Title: Gtechniq Glass Sealant Kit
Post by: rich83 on February 28, 2012, 12:53:04 pm
Why
I bought this as an alternative to RainX. RainX is great but doesnt last very long, Gtechniq G1 is reported to last up to 20-30K miles

Sourcing
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/engine-and-exterior/gtechniq-glass-sealant-kit/prod_911.html

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cleanyourcar.co.uk%2Fphp%2Fimage.php%2Fimage.jpg%3Fwidth%3D360%26amp%3Bimage%3D%2Fimages%2Fuploads%2Fwatermarked%2Fgtechniq_glass_kit.jpg&hash=873bcb465e8b25db5eab3c52905b8f6c77beac9b)

Or google it, its sold at a load of places including ebay I imagine.

Fitting
Use the Gtechniq G4 nano polish as you would any other car polish, the remove it. Now follow the steps in the video.

(Yes, i know... he does sound a bit dull doesnt he?)

My kit didnt come with anything to apply it with so I used some of those cotton wool cleansing pads. (if you have a girlfriend/wife/mistress, you'll have some lying around)

Other versions
RainX
Car-Lack
... probably quite a few more.

Plus Points
Very easy to use the polish and the G1 product.
Works very well when moving at about 40mph or faster.
Windscreen wipers seem to become much more effective, one wipe and any water on the screen disappears instantly. (will get another video when it rains next)

Heres a little clip from yesterday, it was raining quite heavily and I was traveling at 70MPH (your honour). As you can see, there is no need to use the windscreen wipers at all.

[ Invalid YouTube link ]
Sorry for the poor quality video.

Minus Points
The Gtechniq G1 is quite hard to remove even with the G2 residue remover, especially once you've built up 3 coats on the windscreen.
Not so good at low speeds, but much less wiper action is required.
Requires a little more application of washer fluid when cleaning the windscreen due to the repellence of the product.
More expensive than RainX.

Summary
So far, so good. Im impressed with the product. The only thing that remains to be seen is how long it lasts.

3 Coats of C1 on the screen would be hard to remove

Seriously though i'm using Nanolex Ultra and have been impressed by it's results. It apparently lasts up to 18 months (we shall see) but in the first 3-4 months it has been on it is still going strong. Works similar to the G1 over about 40mph. It will move water at 30+mph if the droplets are big enough.

Heard good things about G1/G3 and if i didn't already have Nanolex i'd be giving it a whirl :happy2:

I have G3. It works at 30mph for sure. Longevity is an issue and I found the rolling stopped after two months, but it still sheeted water better than any paint sealant four months on. Still awesome on the side windows at four months.

I applied the G3 last night and found it did smear the first few times I used the wipers, though that's now settled.

Cool... one of the reasons I'm trying the G1 is longevity.  :happy2:

Gah! I'm tempted to bin my G3. Need to go look up what I'm doing wrong. I originally applied it back in Oct 2011, having polished the glass with G4. Applied G4 all over and it lasted two months. Redid it all two weeks ago and it's pretty much gone! No beading whatsoever!

Try Nanolex Ultra. I applied mine about 4 months ago and it is still beading like day one. Certainly the best I've used.

I applied mine as follows:

Washed, Snowfoamed the car as normal.
Clayed the glass
Polished with Nanolex glass polish
Applied Ultra and buffed off after a couple of minutes.
Applied second coat 24hrs later and again buffed off after a couple of minutes.

Did that on all the windows and haven't needed to apply since.

I have been tempted by the GTechniq offering but as I still have half a bottle of Nanolex I don't think it will be anytime soon I change.

Rob at Gtechniq recommends G1 on the front screen. I've got it on the front & back of both cars (and headlights) and its great - I've got G3 on the side windows + mirrors and thats good :happy2:

Stealth don't bin the G3, give it to me :signLOL:

What confuses me is that I've applied it the same way on two occasions and it has had different effects.

I've have a look into Nanolex.

Could be the temperature when applied. I know when it's colder they say let it cure for a bit longer.

Doesn't really apply with the Nanolex though as it flashes off very quickly. I've never left it any longer than a couple of mins.

Have you tried the G1 Jas?

No. When I ordered the kit G1 was out of stock in most places, so I went with G3+G4.

