Title: Point & Shoot Suggestions
Post by: VeeDubDan on February 13, 2012, 07:20:56 pm
I'm in the market for a decent point and shoot camera for taking on holidays etc.  Nothing too bulky with a good optical zoom.  Had a Canon and a Lumix before,  any suggestions on what's good?

What kind of budget you looking at?

I guess any kind of digital camera by a reputable company will be good enough for what you want to use it for.

If your looking at something with a few features and a lens, Sony NEX stuff is quite good.

I have a Black Nikon S9100 that is 6 months old and i've hardly used it. I was going to put up for sale but you can have first dibs.

All specs for the camera are here

Review here:

It comes complete with original box etc and i can post some pics up if you want.

They are £160 delivered from Amazon. I would be looking for £120 delivered ONO.

The only reason i was selling is because it does't get used (i have a canon SX220 HS) and am going to get a G12

Let me know

Carl :happy2:

Budget of about £300.  Panasonic have a new DMC-TZ30 coming out soon which has a 20x optical zoom sounds impressive but I'm a sucker for big numbers!!    Don't know if it's any good though as I'm not a photography guru!

Lumix TZ 10 or the newer TZ 20 , I've the 10 and it's great. Two of my friends have borrowed it and both have bought that model and been very happy

Panasonic Lumix LX5 is a great camera. Point and shoot but with some features you find on SLR!!

If you can stretch your budget (or ebay), get the Canon G12. Mega camera!  :happy2:

I've got the G12, seems pretty good but tbh I have no idea what half of the functions are.

Others have set my pictures are ok even in full auto.

I have the G12 but may be overkill for your needs.

Robin has the Fuji 500EXR.

G12 is too big for my needs.  Want something that can fit in a small bag/coat pocket.

Look at the S95/s100. Similar function and features but absolutely tiny.

My sis has the sony hx9v which has 16x zoom

Either of these three but S100 S95 HX9V in that order of my preference  :happy2:

Have a read of this.... If you haven't got one and you were thinking about one, the need for a point and shoot could now see you get one. IMO

Keep the info coming guys  :happy2:

Like the sound of the HX9V and the Lumix too.  iPhones are cool, but don't offer a decent optical zoom.

Other options still to be looked at.

Don't know if this site is a good source of info and reliable?  Been looking in the Travel Zoom section.

Had never seen this website before, they rate my Canon 60D as 'poor image quality' which is interesting as I used it for this in Jerez last week

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1229.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee465%2Fdieseljunior%2FDPP_0070.jpg&hash=70226dc61664fe7c6942cc5afaf6382b7ac94c80)

and its a decent enough photo for me. You cant go wrong with Lumix (Panasonic), Canon and Nikon (but keep a wide berth from Samsung) have a look at dpreview.com or Fred Miranda's website and you wont be far wrong. Personallly the Lumix is very, very good with Japanese reliability and a Leica lens (Rolls Royce of lenses), have taken 1000s of photos with my FZ 8 (now 4 years old) and has been a great servant as the Pandas in Madrid zoo will testify......
