Title: Turbo Whine - GT TDi 170
Post by: daz5182 on February 08, 2012, 09:14:03 am
Just the other day my car has decided that is going to start whining when on low gears, i suspect it is the turbo, you can hear it in the car and it not as noticeable in the higher gears.  I've not noticed a difference in performance, however should i be concerned?   Is it on it's way out?

Thanks in advance for any ideas....

Mine gives a small whine and thought maybe my turbo was getting older too, but after I had my service yesterday, the technician found I had a boost leak from the near side intercooler pipe. I bought the seal and will fit it soon.

Perhaps you are noticing it at lower speeds due to less road noise?

Does it whine/whistle when the car is in neutral and you rev the engine or is it just under load you hear it?

If not it could be mechanical gearbox/wheel bearing etc

Scott_Gt_Tdi

could you possibly give some more details about this intercooler pipe seal?...

i've had this 'whine' now since i bought the car 30,000 miles ago...still there, would be nice to get rid of the noise...
