Post by: rich83 on January 23, 2012, 08:06:27 pm
Does anyone else feel like turd every time they wake up? I never wake up feeling ready and raring to get out of bed.

Any ideas to as why? (and no... i dont sink 10 pints every night  :signLOL: )

Lack of serotonin. Most people suffer from it during the winter, some more than others.

Same here. Apparently its been proven that some people work on different body clocks. It seems that some people genuinely are morning people and some are late risers. They were even allowing a trial of students somewhere to measure the benefits etc..

I can get up at 6am on a Sunday morn to wash the car. But some days I could be in bed till 8 (which for me is late).

A mate I work with suffers with this. SAD I think its called. It does stand for something but can't remember. Something to do with a lack of sunshine lol.

Could also be just down to the amount of sleep your getting vs how tired you are.

Sometimes a desk job can make you a hell of a lot more fatigued by the end of the day than a manual job. It's just you have mental fatigue rather than physical. Sometimes it can be worse and take longer to recover from than physical fatigue.

How fit are you Rich? Do you do any exercise? 30 mins a day can help massively. Something as simple as a brisk walk with a dog if you have one. It will take you a bit to get used too but after 3-4 weeks you will feel the benefits.

If your already quite fit/active then it could be Seasonal Adjustment Disorder (SAD) as has been alluded too above.

Going to bed before 10-30 makes a massive difference to me

Also plenty of exercise helps and NOT staring at a computer screen or tv just before bed. Computer games are a definite no no...

No caffeine, booze is obvious one

As above, good sleep hygiene is essential. Look at your diet too

Carl.. Im 28 but not very fit to be honest, I don't exercise regularly which is something im going to address soon. Im not massively over weight, could do with shedding a stone. I usually go to be between 12 and 2am, so that could be a massive factor.

I always feel at my best in the 2-4 hours before i go to sleep, which is probably why i end up staying up quite late.  :signLOL:

Im glad to hear that im not the only one, its been concerning me over the last 6 months.

There is your main problem. You are going to bed too late 12-2am, hence your body is not really/fully shutting down allowing you to get optimum rest. It is has been established that you are in your deepest sleep at these times.

Also look at your diet as others have said. Not so much about what you eat but the time you eat it.

HTH.

I would actually say look at what you eat, as well as when you eat. Download a sleep diary and fill it in honestly. Then analyse it. Sleep hygiene is important.

Despite saying all that, 50% of the time, there's no physical reason why people are tired.

I'm starting to find this out now having just changed jobs. I spent 5 years working as a Joiner and eventually a Working Site Foreman and i've just changed to a Construction Plant and Machinery Salesman. Although it's not strictly a desk job as i'm out on the road 90% of the time, I was coming home more tired than when I was doing physical work all day which I found strange to start with

Id start doing some exercise in the morning/evening then, should energize you early on and then make you tired before bed.

Once you have a pattern going (and get out of your current one) you will be fine. I cycle to work Tues and Thurs now 40 mile round trip and do a big 50-80 miler at weekend. Body naturally wants to sleep at 10ish at get up at 6-30am. Plus the exercise actually gives you more energy than doing nothing. Plus you get to eat more and still lose weight, double bonus!

I dont eat that badly to be honest, but I do eat at random times due to my occupation. Its been a stressful and long 2/3 weeks so that might no be helping at the moment.

sounds like you're a night owl, same as me. unfortunately the world doesn't sing to our tune, we just have to deal with getting up early  :sad1:

at least at the minute i'm working in A&E so i'm always doing stupid hours. means i get a lot of lie ins, have my day, go to work, come back late and go to bed. for me that suits me down to the ground.

I think its partly down to settling your body in a routine, I work from home so go to bed between 12 and 1.30am but I dont get up until between 8.30 and 9.30am most mornings.

Used to have a gf a few back who had to be in bed for 11pm as she had to be up at 6am to get to work on time, I used to lie there in bed wide awake until 2am  :fighting:

Diet and lack of Sun Rich. And definitely need more excercise.

Eat more fruit and fresh veg. Try not to eat too many simple carbs, especially snacking before bedtime. Dont eat chocolate, and try to avoid caffeine. Get more protein.

Take 12 fish oil per day.

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=146&prodid=581&cid=17&sid=0

^^ That fish oil.

Eat a breakfast that isnt high in fast burn carbs (in other words a crappy cereal). If you must eat cereal, make sure its decent oats. Always try and get plenty of protein for breakfast. Your body will start to burn excess carbs and fat stores. If you cant get protein, try and drink a fresh fruit smoothie. Bulk up with some natural fat free yoghurt and some milk.

Get a nice lunch thats high in protein and also got some vegetables. I eat a lovely omlette for lunch (not practical for everyone - but im lucky enough to get home for lunch). Or if you cant, then a decent meat salad with chicken or tuna.

All i eat for dinner is a decent piece of meat and a side salad or vegetable portion.

I feel fantastic every morning i get up. Even when/if i have a cold which is damn rare.

Always remember that good prep with food is the best way to stick to a good lifestyle. I try and plan my meals a week ahead.

I used to be a total gym rat as well, but just dont get the time these days. Walking the dogs, MTB and running are all the excercise i get. The Mrs likes to get me jumping about in front of the TV like a loon to some high impact aerobics as well. Also bedroom olympics are a great form of excercise!!! Get as much of that as possible.  :happy2:

One last tip. This is one i struggle with. Get away from the laptop/pc a few hours before you go to bed. The light that is given off by the screen actually makes the mind more active. Its similar to a light given off by the spectrum of the sun (IIRC), which prepares the body for excercise. It can cause restlessness in bed.

I used to suffer quite badly from it and grasp every last second in bed. Changed my diet and cut a lot of carbs out and I seem to be fine now. Training 6 times a week also which I feel much better for...breathe better and feel more awake!

Dunno if it may help your situation.
But as a consumer of many cups of tea whilst sat on my arse at work every day, I switched to decaf tea a few months back and it has made me feel a lot more energetic, which is weird.
Took me few days to get used to the lack of caffeine, but probably in terms of 'diet' it's one I'd recommend.

I now wake up feeling more refreshed, not craving that first cuppa to wake the mind/body.

the reason for this is because caffeine doesn't give you more energy, it just blocks the signals telling you you don't have enough energy. therefore it's useful for short bursts (exams, night shifts etc) but doesn't help you long term