You might be right about temperature. It was a lot warmer when I applied it the first time.

Brilliant stuff is this G1, took a bit of mastering to work out how to apply properly

Now every time I drive my old mans or brothers car i realise how brilliant it is! Definitely worth the extra over Rain X

It's about £14 for the g1 and g4 how much applications do you get ?. In one application I'd do the front, 2 side windows and
rear.

Also what do you do to maintain it ? Eg just wash the windows with your 2 buckets and wash mitt or do you still use standard glass cleaner with it ?

Post by: stealthwolf on March 03, 2013, 10:06:27 pm
I asked that question on DW and was informed that it was okay to use a glass cleaner as it wouldn't interfere. IMO the G1 is supposed to chemically bond to the windscreen whereas the G3 I had at the time (now called G5) was less impervious. Really only lasted 6-8 weeks on the windscreen but lasted 7-9 months elsewhere on a single application. I recently ordered the G1 kit so will see how this fares in comparison.

Yea let us know how it goes mate, I've been looking at both quite fancied the g5 because I thought it would be Easier to apply but I think theory are both the same tbh, I wouldn't be doing 3 coats though, even though its recommended.

How many applications did you get with the g3/5

Post by: stealthwolf on March 03, 2013, 10:25:47 pm
I applied it once round all the windows about October 2011. Was fine. Tried doing a new application (after using G4 polish) and it seemed to smear. Having had a chat with someone else, I think the problem might be down to longevity. Certainly could do 5-6 cars imo.

I went for a G1 kit with only 15ml of product this time to avoid wastage.

Ah I see, I watched the video on the G1 Stuff and the guy said that you shouldn't even hold it in your hand when applying it as the heat from your hand will cure it in the bottle !!

So it's maybe similar with the stuff you used.

The G1 and G3 are different products and react in different ways. G1 chemically bonds whereas G3 doesn't. Irrespective of this, I applied it the same way each time. What I found the second time was that it smeared everywhere and didn't last as long.

I used it and it was good.  It didn't last anywhere near 20,000 miles for me. But I drive in traffic a lot so I am rarely going fast enough for the Gtech to do its work! Therefore I had my wipers most of the time which I expect reduces the life of the coating.

It really is fantastic stuff, especially when you work out how long it lasts in comparison to the cost.

we are closing in on fly season, sorry i mean summer, and it also helps reduce the amount of mess they make.

Take time to apply correctly and remove and you will be laughing.

To remove with G2 i generally do the wind screen in small squares and buff off with a cloth when the G2 is still wet.

I really like the stuff.  :happy2:
As was previously stated it does take a little more screen wash to clean grime off.
I do find that bug splats don't seem as hard to remove and with decent rain (more than spitting) you don't need wipers at speeds above 35-40! Also ice doesn't form as easily.

A video I got my fiancee to take while I was driving up the M6 in a mental storm:

Please excuse the poor quality mobile phone capture (I don't think we could have chosen lighting to give the camera a harder time).
I think it makes the point though.

Just shows how good this stuff is!

From a safety point of view this stuff is amazing.  If you hit a puddle and the water covers your screen there is hardly any of the no seeing where your going.

Even the GF thinks its good stuff, she drove one of the works pick ups that doesn't have the screen treated and was gob smacked at the difference in the rain!

Bringing up an old thread here but the "how to" videos are not entirely clear in my opinion.

I applied G1 about a month back and it's fantastic but at the time I had a few unanswered questions so here we go:

Screen cleaned, clayed and polished beforehand.

Applied G1 which left a sort of smear or cloudy haze on the screen from specific angles. Same after applying the additional 2 coats.

I then applied G2 (residue remover) and although it cleared up some of the haziness, the screen was still quite cloudy looking.

I had to buff like crazy with quite a bit of force to remove the rest of the residue with a microfiber cloth.

What am I missing here? I was supposed to buff off the haziness right? At that time I thought this haziness was actually the coating I was removing!

I know it's not because the product is working but I did second guess myself at the time.

Post by: xjay1337 on September 02, 2014, 11:42:35 am
No the hazyness is basically excess product that has not cured and bonded. You need to apply thin even coats. It is not "easy" to reply, you do need to buff it quite hard. I didn't need to use any G2 (which is just IPA).
