Hi Guys,
Today is the first day in the office that we've had for what seems like an age, so we've found a little bit of time to get another write up done!
This one was a real dream come true for us, particularly for Jim, whose dream car since childhood has been a Ferrari F40
When we arrived, it was clear to see that the car was well loved and well maintained, but with that came years of swirl marks and defects that had never previously been corrected.
This is the view that we were greeted with when we pulled round the corner...

To start with, it was the usual process - the wheels were cleaned first using Bilberry Wheel Cleaner, diluted 5:1 and applied using a 5 litre pressure sprayer, agitated using EZ Detail Brushes, Swissvax Wheel Brushes and then washed off with the pressure washer

The front was splattered with flies and bugs... we figured that a car like this just doesn’t go slow, and therefore just couldn’t help but pick up so many hitchhikers  These were sprayed with Bug Squash, which was left to dwell for a couple of minutes before being pressure washed off
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu242%2Fautoperfection%2F5.jpg&hash=9f979f15d5edea0513df6f5de7810665e5634782)
Next we covered the car in snow foam, using Valet Pro pH Neutral Snowfoam...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu242%2Fautoperfection%2F6.jpg&hash=8ea2e6eaa4ef4cf34765eb7b4dd94ce23522180f)
And then followed with the hand wash working down from the top to the bottom using our Sheep Puppet and Lusso Auto Bathe...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu242%2Fautoperfection%2F7.jpg&hash=67303e27a053bd47b31c83a58d139b80376b47cb)
Dried the car using an Autoperfection Super Plush Drying Towel...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu242%2Fautoperfection%2F8.jpg&hash=c29b987f32ad8a6db5d61ac4d2948d25debfe93b)
There were a few small tar spots, particularly around the rear end, which were removed using a mild grey clay and Valet Pro Citrus Bling as the lube (not Last Touch Neat, as it says on the bottle  )
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fuu242%2Fautoperfection%2F9.jpg&hash=3c205fbdfd75bc8cb969eb8d88629665d9b3800f)
After the whole car had been washed and clayed, it was easy to see that Jim had his work cut out with the machining stage! The sun was kind enough to allow me to get lots of pictures of what needed fixing...

Having spent quite some time talking things through with the owner, we set out with the intention of achieving 80% correction due to the level of damage and the amount of time we had to work on the car. The correction stage was tough for Jim due to the level of defects present... Machining had to go at a steady pace because of the carbon fibre body panels. We used 3M Extra Fine with a Yellow Pad, and then refined with 3M Ultrafina and a Blue Pad. In actual fact, after the two stages were complete, we managed to achieve closer to 90% with some deeper random scratches remaining (although these were reduced with the final finishing stages).

All of the plastic parts of the engine and front bit (I’m sure there’s a technical name for this part, but I don’t know what it is :ashamed:) were cleaned and treated with Valet Pro Protectant, to remove grime, restore colour and offer protection against future build-up

The exhaust pipes and tips were all cleaned with Raceglaze Alutech, which leaves behind a protective film to help keep them clean and shiny for longer

For the final stages, we cleansed the paint with Lusso Revitalising Creme before applying two coats of Swissvax Best of Show and the wheels were cleansed also with the Lusso RC and then protected with Swissvax Autobahn.

It was such hard work, but so rewarding and satisfying! We started working on the car at 09:30 and finished at just gone 19:30, with two of us working solidly the car was treated to just over 20 hours of work-time, and this is what we left behind...

i do indeed

Great write up of a great detail on a amazing car. :happy2:
I would have had to insist on a drive as part of the deal.
-
He started it up at the end of the Detail as we insisted on hearing it running, but we weren't quite brave enough to ask for a drive!!
He had an old classic Jag that I absolutely fell in love and he did let me sit in it, but I couldn't reach the pedals so I couldn't have driven that one either!!! (Taryn)
-
Great work chaps, what a car!!
-
Simply amazing!
-
stunning finish and a stunning car, heard one this week in oxford, glorious
-
WOW! that's a lovely car.
Fantastic work there - must have been a pleasure to work on something with so much detail like that. Looks so much better after the correction. Hope he maintains it well now
-
100% my fave car ever! I will have one some day!
-
Looking very good   - the detailing and the car :happy2:
-
So, so frikkin gorgeous!

