Title: Aircon
Post by: n13cah on April 24, 2009, 10:58:20 am
Aircon stopped blowing cold air on Wednesday.
Just had a call from dealers and the clutch in the compressor has failed.

Not bad for 8 months old!

if the name of the aircon is zexel or valeo they WILL stop functioning. Be sure the replacement is from Sanden. VW are aware of the first two makes being bad pumps

Is this something I could check by peering in the engine bay?

You made me go and look

Not easy, but i have a spare zexel, which i took a couple of pictures of. Look at how the wheel looks at the side pointing away from the pump itself, it's all black, then look at the wheel in the picture from the engine bay, there's a shiny spring on the side of the sanden pump, amazingly i succeded it focusing on the right part in my first shot.
I hope this helps you. My zexel pump went after 140.000km, no warrenty left.

Just had a look. If I looked in the right place, there's no metal spring.

VW should issue a recall and free replacement on these substandard air con units...

Apparently it's not the compressor that goes bad but the enagement switch! Unfortunately the switch is integrated into the compressor so instead of a cheap fix (replacement of the switch), you have to change the whole compressor.

where is this in the engine? Can I find it easily or do I have to start taking things apart?

Mate, it's visible when you look in the engine bay. On the driver's side of the engine, there are a load of pulley wheels.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but I have just had this very same problem  - air con stopped blowing cold air so booked into VW for their Air Con Service for £65 and crossed my fingers as I'm now out of warranty!!!

VW guy comes back after 30/40 mins and says it the compresser and its not cheap !! in fact £1022 not cheap!     I mention this is a known problem  - no it isnt he replies - I then hit him with the TSB I saw mentioned on the very thread.

He looks something up on his screen and acknowledges it is a known problem on all pre 2008 models - he then disappears for 5 mins - he then comes back with the news that he may get a VW contribution as its a known problem - great I think.

He then asks when it was last serviced  - I say a couple of months ago by an Independent Specialist  - but a FVWSH whilst under warranty - in that case he says the VW contribution offer no longer applies  !!!  WTF!  :surprised:

So does anyone know where I can resolve this and get my air con up and running without a remortgage!!!

Wolfie
not good news for you, sorry but cannot help

I am glad you resurrected this thread as I was told on Wednesday by the local dealer that I have to wait to get mine propoerly looked at until they have a new machine to take the gas out of the system (It can't be discharged into the environment) they said that on visual inspection all was ok. They also said that they cannot check the gas level or some sort of switch until the gas is taken out - 3 weeks before the machine arrives

Have to wait as they are the most local and I pass them to work and I bought the car off them and it is only 8 months old.

I will quote the TSB from this thread if it starts to go a bit sour

good luck with sorting yours out - you may look into getting a refurbed part or something

Title: Re: Aircon
Post by: Wolfie on May 22, 2009, 02:45:20 pm
you should be fine getting yours sorted as its all covered under warranty - just wish VW wouldnt put sub-standard items in what is a £20k+ car to begin with!!

there are numerous air con compressors on the bay but its a bit of a minefield really - I rang VW spares for the part number I required and they point blank refused to give it out over the phone - bar stewards!  :angry015:

anyone got a spare one knocking about by any chance    :happy2:

The parts replaced on mine were
Compressor  part number 1K0820859T
Washer         part number 4E0260749A
Washer         part number 8E0260749C

The cost of these parts + vat was £647.97.

Managed to get a copy of the invoice, but didn't have labour on it.

Yup mines buggered aswel along with the centre caps and front fan that seems to come on every15 minutes or so. All going to be sorted on Friday along with a service.

Oh and had a new engine at 4 months old, beat that.

@ gtipirelli
I was told 5 days to look at it to begin with, but ask to speak to the dealer principel. They then found time to look at it the following day. If you make enough of a fuss, I'm sure will just replace it.

Post by: Wolfie on May 22, 2009, 03:18:18 pm
Cheers n13cah for the part numbers  :happy2:

there are some on the bay for some very reasonable prices (well compared to VW anyway)  - dont know whether to risk it or not  - knowing my luck I will need loads of other dearer parts as well!

I did joke with the VW guy that if I bought a warranty from them would it be covered - he said yes but they give the car a thorough going over before the warranty and it would be spotted then  - so then it wouldnt be covered !!   :scared:

Is it not worth going to a different dealer to buy the warrenty ? I bet they're not very thorough if they're not aware of a problem ?

This week I inherited a 2 year old ED30 as my latest company car till it goes back May 2010.

With the bit of warm weather this week I have found the A/C not blowing cold.   I've got it booked in for 8am Tuesday for while-you-wait A/C service, but after reading this I can't help but wonder it may be the compressor as I can't hear it click in when pressing the ECON button on and off.  Should I be able to hear and feel it engage like in most other cars?

I'll let you know my results whatever happens...

P.S. Great forum :)

Just got back from VW, seems the compressor is at fault - parts on back order.  Very annoying.

Seems like the compressor is a crock of sh*te on all our cars then! Thanks VW!

Wish I knew about this problem 4 months ago when I still had the warranty!  Sods law that the first weekend without it and its the hottest of the year!

They must be having this problem coming up alot at the moment if they are on back order.
Mine was ordered on the Friday and was in on the Monday.

Pick my 05 GTI up on saturday. This was one of the things i checked on the test drive & so far fingers crossed it's fine. The car came with 3 months warranty but i have paid extra for another year  just in case this happens & ''yes''all air con parts are covered.

Probably a wise move on your part Gene with the regularity these compressors are biting the dust!

Had a bit of a result - contacted a local well respected VW specialist and told him of my air con compressor problem and the problems I was having with VW - after calling VW all the names under the sun - he told me he thought there was a recall on all the compressors mentioned in this thread !!   Is this true?

Anyway we spoke in depth about the problem and the upshot is he has a batch of the new VW compressors (Sanden) which he got from a local VW parts supplier which recently went out of business - he will supply the new compressor, fit it  ( about 3/4 hours work) and do a full system check and air regas for £400 all in!!  (including VAT)   :surprised:

Got it booked in asap! This isnt a back street garage but a well respected Indy with rave reviews on this and other forums!

i got mine back last week, after vw saying it will just need a re-gas & therefore not covered by warrenty, i went back the next day & made up a story that it had been to get a re-gas by indy garage & they said it didnt need it. after reading some other ppls problems i told them to check the compressor. can you guess wot happened next?? i get a call from vw saying 'your nex compressor is on order sir'.!!!!!!! thank you & goodnight!!!!

seems to be working fine now so fingers crossed.
