Hi,
I bought a my Golf GTI mk5 today and the front wipers are not working! The back one is working fine and the spray for the front window still sprays but no matter what I do I can't get the front wipers to come on. I've tried driving while switched on as some suggest but no luck.
I've looked on the forum and some ppl suggest trying to open the bonnet and close it quite hard but thats not working either.
I do however have a problem with opening the boot. I need someone to press down on the bonnet while I pull the handle to get it open. I'm not sure if this has something to do with it as i've read that the wipers wont work if the car thinks that the bonett is open. It doesn't come up on the little computer screen on the dash though saying that its open.
I'm really stuck and a bit p***ed off as I wanted to drive it around tonight. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Craigh

the sensor on my bonnet catch went on my old 1.6 A3 a couple of years ago. the wipers wouldn't work in manual mode, but worked fine in auto (i.e. when it was raining they came on by themselves)
it may be the case that the bonnet catch needs replacing (i don't think you can replace just the sensor - can't on the 8P anyway). this fixed the problem for me, but i DID have a "bonnet open" warning on my DIS
GTIs have auto wipers as standard right? so hopefullyyyyy when it matters your wipers will work. in the mean time try and get someone to vag-com scan it
best of luck :happy2:

Defo sounds like your bonnet sensor has gone, my wipers stopped working and i also had the alarm not setting properly thinking it was open too, cheap enough to fix but still annoying if you've only just got the car and want to test it out and go for a drive

Thanks guys.
Yea the golf does come with auto wipers but they are not working either.
I'm gonna take the car to a mechanic tomorrow and see if they can sort it out for me. I will mention what you both said so that he can identify the problem quicker. Bloody annoying though!!! lol
Thanks

was it you on the phone today... race FX?
if any of the above doesn't make any sense, ignore it! lol i just had a call from a guy in a mk5 with the exact same problem!

No wasn't me on the phone...
Well my car is at the garage now so I will prob be without it another few days. I did mention to the salesman that it could be the bonnet sensor but he said it can't be as the trip computer isn't showing that the bonnet is open.
So I dunno really. I just hope the mechanic finds the problem and fast cos I want me car back. I was lucky getting home the other day as about 1 minute after I got in, it started chucking it down and I would have been stuck.
Will let you know how I get on...

Not sure if you've got high line or not but my midline dash gave not fault or light or doors open sign, I unplugged the sensor by the rhs headlight and my wipers worked and alarm behaved, just a quick way to check :happy2:

YESSS its fixed!. Apparently it was a corroded wire that was the cause of the front wipers not working.
Anyway I got me car back so can now go and have a little play in it :)
