Title: Difference between 2.0 T engine from Mk5 and new Audi A4?
Post by: Squeeguk on January 31, 2012, 06:53:37 pm
Was just reading up on the new A4 in Whatcar mag and was quite suprised to see the fuel economy of the new 2.0T engine. Here are the specs:

Power - 208bhp
0-62mph - 6.9sec
Economy - 47.1mpg (avg)
CO2 - 140g/km

Why such a huge improvement in mpg and CO2? What could make that much difference? Anybody got any ideas?

Is that the same engine used in the mk6 GTI?

If the A4 has start/stop it would push up the mpg and lower the emissions.

The B8 A4/A5 and the facelift TT and A3 now come with the EA888 engine from the Mk6 GTI. It's an entirely new engine family. That's why it's more economical. The Mk5 uses the older EA113 engine

I thought the mk6 had the TSi?

No.

The B8 A4/A5 and the facelift TT and A3 now come with the EA888 engine from the Mk6 GTI.

Wrong, mate.

If the A4 has start/stop it would push up the mpg and lower the emissions.

Right. It also has start/stop.

Why such a huge improvement in mpg and CO2? What could make that much difference? Anybody got any ideas?

Biggest part in improvment is the Valvelift technology only found in A4/A5 B8, Q5 and TT facelift (not A3).
Valve stroke is variable due to throttle and rev. That's why this EA888 derivate delivers 350 Nm of torque
and lower fuel consumption.
Minor parts are start/stop, better aerodynamics compared to Golf, intelligent controlled generator and
reduced friction on the drivetrain (gearbox, differential, drive shafts).

Hope the Mk.VII GTI gets this engine but I'm not too optimistic as the Valvelift-TFSI is much more expensive
to build. That's why it's only used in the expensive models at the moment. ;)

they do come with the EA888 engine and thus are still not directly comparable, but i should have paid more attention to the spec sheets

thanks for the extra info  :happy2:

Ok, so not something we could just put on our older engines then? Bummer. Would have been nice to get an extra 10mpg and a little extra oopmh. Then again, I been averaging around 36 so far in the cold, but mostly motorway driving.

It might be cheaper to sell your Jetta and buy a new TT than
struggling with an engine conversion nobody has done before.
