As the title says really...
Car has had Castrol Edge for the first 2 services but then dealer swapped to Quantum.
Last visit they are now using Shell. Not that it matters really, as I won't be using the stealer this time!
After long deliberation I have decided to go with a local VAG specialist.
He told me that he uses Quantum, but if I want to supply my own oil that would be fine!
So I have read that Fuchs have a great rep for making high end oils.
I saw Oilmans offer on the forum marketplace and wondered if anyone else has opted for the Fuchs Titan Race Pro S?
Also without sounding silly.... Would it be better to keep it running on the Castrol/Quantum oils??? (same stuff, I've read...but not sure)
Here is the Oilmans link...
(do we get a forum discount on top of this price?)

EDIT: Also what DSG oil should we be using and how much of it? Just wondered if it would be better to buy this at the same time as engine oil, or let the Indy supply this?
Thanks,
Carlo.

Whatever way you choose, don't forget you also need a filter for the dsg oil change...
-
Yes mate. :happy2:
Here is the list on the quote from the Indy...
oil filter 12.40
air filter 18.26
fuel filter 26.16
pollen filter 15.30
spark plugs for 4 55.49
dsg oil 80.57
dsg filter 14.35
washer 0.75
long life Quantum oil 5lt 40.00
sump plug 1.72

Im sure the spark plugs dont need changing until 60k (unless of course, you have reached 60k)?
I would use the Castrol Edge over the Quantum stuff - you can get it cheap enough from Asda.
Is it due a brake fluid change?
-
Perhaps take this opportunity to fit an ECS magnetic sump plug (http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=6807) purposeful in helping to look after your engine and fairly inexpensive :happy2:
What Indy you use Carlo?
-
Thats quite expensive for 5Lt of quantum long life 3 - they are making a tidy sum on that!!
20L is only £67 from TPS direct...
As for DSG oil, only use VW OEM oil
TPS is the best bet for getting all the parts to be fair! You'll save a bomb

As above TPS is cheap for oil especially if you can get trade.
But the Fuchs Titan Race Pro is good stuff, used it in my old RS. Was going to put it in the golf but ended up getting the proper VW stuff for under £20 from TPS.

It's also worth bearing in mind what you'll use to top up.
I work for a large Oil manufacturer and one of our key points of advice to customers is never to mix different brands of Synthetic oils. Mixing of oils with a Mineral base stock is generally considered to be OK but most definitely not Synthetic.
I'm lead to believe that the Quantum oil is in fact a Castrol product which is branded for VW (it may have a different additive package to other Castrol products). Sometimes if you see a drum of it you'll see the makers label on the drum with the blending details and batch number.
If you look at a product data sheet for Quantum then you'll see the helpline is in Swindon, have a look who else makes oil and has offices and a technical helpline in Swindon
-
Quantum Longlife is branded BP (at least the last 10 barrels I've bought have been)
Their semi synth offerings are branded Castrol :happy2:
EDIT: But yes, BP own castrol so its all the same.
-
Ok smart arse and which group of companies does Castrol belong to??

I'll save you the trouble -

Very true Stu very true.
Branding exercise it would appear then.

Can you walk in off the street and buy things from TPS or do you need an account?
-
Some TPS's will let you walk in, others will require a trade purchase order
Worth just giving them a call :happy2:

Cheers anyone know if the one in Leeds will let you walk in an buy good without an order?

Don't take this the wrong way but I doubt any of you as consumers would be able to take any discernable or noticable differance in the oils you use. It only really comes to be noticable if you begin to analyse the oil routinely and gather performance data.
What I'm saying is don't get 'sucked in' to brand names or what others suggest is good, it's largely down to personal preferance and in many cases branding and percieved benefits (fuel economy etc).
Of course many different brands of oil have different properties which will be derived from the additive package used when blending the oil but as I said above I doubt in the context of an end user switching between service intervals you'll notice anything.
Go for one that meets the OEM specifications that is in the right price point for your needs. :happy2:
Serious questions and not picking you out for anything other than curiosity -
I would use the Castrol Edge over the Quantum stuff
Why??
But the Fuchs Titan Race Pro is good stuff,
How do you know??
-
Well said Stu. Agree with every word :happy2:
-
One other note - if you are seriously worried about oil quality forget Long Life servicing regime. :stupid:
Stick with T & D.
-
i do mine every 5,000 miles sod waitin 20,000 miles before changin oil :signLOL:
-
Me too. Longlife servicing is a really bad idea.

Has anyone got an opinion on these? Been told they're really a gimmick and that all the stuff that sticks to it would otherwise be caught in the oil filter and if any of the stuff that sticks to the sump plug comes loose the swarf/filings are magnetized and can stick to a component like the crank and stay there and cause damage

Thanks for all the info guys! :happy2:
I'm on T&D btw. I am/have been insisting on Longlife oil even on the T&D servicing since it cropped up on the forum that it was a must.
Also, if I got castrol edge on the service then I would always use the same oil for routine top ups
Regarding my local TPS, I also thought it was trade only as per their website. I'll give em a call tmrw!
Thanks for everything :notworthy:

afaik the magnet doesn't magnetise any suspended particles but just keeps them attached to itself, out of harms way. You clean these particles off at each oil change.

As the title says really...
I'm running that Oil in my Ed30, grade 5 ester based stock.
Previously branded as Silkolene but noe reverting to the parent (Fuchs) name.
Great stuff

Was just looking at the prices you have got for the DSG service parts. My car is going in for DSG serice tomorrow and the quote says parts only come to £70.04. Just thought i would mension it. Not a huge difference in cost but dont know why just Oil and a filter should vary that much in cost.
-
The dsg price could vary depending on how many litres are quoted for as the dsg box holds somthing like 8.2 litres but i dont think it gets completely drained as part of the change, maybe 6 litres might get used so at £12 a litre that could account for the difference in quotations.

Longlife oil is not essential,if on 10k intervals 5/40 with spec 502.00 can be used.
Tps are supposed to be trade only but volkswagen put a lot of pressure on them to achive their targets on oil and stuff i would be suprised if the majority dont just sell it to you.
-
True to be said, but LL3 offers better protection and is overall a better oil for engines such as this.
When I used to work at VW, it was LL3 for all servicing on Mk5 GTIs.
-
That must have been your company decision to do that though nothing from VW has ever said it,did you only have one bulk oil drum or somthing? When you did cars which had service plans and Volkswagen only pay for Platinum oil,did you still put Longlife in those?
