Car needs some new boots and having read through the countless tyre thread i'm down to two, either
Michelin sport pilot 3 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Asym 2.
I have the Michelin's at the moment and although pleased with the all year round performance I find them noisy, terrible now the rears
have gone square!
Are the Goodyear's that much quieter? Is the performance loss over the Michelin obvious (240bhp GTI) or should I try something else?
Thanks in advance

i would go for toyo t1rs i have them fitted to mine and great in wet and dry
-
Hi, I have the Assy 2's on my Leon and I'm more than happy with them. Road noise is fine and they offer great grip.
Oh and they are wearing well
-
Judging from the reviews I've read the Goodyears are far better than the ps3's. I ran ps2's a good while ago and preferred the f1 assymetrics (version 1) and ps3 aren't supposed to be as performance orientated as the ps2's.
Gonna try new f1's next, like What I'm reading about how fuel efficient they are too :)

I have had PS3 before and now run Asymm 2's
I can say with a degree of confidence that in the 2k miles I've done so far with the GY they are a better tyre than the PS3.
That's not to say the PS3 are bad as they aren't. But the GY seem equally good if not better in the dry and way better in the wet. :happy2:
-
Hey Carl - you must be pleased with them as I know you rated the PS3s very highly!
I have been running the GY Assymetric 2s for about 3k and would agree that they are a great all-round (no pun intended ) tyre. Cornering, wet or dry is great but I was hoping for a little better in straight line grip when accelerating hard from slow speed - I know that there is no miracle cure when running power through a FWD but the great cornering led me to hope for a little more. Perhaps not surprising as there is little transverse tread; it all runs radially around the tyre.
Another plus for the GYs is the rim protection - best tyre for protecting my alloys so far :happy2:
I'll be interested to see how they get on when summer comes.

Thanks for the replys,
So good tyre, slightly cheaper also but how's the road noise?
-
When I almost got my car it was the goodyears that ticked most boxes for me.
-
Ive got GY F1v2 and they are superb. Ive not had the PS3 but i would be amazed if there were any better, plus the GY are a fair bit cheaper as mentioned above
-
I also would vote for the T1Rs. However i fitted Toyo T1sports and they are a fantastic tyre. Having had the Rs fitted to all my previous cars including a Focus RS I can say the Sports are in a different league grip wise from the Rs. Great in the dry and wet and suprisingly very good in the snow compared to others I have used. I would give them serious consideration as other forums rate them highly.

Road noise is good although my exhaust and ITG intake put a different perspective on road noise. The Vredestein Centos that I had before were excellent on road noise as the had a soft sidewall and complied with new regulations coming in on road noise or something....made the feel of the car soft and 'lollopy' and all but high tyre pressures.

Have a look here dude

I'm after new tyres too within the next couple of months, I have PS2's before and couldn't fault them. They were quiet too but never had the Goodyears.
-
These cratings are interesting particularly with wear rate. My tyre fitter recommended I go with the GYs as he had a lot of people coming back with the PS3s complaining about wear rate.
-
I've had gy's in the front for 1k miles now but not really had the chance to give it some beans as the weather ain't great..but road noise is acceptable

I put over 12k miles on my PS3 and they still had 4mm of tread on when I sold the car. They have a treadwear of 320 (the GY is 300). However I don't drive like I stole it and most of the miles where motorway miles so that may have been a factor.
-
Yeah, I had researched the wear rate numbers which is why I was surprised.
-
Getting 2 x GY Asym2 fully fitted from a mate for £220 tomorrow.
Looked a reviews between these and PS3 and there wasnt much in them except price £250 for the PS3 fitted and £220 for the Asym2.

ps3's > all

Tyre review in Februarys EVO magazine results after various tests (Road handling, Dry Handling, Braking distance, Aquaplaning, Wet handling, test were done using both an Audi S3 and Golf GTI (Quite apt really for us guys!), Tyres tested were 235/40/18y
1. Continental Contisportcontact 3
2. Hankook Ventus S1 Evo
3. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
4. Michelin Pilot Sport 3
5. Pirelli P Zero
6. Bridgestone S001
7. Dunlop Sport Maxx GT
8. Vredestein Ultrac Cento
9. Kumho Ecsta KU39
10. Accelera Phi
Overall the contis almost had a clean sweep, only missed out on top spot on road handling, If it were my car it would be wearing Toyo T1R's, its a shame the review did not include them as it would have been nice to see where they came as I been using them for 6 years and love em!

Changed the fronts a couple of days ago. After reading many threads on here i plumbed for ............... Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2. Only spent a few days with them but a huge improvement over previous rubber, lot less noise and more grip (may be placebo). :happy2:
-
got to agree the conti sport 3 are very nice and quiet/smooth.. not tried the mich ps3's thought would like to know peoples opinons are on them if they had the contis before
-
Been very happy with the goodyear asymmetric 1's i ran on the anni and also the conti sport 2's. So when i can get the ditchfinders off my eddie i'll be seeing which of these two are available
