Title: Rear tyre wear - Is this normal???????
Post by: swgti on February 07, 2012, 04:45:56 pm: I've seen loads of threads regarding rear tyre wear due to the suspension set up, camber etc so wondered if this looks normal? The tyres have done at least 12k not sure how much more as they were on the car when I got it but looked fairly recent. Is this really something you have to live with or does messing about with the settings etc really knacker the cars handling????

I thought it was something to do with the geometry and weighting of the car making it like that. I remember our old Octavia sounding like a rear wheel bearing had gone when in fact the tyres looked like this, new rear tyres sorted it out

I have had mine proffessionally set up on a four wheel alignment rig and they found no problem.However on my last service the VW service manager stated that this can be quite a normal occurance for the MKV.Apparently it is caused by the rear shocks becoming weak, which I take it he means they are wearing out ?

There is also a mention of this in THE LATEST Car magazine review of the MKV Gti,it goes on to state that 'you'll hear a droning noise,rather like a worn wheel bearing'

Post by: Phil Miller on February 07, 2012, 08:42:15 pm: you dont need a 4 wheel alignment done, what you need is a full camber/castor and wheel alignment check and adjust, most tyre places can do this, i run 18s on my TDI and its lowered on coilovers, both my rear wheels wear on the inner edge i should get it adjusted but the car handles so well it seems a shame to change it

Post by: Boothy on February 07, 2012, 08:44:11 pm: Mine have worn like a saw tooth edge on the rear inners and my old CTR did the same. Had a four wheel alignment done on that and it never really sorted it so never bothered on the Golf. The noise is doing my nut in though!

I usually managed 20k from a set of rears and although the inner was worn more it did not cause the premature changing of the tyres, One thing I did notice was how quiet new tyres always were.
