I washed my GTI last week and was shocked by how many stonechips it has attracted over the winter! Strangely enough there seem to be as many on the front half of both front wings as there are on the leading edge of the bonnet!! I thought VAG paint was supposed to be rock hard but it doesnt appear so to me - it looks as though its done close to 100K not the 48K it actually has , car is an 05 GTI in Tornado Red. Am I unlucky or does the design of the Mk5 work as a magnet for stones?

It's rock hard but not bulletproof! :P
I think I've got more stone chips than I have metallic flakes on mine.

I have a black GT on 56 plate and the bonnet looks quite spleckled, wings not much better. Could do with front end respray!

Luckily I havent had my front wings done for the rust issue yet as its hardly noticeable but it will be getting done before the 12 year warranty expires , so will have the bonnet and front bumper done at the same time.

What about filling the stone chips with oem TR touch up stick, wet sand and polish with a machine. Will save you a fortune, and also having a respray, will make your paint softer and look even worse over time.Red is easy to fix being a solid colour.
Also factor in that getting red to match after a respray could be difficult to get an exact match.
I was gonna do this but have decided to get my chips filled.

I would have to get a professional do this as I dont have the skills , but yes , it sounds like an option too. I will be pushing for new wings from VW though so my car will have to have some non OG paint on it...stupid rust!
