Title: VW SatNav Update 2012
Post by: prf on February 18, 2012, 02:07:59 pm
My Ed30 was first registered in Mar 08 and had factory fitted RNS-510. The previous owner (CocoPops) upgraded the Firmware to 2660 in Oct 09 and also to V5 maps.  The unit still works fine, but would now probably benefit from an update.

I recently enquired at the local VW dealership about the cost of upgrading the maps etc and was told the 'VW Satellite Navigation System - Update 2012' disc was £198.

The simple question, to all the RNS-510 jedi, is that given the earlier updates (2660 firmware and V5 maps), will the Update 2012 disc interface correctly with the earlier 'updates' and allow a seamless overwrite/update of the car's system?  Or is my unit now too many updates behind? I presume the VW disc is intended to update both the mapping and other RNS 'operating software'...?

I ask this because having followed the many posts over the last 2 years about various updates/issues with the RNS-510, I don't want to spend £198 and then find I am in a complete mess trying to make the update work. I don't have the technical expertise to start 'downloading' fixes and burning CDs etc to do this the ad hoc way. I'm perfectly happy to spend £198 at Mr VW, just seeking some opinion as to whether I'm likely to encounter any 'difficulties'.

I live near Thruxton race circuit and am very happy to travel in the mid-South if anyone would be kind enough to assist once/if I've purchased the Update Disc.....!

The latest firmware you can use is limited by the version of the RNS that you have.

You probably have version B (tell us what the top right button on your unit is). You can use V8 maps but not the latest firmware. I'm running 2720 without issues.

Thanks for the replies to date. The top right hand button i.e. the uppermost of the 4 to the right of the screen is 'MAP'.  The right hand of the small buttons to the Right of the CD slot is a 'loudspeaker symbol + i'. Hope this makes sense.

Sounds like version B.

Further to my original post, I have now 'interrogated' the unit by pressing and holding 'Set Up'. The Version Info screen says the following:

Delivery Part Number   IT0035680C

HW Version                 H04

SW Version                 2660

SV SW Version            C_EU_9.242_t300

HW Vehicle                 OxC001

So does the 'C' at the end of the Delivery Part Number mean a 'C' version RNS-510?  And, returning to the original Post, will this current set-up seamlessly allow me to use the VW Update 2012 disc....?

Thanks to all for the assistance so far.

Hi

your 'HW Vehicle' of 0xC001 indicates a unit which is in fact an A revision or at best a B revision, your best option would be to update to version 2720 and update with version 8 maps

PM coming your way

+1 your RNS has had the firmware updated, which changes the "model number" but you still get limited support.

Josi has now released the latest supported firmware 38xx for units A, B and C. 39xx is out but doesn't support earlier models.

Thanks (again) to the last 2 posters. Unfortunately 'apples12' , I am unable to reply to your PM as I don't think I'm yet allowed to send them...!  Despite having owned lots of VWs and covered well over 100,000 miles in various GTIs, including a Mk 2 16V that I owned for 8 years, I'm not a Forum 'regular' and don't know when my ability to send PMs goes live.....!  Anyway, thanks for all the useful info and I'll keep plodding away until I feel confident enough to attempt an upgrade. That is, of course unless there's anyone in the Andover/Thruxton area willing to lend a hand to ensure I'm pressing the right buttons.
