Title: ESP fault? VCDS stuff attached
Post by: Scott_GT_TDI on February 02, 2012, 05:30:45 pm
Hi guys, I hope someone can help me / put my mind at rest.

I bought my 56 plate GT TDI 170 just under a month ago and the warranty from the supplying garage is about to run out. I also purchased a 2 year 3rd party warranty but would prefer to use the supplying garage first if I need to.

I just got my VCDS lead today from Gendan and had a wee shot of it this afternoon with the following results :-

Now, I have NO ESP warning light on the dashboard but it is showing a fault on vcds

What is going on? is it a historical fault that has already been fixed but not cleared? The ESP light does not come on when I press the ESP button near the ashtray, nor does any kind of button illumination happen.

Also any other help with the other faults would be cool if you can.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Do the 'ABS' and 'ESP' symbols light up when you start the car? They should, and they go off after a few seconds. Then when you try to turn the car on, the lights come back on and go off when the car has started.

If they don't light up, it sounds like you've been sold a car with a dodgy ABS pump.

Is that the most likely thing? Surely if its faulty then some sort of light should come on on the instruments?

I'm worrying that this is going to cost a packet :(

Now i dont want to worry you but i know of car dealers who remove the cluster and use black silicon on and around the ABS or ESP or ECU light so even tho its lite up you cant see it because its full of silicon

Well when I was messing about with VCDS in the abs section and went onto the wheel speed sensor bit to check they were all working, the abs light came on whilst I was in that module so I guess that hasnt happened, the dealership I bought it from has an incredibly good reputation so I cant see that happening, fingers crossed. Should the ESP button light up when I press it?

Right when you turn the ign key on the ESP and ABS should light up, when started they should both go off, when you press the ESP button the word ESP OFF will light up on the button and the ESP light will come on on the cluster, as your ABS light comes on when you go in to the ABS that should be fine
At no point did i say the garage you got the car from has done it (if it has been done) anyone could have done it, and the mileage on the car is good, im prob wrong but ive come across this loads of times over the years

Right, the ABS light comes on and goes out, but the ESP light does not come on at all. I am struggling to find any similar issues using the search facility on here.

normally if there is a fault with the ESP the light will be on all the time, yours not coming on at all is a bit of a worry, what happens when you press the ESP button? if you try can you spin the wheels? if you can spin the wheels then your ESP isnt working as it should be, try doing this and then again after pressing the esp button

about a yr ago i somehow managed to put my ESP in to a program mode, the light was on all the time and the button didnt do anything, i finished the re programming and the light went out, now it could be the ABS is spot on and the esp is at fault, if you wanna find out take your dash out take the back off it and see if the ESP hole is full of silicon, would make sense TBH

I can deffinately spin my wheels, thats what made me concerned about a possible problem.

You have a faulty ABS pump, someone has tinkered to hide it.

Is that 100% certain Eddie? as I do not want to go in with my size 12's on to then look like an idiot lol. Any ideas on what I should say to them? If this is the case, then I am going to be incredibly annoyed

try to Clear the fault, if you can't or it comes straight back.

Go and see them, there obviously is a fault in the system

my dealer didnt want to know as i was out of warrenty , and didnt want to help as a good will thing either . i bought one off ebay that didnt turn up in time for my mot so i got a mate to order me the pump , then the ebay pump arrived lol (now back on ebay) . i fitted it myself which was easy and took about a hour .£main dealer wanted £1800 to supply and fit a new one

Ive been reading ross-tech website and theres possible causes under the fault code of just the brake pedal switch or the system needing a re-bleed. What are the possibilities of it being one of those? Or am I trying to be too optimistic? :(

I tried a re bleed and it did nothing , think you are pissing in the wind really . If you can use a spanner and bleed brakes and access to vag com it's a DIY job

Ive just phoned them as its still under warranty, guy is calling me back. I am handy with a spanner yes, but feel I should be using the warranty to do this. Its going in for its injector recall soon too then hopefully all will be well :)

do your brake lights work when you press on the pedal?
if they dont then it could be the switch

Unfortunately they do Eddie :( Wish it was an easy fix like that.

Mine had the same problem, it's a well documented fault, complain to vw uk and they should sort some discount if you go that route. I got 10% off the repair kit and fitted it myself, dealers even carry the repair kits on the shelf which tells you how common it is!

What does the repair kit involve Lee?
Title: Re: ESP fault? VCDS stuff attached
Post by: b9rgo1234 on February 04, 2012, 05:30:22 pm
The repair kit is the hydraulic part of the pump, the metal part where all the brake pipes screw into, it separates from the ABS ecu.
I think they are about £160 from TPS, but its been a while since I last ordered one.  :happy2:

Does it matter that my fault code is an electrical fault in that case? I'm presuming that its the ECU side of it that is my cars issue?

The ABS pump / Ecu consists of 2 parts with the sensor in the middle.

If and its a very big if, you knew someone handy with a soldering iron you can remove the ECU and open it up, look across the printed board and find the faulty solder joints, i work for a Volvo indy (not for much longer) and the V40's and V70s use the same ECU, we have never had to replace them as its always a break in a solder joint or 2, but if its still under warranty then id leave it to them to fix mate

Ive had the same problem on my 1.6FSI... its only done 28k  when the ESP light came on permanently.... typed something along the lines of 'mk5 golf esp light on' and honest john review showed literally hundreds of mk5 owners with the same dreaded G201 / ESP Failure/problem...

Plugged it into VAGCOM to verify it was the G201 sensor.. it was!

This is where it gets interesting...

Took it to VW - West London - spoke to one of the service advisors. Described the problem... and he acknowledged it straight away, although choosing his words very carefully as not to admit that its a common fault..

Firstly they wanted £90 to carry out their own diagnostics.. even tho i gave them a printout done by my own garage..
Now since my cars out of Warranty, they wouldnt touch it... they did however offer a 'goodwill offer' of  £600 for a repair kit.. which he said would of been only £300 had my car had a full VW service history (Which it didnt due to me being the 2nd owner and the first owner servicing elsewhere)...

On the upside...Local garage has quoted me around £200... Inc parts..

I don't believe this particular fault lies within the ecu, the repair kit has a new valve block and pump, you retain your original ecu.

The kit comes with instructions and there's a fairly decent write up here - http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/190784-how-to-repair-espabs-fault-with-vag-repair-kit/

See, here lies my confusion, every other fault I have researched by doing countless searches on here and google in general, they all state that the ESP light came on and stayed on. Barring what has already been suggested about the black silicone covering the light, my light is NOT on. Its all very strange.

Gave my car into VW West London 3days ago for a major service, told them to look into the ESP light being constantly on... paid for the diagnostics charge for this..

cars 6years old, well outside the warranty cover, modified like hell and

they gave me 100% Goodwill cover!!!!

Replaced the whole ABS/pump module, gave the car a full service, changed the brake fluid, and washed the whole car for the price of £279 - which is what they charge for a full major service.. they even took off the initial diagnostics charge...

Happy days!
