Title: Wheel refurb advice
Post by: TimS996 on January 23, 2012, 02:06:44 pm
I need to get some light kerbing damage fixed on a pair of 18" Monza II's. Also at the same time I was wondering about getting the wheels generally cleaned and polished up.

These are the standard VW wheels, no mods.

I was going to try and find somewhere in Manchester/South to take them if anyone has any recommendations.

Apart from the obvious repair, what treatment could I ask for to give them a bit of a spruce up?

Apparently Lepsons of Swindon are the grand masters for refurbing the Monza 11's

I think you will need to get the whole wheel redone if they are original diamond cut finish you will be at least £100 a wheel to refurbish. Post up some pictures so people can see the damage

Not sure if this works but it should link to a photo of the wheel.

Is there a FAQ on here about posting images?

They definitely need a refurb, looks like the diamond cut finish has been wet sanded?

Right. That doesn't sound good. Whats happened and what do i need to get done?

I tried this place - http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/locations/manchester/ (http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk/locations/manchester/) who said they can re diamond cut them for 140+vat per wheel with no warranty, or powder coat all 4 for 250+vat.

I'd like these to look as close as standard as possible so not ure how good a powder coat would look.

WRC in Preston say 430 all in to strip 4 and re diamond cut but also give the warning and no warranty.

Send them to Lepson and have them done again.  I'd be tempted to have them done with black inserts like the mk6 and then it will feel like a well spent mod rather than a forced fix :happy2:

£272 for the set (+VAT) with lepsons including them putting your tyres back on

Thanks. Is that diamond cutting them?

I was thinking
 of the black as well.

Looks like someone has maybe had a go at repairing the wheels by sanding the laquer off and sanding the corrosion away then relaquered them unless they have been left bare metal wouldnt have thought so. 140 a wheel seems a bit steep powdercoating is a good fiish to prevent the corrosion white worm but doesnt look anything like original the only way to get that nice sharp line is diamond cut

Thanks. Lepson have just quoted me 330 for the 4 for the diamond cut and seem very familiar with the problems.

Lepsons also do a loan car now, so you don't even have to takethe wheels off and send them, just drive down there.

I got shadow chrome from the wheel specialist in Fareham (powder coat then silver paint but just a cross the face)  I really like the finish. It's a slightly different look but I really like and it should last.

Side on (the photo makes the wheels look more silver than the really are)

Thats a nice finish.

I've liked these wheels since they first came out , particularly with the grey or black inners, but the diamond drilling makes them difficult to care for and prone to damage.

So the the whole wheel was powder coated then the face painted? None of this cross drilling?

Could I get this done with black inner circles and a silver painted outer?

Try A1 in wolverhampton  :happy2:

they refurbed my Monza 2's with the Black inners and used a special Aston Martin Laquer which doesnt break as easily as the standard BBS / Ronal laquer. Mine have been fine for almost a year now with no "whiteworm".

Mention this forum or Red Robin for a discount.

had mine done in Bristol - Wonderwheels, polished finished rather than the diamond cut, only cost £40 a wheel, they were a mess before hand.....Wheelspecialists are a ripoff, £140 + Vat per wheel is what they quoted me as well!....if you only have the one too do I would says Lepsons are your best bet!

not standard but quite unique, pretty happy!

Refurbed wheel looks nothing like my other 3 and its covered in imperfections.  I should have left it damaged as at least it didn't stick out as badly as it does now.  Really disappointed and they were well over priced even at the "forum" price

Well I think I'll get all four done. Question is whether to go to the extra expense of the diamond cut finish and associated problems, or have it painted like others have done.

For looks they need to be diamond cut.  They can last too, mine look brand new after 6 or so years, only needed a refurb due to a bus pushing me onto a curb.  Just need to make sure you get outside with the mitt and bucket at least once a week during the winter to get the salt off them :happy2:

Thanks Winrya. I have the benfit of a set of steels and snow tyres on for winter - highly recommend them. So the summer tyres sit in the shed and don't get quite as hammered.

Posted these a few times but the thread seems to warrant another...

I had kwikfit mess up both front wheels when I had a puncture and went for two new tyres...
Had all kinds of problems with the wheel specialist... Couldn't mask off properly then the spraying wasn't up to scratch then eventually they sprayed the wrong colour... Don't have the funds to do much about it and have learned to live with it... But most peeps comment they look good...

Powdercoated black with a smoked chrome face finish...
