Had my service today, asked vw dealer for some engine oil I could buy- they produced quantum platinum 5W-40, I said I thought you used Castrol, they said no we use this. Has anyone heard much about this oil?
-
Think of Quantum like own brand Baked Beans or cereals, they're made in the same factory, but don't have as flashy packaging. In my experience what will now follow is a debate about whether you should by Fuchs/Castrol/Motul/Quantum. But its just the same sort of debate as 'should I buy Heinz or Smart Price'.
Platinum is the standard oil, for a longlife service you want Longlife iii which meets 504 and 507 standards and is a 5W-30.

Most people on here say Castrol Edge, so I've gone with that.
I'm a follower, not a leader :signLOL:

As said above, doesn't matter what oil it is as long as it has the right specification. Don't be fooled into paying silly price for oil. All you are getting is the name if you do!
-
longlife 3 for me and its cheap :happy2:
-
Used Quantum on my MK4 1.8T every time. Silly cheap from VW with GTI club discount. Car is still going perfect at 185k so I'll be sticking with Quantum.

Thanks for the replies folks, one last thing when I went to another VW dealer, last year sometime, which was near where I work and asked for engine oil he produced Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow LL3 5W-30, so even not all of the dealers seem to use the exact same oil.
-
So far as I am aware dealers are not mandated to use any specific brand except that it must meet the specifications so will generally go with whomever offers them the best deal at the time.
-
Stu, is that per L?

This. Use it in both our cars and have done for years. Good value from TPS as stated too.
