Title: Rear caliper won't wind back
Post by: ub7rm on January 31, 2012, 07:52:02 pm
I had this really irritating squeal coming from the back passenger wheel that went as soon as I touched the brake and took the caliper off to investigate.  Greased the back of the pads and its helped.  However when I tried to wind the piston back it wouldn't budge.  I've a feeling the squeal and the sticking piston are related..

I did have the reservoir open but maybe I should have had the bleed nipple open too?  Never done this before - I take it the piston should glide back fairly easily?  Fortunately I managed to get the caliper back over the brake pads, and the brakes certainly seem to work fine on that wheel (in fact they might be sticking a little judging by the heat.

Any ideas?  How do I go about servicing the caliper / piston?

do you have a wind back tool?, the rear caliper pistons need to be rotated clockwise as you push them back

Yes, should have said got a laser wind back tool.  How much effort are you supposed to put into the thing? Was pushing pretty hard but it wasn't budging.

I was hoping to change the pads and discs myself in the near future but if I can't get the piston back in that isn't going to happen.

I've have often wrestled with the laser wind back tool and the rear pistons. I think a tip is not to clamp the face of the wind back tool too hard on to the face of the piston. Pushing in the piston tightens things up as you go so adjust the silver collar on the tool at the beginning and after you get the piston winding back to keep it a little bit loose and wiggly seems to help....or it does with me anyway.
