping the TDI for a bit longer

I've now bought a couple of things for the car, so here's a couple of pics,

I went to the Nurburgring last year and saw this but I didn't buy it, so the other day I ordered one from Germany :)
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz267%2Foldspeckledben%2FDSCF1493.jpg&hash=9234f9c57468ac7951d84466d777285ed79e40e7)

I also bought this for the rear badge,
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fzz267%2Foldspeckledben%2FDSCF1495.jpg&hash=6eef0cae4292c0e2e1a122ab429b4c47dc7bfd2b)

Next on the list is the wheels, which i've got and shall be on the car very soon  and then some pressed plates.

Cheers,
Ben

How you finding the ride on the H&R's?

Its very good to be honest, its similar to the standard GT suspension, which I find quite soft after having a Type R, which is rock hard.

The tyre has srubbed only very slightly in the arch on the 18's, it never scrubbed at all on the 17's.

I would highly recommend them though

Cool. I'm on 18" Charlestons and they have a fair bit tuck so hopefully I will be ok. Have you done the rear arb yet? Supposed to tighten the handling up. Think that's the route I'm going, H&R's plus rear arb.

I wish I had the Charlestons, if I did I probably would not have bought the TD's  :signLOL: although I can't believe how much quicker the car turns in and the way it seems to pick up with the TD's

I've not done the rear arb, I never really thought about it tbh.
I shall have a look into it, I don't want to make the back end too stiff, otherwise it gets twitchy

Yeah go for it matey, yours is coming along very nicely indeed  :happy2:

Its been a while since my last update  :sad1:

I've only added these seat inserts since,
Before

After

I also went on a cleaning mission and ended up with reflections like these

Then at the end of last month I took a trip to the Nurburgring which was amazing
The Golf did very well and I was pleased with how well it went, also got there on 1 tank with enough for a lap as well  got to love diesel for that  :happy2:
Here's a couple of pics

Looks great Ben  :congrats:

The seat inserts are such a great mod for little £££'s. Def a must-have mod  :happy2:

I'm loving all the blue Gti more n more n more.

When I saw Jims at Inters it was stunning. The Shadow blue is great because, it's almost black. So you get an amazing colour, but easier to keep clean. Dark glossy cars look gorgeous, esp at night, reflecting lights etc.

Glad you enjoyed the Ring  :driver:
I always wondered how the diesel would do round the track.

Gotta love those MPG's  :pomppomp:

Yeah they're great considering they don't cost much, I think they should've been standard with the car

I love dark coloured cars, especially Shadow Blue, for the reflections but trying to keep it clean is a  :fighting: battle with all the rain we keep having  :sad1:

It was using a lot of diesel on the track though, I think it knocked off 100 miles of range every time I did a lap  :surprised: it was worth it though

Great looking car, shadow blue really does scrub up well!

Where did you source the seat emblems from?

Cheers matey  trying to keep it like that though is a pain.

You can choose from a few but here's the link to mine http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200759047090 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200759047090) I don't think they've got any of the GT in my style currently for sale on Ebay but its worth sending them a message  :happy2:

Nice one cheers  :happy2: glad you like

You'll enjoy your GT, a 3dr is a rare find  :happy2: they're decent car's and go well for a 140bhp diesel.

Nurburg was truly amazing, it was my second vist this year but the first visit in the Golf and it suprised me how good it is  :happy2: So good that i'm now looking at selling the diesel and i'm currently on the hunt for an Edition 30 or Pirelli Edition as I can't justify having a diesel, I don't do that many miles.

Anyone who is a petrolhead needs to go to Nurburg just for the experience, even if you don't drive the ring, the place alone is worth going for

Cheers,

Ben

I've now got a GTi rear valance and a cat back exhaust

I'm very happy with how it turned out, i'm loving the noise when you let off the throttle, the car seems to pick up a lot quicker as well now  :happy2:

The exhaust sounds alright tbh, just a little deeper and doesn't sound too much like a transit haha, I'll try and get a video of it at some point. Its a Cobra cat back that i've got, I can highly recommend it

It's been a very long time since the last update, i've not really done much apart from buying a DA polisher which has been good and I have bought a new camera so here is a few pictures trying out some different effects;

I've also just bought 4 new tyres, i've gone for Michelin Pilot Sport 3's, first impressions are very good but we shall see how they go.

Nice pictures there Ben, we have identical cars other than mine being the petrol version.
Did you encounter any problems, changing the cat back exhaust? that's only thing that bugs me is having the hidden exhaust.

Cheers Rob  :happy2: ah that's cool, have you got a members ride thread??

No problems at all, I originally colour coded the standard bumper but didn't like the hidden exhaust either so I bought myself a GTi rear valance as it's a straight swap, bought that from VW as they're fairly cheap, then got a mate to paint it for me.
Then went up to Cobra exhausts in Sheffield who fitted the exhaust, who I can highly recommend.
The exhaust is non resonated so I imagine would be quite loud on a petrol but it's okay on the diesel, just a little bit more smoke

Hmm a members ride thread, i wouldnt exactly call it a thread mate, there are only about four pictures uploaded.
I did take a few pictures a few weeks ago, but i didnt upload them.

I would like to go down the R32 route with the twin centre rear exhausts, i've had one qoute which was in the £600 region, i felt that was slightly excessive. Sheffield bit of a distance for me mate, as i'm in London.

Interesting reading your feedback about the H & R's as i#ve been contemplating whether to go for them or the Eibach's, i,m leaning more towards the H & R's.

Ahhhhh right okay, it's still good to see another shadow blue Golf

That does seem a little expensive, I can't remember how much I paid, I think it was around £300 but you'll pay more for a resonated one.

Yeah I've been pretty happy with them and would recommend them.

Hey matey, could I ask how you got on with the vredestine sessanta thinking about fitting these to my gti just wondering about you opinions.

Yeah they're alright tbh, in the dry they're very good but in the wet or even damp the grip is pretty average.
I've just bought some Michelin Pilot Sport 3's and I've only had them a few days and they're alot better  :happy2: and they were the same price as the Vredesteins
