I think I need new discs and pads allround fro my 2006 GTi, and I'm probably going to stick with OEM as I'm not going any further than Stage 1.
Does anyone know of any deals in the South for OEM discs and pads? And how much are they at the Stealers?
I'm also considering Ferodo pads as a slight upgrade, having read an old post, so any ideas on price gratefully received.
Thanks,
Ian

Anyone?

Hello bud,
I got a nasty surprise the other day when VW said I
need new pads and discs all round. Wanted to charge me the best part of £600!
Hmmm yeah right...
Euro car parts are still running their January promotion of 25% off all braking
But you have to order them online to get the discount and then you can pick them up.
£225 ish but £168 after discount. Lovely :-)
Mine are going on this afternoon :-)

Might be worth ringing your local TPS?
i needed front pads and discs for the front. Got the usual quotes from the dealers, ECP and local garage. Rang TPS and they had an offer on at the time of 40% off all OEM brake discs and pads.
When you call, ask for a quote and then ask for discount :happy2:

Cheers Rich and Rampage for that,
2 great suggestions to try. I'll get onto both of them this week. Nice one :happy2:
-
Defo a TPS store, as I was offered all new discs and pads for well under £200. I only needed the pads so they only cost me £80

Cheers, theres one round the corner from me I've just discovered. Let's hope they'll sell to me, as I think some people have reported they'll only sell to trade. :happy2:
-
Nothing but love for Eurocarparts, cheaper than trade and free delivery. :happy2:
-
+1 for Euro Car Parts as well os GSF. Bought some filters from my local ECP on Friday using the 25% discount on servicing parts and saved over £20 on what VW wanted HOWEVER even with the 25% it was cheaper to buy the oil direct from VW.
-
are you guys then fitting them yourselves or going somewhere to have them done?
-
Fitting front brake disc and pads is pretty straight forward but if you are unsure get a garage to do the job. It's just not worth it.
-
I bought the parts form eurocarparts for £190 and spent £40 on the tools. Saved a load of money. its a fairly easy job if you follow the guides.
-

Garage doing it for me. I can just about work out how to put petrol in it :signLOL:

I fit them myself, its not to hard with the guides on the forum.
even if you are not keen on doing it yourself you should buy the parts from eurocarparts or TPS. look out for the discount codes on the forums (can be up to 25%). Get an independent garage to fit the parts, it should be around 2hrs labour. it will probably cost you £300-£350 all in, for pads and discs front and rear.
Massive saving over dealer.

Been on Euro carparts webbo, and they only seem to have 288mm diameter discs or 345mm, I thought these were 312mm for boggo standard on the front?

The ECP site is notoriously tricky when trying to select parts especially discs and pads as it will list all the available mk5 golf sizes rather than those for the gti,
Correct size for the front of the gti is 312x25mm and the rear is 286mm, bear in mind that the rear disc spec has been changed at dealer level to now be 282mm but they will fit perfectly fine :happy2:
If buying from ECP then I'd personally avoid any brands other than Pagid or ATE as these are OE quality equivalents, don't rule the dealer / tps out completely as imo the oem discs are of better quality than most 3rd party stuff...
As for pads, ferodo ds performance are not a bad choice if you don't intend any track work and have the benefit of being reg 90 compliant and therefore 'road legal', ds2500 is also a good pad but getting pricey and maybe overkill for your intended use?
Mintex m1144 are also a good choice and offer the same level of performance as the ds2500 at around 60% of the price, imo I wouldn't spend big money on rear pads as it's just not worth it and oem ones will be perfectly fine, if you do want to then consider the Hawk HPS ones as they are cheap and very good :happy2:

I had my discs and pads done on both front and rear for around £460:00 last year by VW after being quoted over £600:00.

I had a hell of a job trying to figure out the correct pad sizes for the GTI when I was ordering from Euro but (I hope) managed to suss it out eventually.
Here are the pagid EuroCarParts part numbers if it helps anyone
104441508 - Front Discs
104441518 - Rear Discs
Deleted
101441178 - Rear Pads
Total came to £180 after the 25% discount.
Edit - Think I ordered front pads for the R32 instead of GTI so I have deleted the P/N. Apologies if you ordered this :ashamed:
-
I work for peugeot and have a good discount from tps so if you want me to find out how much i can get them for let me know, i live in bristol
-
Just phone tps, I can get it all for £200 inc vat
-
Thanks a lot guys, really appreciate all of that.
It never fails to amaze me what a brilliant forum this is. Everyone helping each other keep their MK5's on the road for less dollar and with maximum fun.
:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :happy2:

Hi Guys - I've been following this thread because I need new disks and pads for my Edition 30. Just phoned my local TPS and they told me where to go! Seems that they do not do any trade with the public - probably so the public ends up going to a franchised dealer and paying top whack. :fighting:
Am I missing something or have 'members of the public' on here managed to get parts from TPS?? Does it depend on the branch?
-
Be aware of Pagid OEM equivalent replacement discs + pads. These are ONLY suitable for road use imo. I had a set of these and they are no where near as capable for a bit of light track day indulgence as proper VAG OEM discs in my view. Threw the Pagids in the bin after 2 months of use.

It depends on the TPS branch. Some will sell to the public and others won't.

Yes it does. Years ago my local TPS would sell to the public. It is run by the same franchise that runs the local VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda dealers (got it all sown up) and even the parts guys at VW would tell you to go there if they didn't have stock. But TPS used to sell to the public at pretty much retail prices. Then they tightened up and its trade only. As suggested above, if you go in with a part number they might not question you too much and accept card / cash payment but it does vary.

I don't do track days but interesting info none the less.

I think a sticky should be made with a list of branches that do sell to the public... :happy2:

It may just be me but those oem equivalent pads and disks from ecp are pants. Nothing but brake fade and sparks from disintegrating pads.
People say oem use pagid but my new oems are made by ferodo or ever u spell it.
I would warn anyone from using pagid cheapo pads.

OEM suppliers will vary depending on who's put the best bid in at the time. Same reason some GTI's rolled off the line with Michelin tyres, some with continental etc. OEM suppliers are pagid / ATE / Ferrodo and probably others. Worried you say that as I've just taken delivery of my new pagid discs and pads and they generally review well..
-
just get ones via dealer/TPS - the parts with have the official VAG Part number stamped on them.
I couldn't find these at all on the Pagid discs i got - hence i was annoyed but then i did use an inde garage to source and fit them when maybe i should have sourced them myself from TPS.
Lesson learnt and i won't be using those again I can tell you.

hey luke, i need a set of rear disc's / pads ..... i've really no idea which ones to get, could you help me source some from TPS? i live in Clifton....
-
My discs and pads have been deemed as fine by my garage at this weeks service, so no need to change for me, but I think a list of TPS sites that will sell to Joe Public is a brilliant idea.
I'm happy to start a list if people want it.

How much were your pads? I I'm wondering if there are different quality of pagids. Front pads kept rubbing against disks so when I stopped I had burning smell. Again rears didn't have this issue but driving fairly hard and braking for short bursts caused rears to get so hot that sparks come from rear.
I then changed just front pads to a slightly more expensive mintex and the rubbing stopped and braking improved although rears are still rubbish and have taken my confidence out of my braking system when having a spirited drive.
Hence now changing front discs and pads and rear pads all oem.
Pads all round was £95
front disks £80

I suspect that the pads the likes of Pagid supply to VW as OEM are to VW's specification which might be slightly different to the specification that pagid sell to joe public under their own name - I don't know this for a fact but its common practise with many other goods. Wouldn't have thought it would be that different though as they're supposed to be a quality supplier.
If that was my experience I would complain to Pagid - that doesn't sound right. 100% sure they were the correct fitment? I think its normal enough that there is some contact / burning smell until they bed in but after a couple of months I guess they should have been well bedded in!
Cost broke down like so
2 Pagid Brake Disc (Front) 93.48
2 Pagid Brake Disc (Rear) 68.40
1 Pagid Brake Pads (Front) 46.74
1 Pagid Brake Pads (Rear) 31.14
Then there was a 25% discount applied.
-
I just got full set of Pagid brakes, front and rear discs and pads from ECP with 25% discount. Fitting tomorrow :pomppomp:
-
Yes this smell lasted for few months. I should have complained. Definitely correct fitment. However im sure mine were cheaper than above.
-
Got a quote from Leeds VW dealer yesterday - front and rear discs and pads for £317. I know somebody who will fit for about £60 which makes it about £380 all in. The dealer quoted £670 fitted!!!! Out of interest I called my local VW independent specialist and they quoted £400 fitted using VAG OEM parts...... Unless there is any major saving using TPS to supply parts it looks like it is going to be approx 400 notes to replace everything.
Can anybody post details of any TPS outlets that sell to the public????

Yeah i can get some, i could phone them and tell them you are going to collect if you like?
-
ok, ive booked in with a Garage for this Wednesday, a local VW specialist called PC Motors in Bristol....
replacing rear disc's and pads
£35 labour
£35 per disc
£35 set of pads
all OEM parts...
Total £140 + vat on top....
Happy enough with that, thoughts anyone?

Front discs+pad £250

ummm, just checked that, rear break pads and discs replacement appear to be £239 .... not £140 :)

I had my service at the stealers (Trust VW Wolverhampton) last week and they said in the report and recommendations printout - Front pads 50-60% worn, discs lipped £319.70!! Rear discs lipped £257.71!! Which to me does not match up with the VW sites prices. So best part of £600 and does not include rear pads!

Firstly, that is extremely disappointing, secondly, you can now show them the web prices.
And thirdly, I've have some limited success in getting them to price match local garages.