Very nice!
Quick question....can you confirm the recommended practice with regard to using pressure washers near car tyres? I have read that directly spraying it on the tyre wall is potentially very dangerous..so I'd like to know your view considering one of your photos above shows you using the washer near the tyres.
Thank youuuuuuuuu

As long as you keep the lance moving and don't hold it in the same spot for any length of time, and providing you don't get too close, using the pressure washer on the tyre wall is fine. If you have an industrial pressure washer it's a bit different, because the water is pushed out at a much, much higher pressure and it then becomes a bit more dangerous to direct it on to the tyre wall :happy2:
-
Much obliged for the response :happy2:
-
F40  a real supercar
Amazing car and amazing detail. Top work! :happy2:
-
....
Can you recommend something sweet and simple (I never spend much more than a couple of hours cleaning my car exterior) to get rid of bugs etc, please. Looking for something I can keep in the boot and just point, spray, and wipe. Or apply with a cloth and polish off.
I currently use a white creamy stuff but it's got to be kept away from the black plastics because it leaves white marks for months.
A client of mine had a F40 (and a Daytona, and a Brabus Merc as his town car) - Fabulous car.

There's a few options really... if you don't want to spend any money a terry towel soaked in hot water and placed over the bugged area lifts them off the paintwork.
If you wanted to go for a product with more oomph you could use a clay bar and lube to get rid of them and then use a spray sealant to help stop them sticking in the future.
Or you could try a pre-wash solution to loosen them off, such as Valet Pro Orange Pre-wash, or a Citrus Degreaser, then rinse them off, before carrying on with your normal wash routine.
The best bet is to get rid of them as quickly as possible to eliminate the possibility of the bug-juice etching into the paintwork, then apply a sealant to help stop them sticking and make future washing easier.
:happy2:
-
WOW...after hearing all about it I was looking forward to the write up, that looks so much better after all your hardwork... :drinking:
-
^^^^
@ the autothingy cleaning peeps:
I gave you a Thank You [It works again!]
-
I  the F40...really, truly, deeply, madly...love it!!
-
what a car! great job guys, looks like you had your work cut out, but it came out stunning!
you did well to do all that in 20 hours!!
-
Thanks JPC - to say that our backs and arms (and infact, every other joint in our body's) ached afterwards, is a bit of an understatement! It was bloody hard work, but I don't think our smiles dropped once the whole time we were there!
-
i bet! all that in 20 hours is nothing short of a miracle! ;) well done!
i can remember parking next to an F40 in casino square in monaco when i was about 8.
we were in a CLK AMG convertable, and made it look like a lada!
ever since then i was hooked. still prefer one of those to an enzo
-
I'm more of a fan of the 360 (Taryn), but Jim's dream car since childhood has been the F40!
Still think I'd go for an Aston Martin though if I could have any car
-
Beautiful work !
That paint looks stunning. What an awesome red
-
you know i would have licked that car clean for you? :chicken: rolling art
excellent work you two :happy2:
-
you know i would have licked that car clean for you? :chicken:
Somehow I can't see the owner being as happy as he was if we'd turned up and let you loose licking it clean!! We'll keep it in mind for the next one though!!
-
....Did someone mention licking cars?
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FHotties%2FLickyBabe.jpg&hash=cad48bd0bc2bf858f340a76e50b53d94b028c674)

looks awesome
-
SEE i'm NOT mental!!! :chicken:
 Cheers RR
-
Just because there's a picture of a lady licking a car, it doesn't automatically make you sane... in fact, I'd say it just brings in to question her sanity!! :chicken:
-
i'd like to give her sanity a damn good seeing too
-
 You're such a typical man... I think I preferred it when you spoke about Cheese all the time!!!
-
first i'm insane now i'm not normal and you would prefer me obsessed
and you accuse ME of displaying gender stereotypical behaviour :P
-
 You're such a typical man
....Would you prefer it if we were more typically like women?
-
(This is Taryn, not Jim) Yes, I would
-
(This is Taryn, not Jim) Yes, I would
....Yes, I realised from your reply (#34) that you were Taryn.
In reality I somehow doubt very much that you would prefer that men's characters were more like women's. Just the same as men wouldn't want women to be more like men. I have to generalise of course.
Anyway, you females are from a different planet!
-
Anyway, you females are from a different planet!
I'll take that as a compliment :innocent:
-
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway back on topic :chicken:
did you take any shots of the lush interior? or by chance take a snippet of video when she fired up?
-

I'll take that as a compliment :innocent:
....Yes, it was meant as a compliment and actually perfectly illustrates the gender differences and how good it is that we are different but nevertheless complementary.
:happy2:
-
did you take any shots of the lush interior? or by chance take a snippet of video when she fired up?
Urm :ashamed: No, we didn't... we did the interior right at the end and by that time we had put the camera away so we could get finished and get packed up (we would have stayed there for a week, but the owner had a date with "the game", so staying later than 19:00 wasn't an option!). I did take a picture of the exhaust while it was running, but it doesn't look any different from when it wasn't running!
Hopefully we'll be going back at some point, so when we do I'll make sure I take the video camera with me!
