Title: FSIII Brake Kit Upgrade
Post by: S-Combi on February 28, 2012, 09:25:11 am
Hi, i am looking to upgrade my Octavia FSIII front brake kit to Gti MK5 Caliper carrier.
Anyone can please help with what other parts i need? My findings is the need of Wheel Bearing Housing 1KO 407 255/256 AA and 55mm strut/absorber.

Hi  it all depends on what enginge you are carrying in your car for example if your running a 1.9tdi or a 1.4 - 1.6 then you will need to change the struts to 55mm struts and you will need to change the hubs because the diamater of the hub will not take the 55mm struts also with if you have any of the engines mentioned above the caliper carrier and the hub will be one piece so to cater for the gti brakes you would need to change the hubs that take a two piece setup meaning that the carrier will unbolt from the caliper. If you have a 2.0tdi all you will need is brake kit as the 55mm struts and hub are already there all you need to do bolt it all up with your new 312mm disc and new pads bleed it through and off you go. As for the 2.0 FSI i think they are the same as the 2.0 tdi but i can find out def for you. what engine do you have? i'm guessing its an FSI because of your thread title but what engine?

Hope this helps

Rich. :happy2:

Rich, if he has the FSIII calipers he will definitely have the 50 mm struts as well.
FSIII caliper only fit to small spindles with integrated caliper carriers.

S-Combi, you will need both spindles and 55 mm struts. We had this topic some
weeks ago. Try a search.

Hi

As Bruce said you would need both spindles and 55mm struts (Thanks Bruce for the help :happy2:). Also does your 1.4 tsi have colour coded calipers and carriers because if it don't it will look a little odd with red calipers on the front and not on the back so with that one you could either change the rear brakes as well or paint the rear ones or as an alternative I'm pretty sure that the 2.0 TDI 170 bhp also runs 312mm brakes on the front and they are not colour coded and they also come with the 55m struts and two piece carrier and caliper so it might be worth finding someone that is breaking a golf 2.0 tdi 170 and asking them for both complete struts with hubs and brakes. If i can get on ebay i'll have a look for you and if i find anything i'll post the item numbers on here for you. Hope this helps

Rich.

I have a 1.4Tsi Dsg ....

Are you sure you have the FSIII caliper?
Is FSIII written on the caliper?

:surprised: Hm.... are they trying to cut costs?
I have a similar engine with manual gearbox (so lighter) and the 288mm brake discs and the corresponding carriers as stock.

A friend of mine had the FSIII calipers (1.9 TDI engine) and I sold him my previous GTI kit.
He had to change the calipers, discs, pads, hubs, and the suspension (he had a aftermarket suspension and it was easier to go from 50mm to 55mm).
Not sure the ESP needs recalibrating (if it's possible) to take into account the bigger stopping power.

Yo Rex, cost cutting i assumed :fighting:
Checking out cost of Hub. Got a set of Gti suspension with 55mm struts  :happy2:
Not sure about recalibrating bigger stopping power

I upgraded the brakes on my jetta 2.0 tdi from 288mm to 312 and done the rear brakes as well and the esp was fine didn't have any problems with it needed the gti brakes for more stopping power as i thought that the 288mm brakes weren't all that much good at actually stopping the car anyway  :signLOL: Hope this helps.
Let us know how you get on with the conversion.
