Title: midline to highline on a '58 tsi
Post by: MrP on February 17, 2012, 03:55:09 pm
is it possible???

i've got a '58 GT Sport 1.4tsi 170 DSG 5dr with cruise, i seem to see lots of people doing it on slightly older golfs, but some only seem to offer it on cars up to 2006/2007.

if it is possible, what do i need and what does it cost??

its it just a new LCD screen, or do i need a complete set of new clocks

sorry for the dumb questions, but i'm just starting this journey

thanks

Hi mate YES it can be done, you will need the complete cluster, yours will be a 974 cluster and will need to be coded by someone like morty or kalu

Ive got a 974 petrol cluster if your interested mate???

Morty can't do 974 or 973

Kalu is the only one

Thanks for the reply.

Does your cluster have the boost guage rather than a water temp guage?
If so, how much :)

And who is Kalu?

No just the water temp mate

Kalu is a member on here who can recode the immo on the 973 and 974 clusters

i'm guessing clusters with the boost guage and highline are rare as rocking horse doodaa

You don't have to fit one with a boost gauge

If you like the boost gauge, you can add the Polar FIS that will display boost and other live data

as its all electronic these days, could the temp guage be made to act as the boost guage?

i'm guessing thats either a raw nerve or been asked many many times then!

thanks for the advice though :)

Phil,
you got a price for your clocks?

No you didn't hit a nerve. But you can't make a boost gauge out of a temperature gauge unless you are a magician.
the cluster is a complete unit, although it is possible to take it apart. To change the function like that would require certain hardware and firmware changes.

:signLOL: This topic lost me a lot of hair - time and money.

Changed mine - clocks were like rocking horse poo......out had to change soooo much stuff as I wanted the multi function steering wheel to work as well.

I have to change....
clocks
Slips ring
and steering wheel controller module

and someone to code it all. Does depend on what you currently have and what you want. I think the expense part mainly comes from adding the multi function steering wheel.

yeah, i've got that idea from reading a couple of threads.

i need to find out exactly what i need and then decide if its worth doing.

i dont really want to lose the boost gauge, but it looks like i gave to in order to do this.

i've also taken a fancy to the mk6 steering wheel rather than the mk5

Best bet it to complete these questions, then you will get your answers

What dy you have?

- Car, make model, year etc
- Slip ring part number ? (behind the steering wheel)
- Steering wheel controller part number (again, under the steering colum)
- Obviously, clocks part number
- Oh and do you have buttons on wheel and the moment

There can be a big knock on effect and depending on what you want to do, you may have to replace ALL of these

wifes got the car this weekend so i cant answer most of that right now!

however one question, how do you take the wheel off to check the slip ring?

A VCDS code read will tell you what extra parts you will need mate  :happy2:

steering control module
Address 16: Steering wheel        Labels: 1K0-953-549-MY8.lbl
   Part No SW: 1K0 953 549 BD    HW: 1K0 953 549 BD
   Component: J0527           036 0070
   Coding: 0003022
   Shop #: WSC 00066 000 00000
   VCID: 75E5E5E76551

   Part No: XXXXXXXXXXX
   Component: E0221           002 0010

No fault code found.
and from that you can work out if you need a new slip ring mate

hmm, so find someone who  can do a code read, or shell out £200 for a code reader

Wheel easy - disconnect battery, remove airbag and remove centre bolt - unless you know someone with the above

How to remove wheel/airbag etc.

There will prob be a member near to you who would do a complete code read for you for a few beer tokens, but if you do get a code reader, get VCDS nothing else, VCDS will pay for its self many times over in the amount it saves you :happy2:
