Title: Reducing Wheel Hop - The definitive answer?
Post by: George on February 24, 2012, 07:32:48 pm
Hi all,

Since owning my Edition 30 I've noticed that wheel hop is something that is very apparant even with standard power. I've read countless threads on here, PM'd certain members and even spoke to Jonnyc at the Autosport show this year but I'm still no closer to getting the definitive answer.

At the moment my car is running standard power but I'm planning to have it Revo Stage 1 mapped within the next few months which I know will only enhance the problem. The car is a daily driver and I plan to drag race it this year.

I just wanted to know what different members on here had done to reduce wheel hop and what order they would rate the effectivness? There is plenty of information on here regarding different methods such as:

Dogbone inserts
WALK
Coilovers
Upgraded dogbone mount (THS/VWR/Vibratechnics)
Upgraded side engine mounts

Hopefully we can get a definitive answer on how to solve GTi / Edition 30 wheel hop.

Thanks  :happy2:

WALK & a full set of VF Engineering mounts has totally stopped wheel hop for me. They were fitted together so I can't comment on which was more effective but this combination works  :happy2:

WALK, power flex torque arm mount insert and XDS setting 2 has reduced wheel hop almost completely unless the tyres are very cold

Lower and top two engine mounts are are an astounding modification if you don't mind the extra NVH. The hop is eliminated and wheel spin is reduced to.
Next to a remap this is the most noticeable/best mod I have ever done to a MK5..........  :happy2:

Won't stickier tyres potentially make matters worse if the other fixes haven't been applied?

Will the WALK kit reduce it by a far amount?

You would think so. But after putting Toyo R1R,s on a stg2+ Cupra and the wheel hop all but dissapeared.

The chassis was completely standard and the hop was quite bad with the Potenza,s.

Fitting the R1R,s made the car feel like it had £1K worth of suspension mods. , . . . . Just got a new set for the spring

the bridgestones really don't work when they're cold i have found so you probably will notice a difference with different rubber. in the summer the bridgestones were excellent though

Dunno, but what i do Know is that i can still get some wheelspin/touch of hop now; and i have done all of the above fixes...except semi slicks so will report back once the R1R's go on

If you are fitting WALK alone at this stage, it would be helpful to know how you find the difference. Many of us fitted WALK at the same time as other suspension mods.

Imho no chance without full engine mounts to solve wheel hop. The WALK will complement the engine mounts.
LSD and stickier tyrers will further improve traction. No spinning, no wheel hop.
Toyo R1-R and Yokohama AD08 are pretty sticky when warm up.

That's right - It's how the whole package adds up together and how progressively you use your right foot is also a component.
