Title: Some advice please guys
Post by: jimlad09 on February 26, 2012, 04:20:54 pm
I have decided after the recent spell of bad weather and constant cleaning of my car that i need to increase the amount of cleaning i undertake.

I want to purchase a clay bar kit and a high quality wax to be applied less regularly than my autoglym aqua-wax, a heavier duty wax.

I have looked at a number of products but would just like some advice over which to buy,

so far its either the meguiars quik clay kit or the autoglym surface detailing kit

as for wax i would like some suggestions. Mid range that delivers a good finish, im not too anal but would like a quality result

many thanks, James

90% of the finish is in the preparation of the paintwork before LSP.

The Megs clay is fine but you'll quickly go through the lube. I can use half a bottle on the car. Alternative is Bilt Hamber, for which you can use water as lubrication.

Wax depends on your cost but doesn't last very long. Alternatively go for a sealant such as FK1000P, Powerlock, Jetseal or alternative eg 476s.

Thanks for the help!

So Bilt Hamber clay bar and a decent sealant (as you list) will help improve my current finish, and i presume that any additional wax is added on top of a sealant?

Its only really the rear of the car that has a lot of contamination and slight greying from prolonged exposure to salt etc is starting to appear

If you want a wax that you can apply and forget about try Collinite 845. It is exceptionally hard wearing but wont give the paintwork the 'bling' effect of less hard wearing waxes so it is a compromise as to how often you are prepared to put the work in.

Thanks, I think im going to aim for mid range in terms of price and performance. Like it said its more about the care of the paint work than aesthetics...but it does feel good when its got a flawless shine...decisions.

Appreciate the feedback guys

I've tried a few waxes and settle for dodo juice hard candy (as I have a light, medium and dark car) and I'd say it does give a decent shine, but I do use AG EGP prior to it and depending on weather etc it can last a few months.

Another thumbs up for the Collinite here; I apply it once every 2-3 months as a top up and it does the trick. Makes cleaning a lot easier too!

:surprised:

You are either not using it correctly, using too harsh an TFR or simply just wasting that!!

+1. Two layers of collinite (476s) lasted me four months. Very durable. You do not need to keep topping it up!

After: Yes, but if you can allow the EGP a bit of time to bed in before putting the wax on it. Last time i used EGP then waxed i gave it just short of 24 hours before applying the wax. Not saying you have to do this but i got good results from it.

Haha! Just re-read my post, I meant to say months not weeks! I definitely don't want to be topping it up every other week!

Thought that seemed a bit OCD...didnt want to say anything  :scared:

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys, I decided to go for a couple of Poorboys products with the Bilt Hamber clay. Also treated myself to some Dodo Juice towels and wax applicator

I think if you could get to grips with Supernatural Hybrid with an occasional Red Mist top up it would last quite some time.

Yeah? il have a play with the new gear when it arrives and see if im left wanting more. Supernatural hybrid is that a wax? and the Red Mist is a detailer? Think the red mist might make its way into the shed

Red Mist is more of a spray sealant. SN hybrid is as it says - a hybrid between sealant and wax.

Mine with SN Hybrid and then a Red Mist pass is very good. I can then get away with a wash and Red Mist.

Cleaned your car since JKM Stealth.

Managed to clean it on Sunday. Simple snowfoam and 2BM was enough. The FK1000P held up well. Still beading and sheeting well. Once I get the Vreds off and the PS2s back on, I'll sort the tar spots on the rims too.

Also spent a couple of hours on Saturday sorting out the front upper grille. Just gotta sort out the lower grille and the fog grilles.

a far better alternative to red mist is chemical guys hybrid h7. its just awesome stuff.

spray it onto a microfibre, 1 or 2 sprays per panel, spread around the panel, buff with another microfibre.

i use it after every wash, trust me on this one, ive tried about a dozen or so.
