Just had a piper exhaust sports cat on a mk5 gti ed30 centre box and tail pipe (no back box) fitted last week . Exhaust light on dash came on (amber) no flashing, not red just on. There is no lack of power and turbo kicks in fine, fuel consumption is the same. Had the light turned off by VW and the tech says there is no problem with the sensors and all he can put it down to is that it's a non standard exhaust. Drove for 3 days on the light is on again. Any suggestions on this as i have done some research online and seems to be a few who have had this issue.
Car is due mot in 2 weeks time and need to get fixed before then
-
you need a remap to knock the light off
-
So as it stands will it pass an mot or do i need the remap for it to pass? I have also read about an oxygen simulator but can not find 1 online. Any thoughts on this? We also had a full milltek system on another ed30 and had no problem with light coming on.
When the guy at the workshop was removing the engine cover it was very tight and when he did remove it we noticed that 1 of the rubber grommets was damaged so now it has only 3 holding the cover on. I did read on another forum that the engine cover also works as an airbox but now its loose so i am not sure if this is sucking in air from the missing rubber grommet :sad1:

iirc the new mot rules stipulate that all warning lights at startup in the dash must extinguish themselves to pass.

A missing grommet will not cause sucking of air into the engine cover.

ok great thanks for quick reply, i have it booked in tomorrow and will post back if any result, might be usefull if someone else has a similar problem

You will find it is the sports cat raising the cel. I would get it tested for emissions to check the cat is working okay and its working correctly. I fear you will need to spend some money on a stage 2 map to get rid of the problem totally. Or you could contact a local car tuner who may be able to map it out on the standard map for you.
-
If you don't get it mapped out you could try a O2 spacer, the one with the right angle bend seems to work well. Failing that get a code reader/eraser and delete the code just before the MOT and hope it doesn't come back when it's tested.

The light comes on after about 3 days when turned off and it's the 2nd time we turned it off. Now it's on and the car still runs fine.
I have read about an o2/oxygen simulator but can not find 1 locally or for that matter online. I have seen them on ebay US but i am trying to get this done asap as mot is due in 2 weeks

With regards to a remap when you say standard would this not just erase when the car goes back to the dealer once they connect the computer up to it?
Don't mind spending the money but fear this may happen?

It seems to have had some success with Suburus having the same issue but it didn't work for me - the only way I could get rid of the rear O2 sensor triggering a CEL was getting it mapped out on a remap

I didn't think Shark could map yours out?
There are lots on EBay, the yanks have had success with them but I've never tried them.
My light comes on after about 3 days too when it's on stock map with decat.

I think Shark has sorted it out now but we didn't get it sorted out when I was helping Ben devevop the Stage 2+ Shark map and then I eventually went with Revo for the KO4 conversion - Revo map this out from Stage 2 on as standard.

