Title: Rattle on part throttle 2.0TFSI - Maybe resolved....

Hello good people.

I've noticed that my car has developed a strange rattle on part throttle. Sounds a bit like a paper clip shaken in a bottle, fairly quiet. If I'm doing 70 let's say in gear 5 and go 50% throttle I can hear it, but as soon as I go WOT the noise disappears.

Now, no change in the cars performance. It still goes like stink, and pulls without any flat spots on tailing off it high rpm.

Cam follower being changed as a precaution as its 43k old.

Could it be DV or the N75 boost regulator valve making the noise?

Any thoughts? (apart from driving everywhere on WOT :-))) )

How you can hear a paper clip rattling sound at 70mph is beyond me!.. i suggest WOT :laugh:

Are you running a stock exhaust/ Loose Baffle perhaps?

Stock everything engine related, bar the revo map.  Definitely coming from engine bay. :-/

Is there a heat shield on the rear engine bay bulkhead on the 2.0t?
Reason being is that i had the same kind of noise on the van, turned out to be the heatshield had detached and was resonating at certain revs / speed, drove me mental!  :laugh:

Thanks beddie will look at that tomorrow. I just hope it's not the turbo.

Might be the wastegate but really we are only speculating Rich.

Best get someone who knows what they are doing to look at it.  :wink:

Have you got anywhere with this fella. Reason is I have a similar sound coming from engine bay as well as you said just seems to be mid throttle / revs. I can only describe as a metal tinkling sound.

I have fuel pump so thought might be cam follower but inspected and replaced old one was reasonable condition. New has made no difference sound still there.

I'll prob pop down my specialist but if you fix let us know as may be same thing and I'll do same.

Not had chance to let anyone have a look at it yet. Sound like we have the same noise from your description. I also had the cam follower changed as a precaution, and didnt help the noise.

Crikey - could be anything Rich - if you have the engine cover, have you checked the mounts or taken the cover off and given it a shake (also gives the chance to look around the engine bay a bit more and wiggle stuff  :wink:), what about something in the air vents/pollen filter area? Can you hear it mid-revs in neutral with the bonnet open (near cam belt/water pump)? Only heard in gear and only 5th gear (gearbox/bearing related)?

I think its in most gears but more so the top 3. If it were gearbox/bearing/mechanical, why would rattle stop on full throttle.

Something sounds like its resonating, exhaust dowpipe ..around the cat, loose baffle perhaps

..... it might have been the map.

Since getting the REVO update I cannot reproduce the rattle.  :scared: :surprised: :confused: :chicken: :stupid: :rolleye:

I had a similar noise on part throttle when running 95 RON, I put it down to knocking  :confused:

Run it on 99 RON the rest of the time and never noticed it since...

Mine wasnt knocking because the 'rate of rattle' was constant as revs increased.

Still couldn't replicate it today... absolute mystery