ok guys sorry for the late replies but took the car in today and had the vw tech take look at it. The light was still on so he suggested the best thing to do is to replace the nox sensor(done today) and also advised me to get the car remapped so this problem should not come up in the future. The exhaust light is now off and he also did an emissions test which passed. The car is booked in for an mot tomorrow so will update on that when done.
Now with regards to the remap, i have been doing some reading online and there are so many companies doing this, how do i know which best for the ed30?
Any help appreciated with regards to turbo overheating, uprated fuel pump and increase in bhp range, 300hp/350 etc
-
Most people on here with an ed30 say that stage 2 is enough and have run into problems when going stage 2+. However some have gone to the + stage and run fine. Most tuners offer good packages and I would suggest go to somewhere that is local to you in case you have any problems that need fixing.
The hpfp is always good to do even on standard cars. I am stage 2+ on a k03 and love the extra torque and power. If you arent chasing figures id stick with the oe engine cover as I found mine is much smoother to drive than when I had an intake fitted.
-
Good advice with regards to going local if any problems might occur, i am in East Yorkshire, North Humberside if anyone can recommend a company nearby that would be great. Also is the nox sensor an issue regarding exhaust system changes as mine was changed yesterday. I had a complete miltek system on another ed30 and had no issues with emmisions light or sensors for that matter. The only difference was that there was no middle box on the miltek and on the piper i have now there is no back box but does have a middle box (if that makes sense)
-
Strangely enough I fitted a Milltek dp with 200 cell sport cat which didn't cause a CEL, however after I had the stage 2 software it did!!
The map has since been tweaked and rather than the rear O2 sensor being completely flashed out, Mikko @ Shark as altered things just relating to the fault, which IMO is a far better approach.
-
ok guys good news passed the mot today and emmisions spot on :happy2:
had to get it remapped today aswell and the difference in torque mid range is more than enough with the sports cat. I have an ABT quad back exhaust that i got of ebay for £25, yes could not believe it myself as they sell for around £800 now from ABT uk. The nice lady said she has no use for it anymore so got a bargain i would say. I am going to get that on and post some pics on when done.
-
Ok So Now exhaust light off, remapped with loads of mid range torque but fuel consumption very high-normal driving no booting, from my search regarding remaps i figured i'd get better mpg. Any suggestions on where to start?
-
So with the remap the fuel consumption is very poor and i thought remaps would better fuel economy. i spoke to the guy who did the remap and he says the car will run rich to accomadate for the power demands. My problem is that i do normal driving without going at it hard and still uses alot of fuel. The guy said that he had to decat the car to turn the exhaust light off  which make think i could have forked out less and got a decat in the 1st place and not pay alot for a sports cat.
Now my question is that can this car be remapped without decatting it and keep the exhaust light on or am i wasting my time. Guys i really need to sort this problem out so if you can make good suggestions the pls fire away

Never had a cel when using revo stage 2 /2+ with a milltek tbe. Sounds like the problem is your tuner's mapping.
-
I have a piper sports cat with mid box and no rear, Not sure what to tell the tuner as to how he should adjust the map so i get it remapped without a decat and still keep the light off. With regards to it over fueling is this normal? When i had my cambelt changed at Vagco, Simon felt that the car was running too rich and after revving it a few times the exhaust pops really loud, this he said was unburnt up fuel in the exhaust, hence over fueling

Who is your tuner as it sounds like your map isn't optimised for the car.
-
he is a local guy in Hull and he downloads all the info from the car and sends it to a vw tech who does the remap and then sends the file back to him the downloaded back to the car. I tried telling him the remap needs looking at and he says it's running rich due to the remap and that's why the car is at 300bhp cause of a performance tune. Simon thinks that the car is not operating efficiently, i agree
-
A few questions:
Was the car dyno tested to get a true AFR?
Was the car datalogged before or after the mapping?
If its running rich, do you have any actual evidence of this or is it just your tuners guess?
-
No Dyno
No datalogue
The tuner guess it's running rich due to higher demands due to the remap
What would a rolling road tell me about this problem?
-
with no datalogging and no dyno testing your map is just a guess by someone on the end of an email. What you need to now do is take it to a specialist with datalogging equipment and ideally a dyno and check various parameters such as AFR's Boost, ignition pull, engine load, throttle angle, fuel pressure demands etc....
The dyno is usefull as you will be able to test the car in every gear under varying load conditions / throttle positions and get accurate repeatable results without the danger of doing this on the public highway.
Ideally your tuner should have done all of the above, at the very least the datalogging as part of the service. But I guess you didn't pay specialist money for the work?
There are some very friendly and helpfull people on here that can do the basics for you with Vagcom, check the vagcom section for someone local that can help you :happy2:
-
that sounds indepth and possiblily what should have been done initially, now i will have to get it done as you say and this should sort the problem. looks like i am done talking to the guy who remapped it as he just makes excuses now. Cheers for the detailed info
-
Get the clown that mapped it to flash it back to stock. I ran stock with a turbo back Milltek without a light.
Even if you get the exhaust light on that's got to be better than washing everything in petrol.
-
Looks like the only option now then start from the begining with a genuine remap, just thought he was closer to home and would be better if anything went wrong but i guess u learn :sad1:

Your best bet would be to use one of the recommended tuners on this forum, ie:
-PDT
-R-Tech
-JKM
To name a few. . .
-
Ok so i just had a chat to David from PDT (very helpfull) and looks like i am going to get the car in to them and get i done right this time, no messing about now. So hopefully i will post back with some positive results soon

Top company with top guys :happy2:
