Please excuse this thread looking messy i have just split and moved a topic into here.
This is quite interesting finding a better place for it to be positioned.
-
....
This is the current legislation : -
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/displayofnumberplates.pdf)
The numberplate mount on the GTI is pointless (and extra weight!!). I noticed that Ed has removed it on his APS Ed30 and I plan to do the same. I shall raise it just a fraction so that it doesn't overlap the lower honeycombe grill and therefore doesn't look like such an afterthought.
The scary thing is that the DVLA are conducting tests for electronic tagging!
Be warned that the Police and DVLA are becoming increasingly draconian in applying the rules about number plates - Mostly because of the benefits of ANPR systems.
-
OK cant figure out how to move from the recycle bin to here so all those posts concerning this topic are locked away so lets just start again sorry Chris.
You say you have moved the plate to the lower front side below the light is it strictly legal
-
Interesting topic. That link could be interpreted in some different ways IE A number plate must be displayed at the front and rear of motor vehicles So could be anywhere on the front?
Thinking about where Joesgti has his, positioned inside the windscreen....

....The DVLA web site is horrific to find anything specific but I'm sure I have previously read legislation which states quite clearly and specifically how the front plate must be positioned, and it's definitely not how Joe has it except in emergency as a temporary measure. I have great difficulty believing how he hasn't been stopped so far.

Another case of how inconsistent the policing is in the UK i suppose
-
^^^^
Not helped by all the extra paperwork the Police have to do, coupled with short staffing.
On a daily basis I see so many instances of mobile phone use while driving, no safety belt being worn, parking on zig-zag areas of pedestrian crossings, cars with only one headlight working, the list goes on.
-
I know what you saying. I think the police have a tough job and do the best that they can. I rwecon policing in the Uk would be better if it was left to the police and not the politicans!!!

Though these two models look like they've been made out of recycled plastic number plates!

Robin - absolutely great picture! Both the car and the two women are sensational!
Where on earth do you get all of these Dub pics from!?

i used to have my number plat ein the window untill i got the 60quid fine
ive removed my number plate holder and stuck the plate to the actual front mask..
-
^^^^
How did you stick your number plate to the front mask, LB? :happy2:
I wondered if the curvature plus hot summer unstuck it.

In case it help's heres a pic of APS's ED30: -

Not sure about using rivets but otherwise with I think it looks better without the backing plate.
-
I personally think that until they start using some sort of tracker based, or GPs based recognition system. Then we are going to have to live with the centre position plate, its a shame but a fact. :chicken:

Surely if your going to do that you'd go for a reflective number plate sticker like an MX5?
-
@RR i used impact adhesive to stick my plate on-
im in-need of a new grille mask soon anyway due to scratches and stone chips so i thought id experiment and see how it looks. it stuck on ok (for now)..
i only used standard adhesive, sticks well but RR your right in the summer im sure it will peel off.
only other option is to drill it like on that photo or use tiger seal and 4clamps to help mould the plate around the mask.. soon as tiger seal sets aint nothing taking it off again
@GREENOUSE do you know were to source the reflective number plate stickers? ive asked a few motoring shops but they told me they cant sell them with the plastic coating?
-
....
Thanks, Steve - That pic very usefully shows how much tidier it all looks also when the plate is positioned upwards a fraction so it doesn't overhang the lower grill.
TC - You may already know that the DVLA have been conducting trials (unsuccessfully so far) with the Police to plant microchips in plates. Incidentally this has been without any public consultation about rights of privacy etc. I understand the benefits but it's a coin with two sides. 'Big Brother' Nanny State will be tagging the driver next!
-
....
Reflective number plate stickers are the way to go. But do they meet all the legal criteria?
LB - Thanks for the info but I ain't gonna be using Tiger glue on my precious carbon!
[Btw, I'll be posting a full review here on this site re my LED DRL's - Job #432!!]
-
I've ordered a "plateless grill" from VagParts, should be here next week. Cheaper than a carbon skin and it means I can put my old grill back on when/if I sell.
I intend to fit a 3/4 plate but will have a "as small as legally possible" plate as well ie min spacing/margins/letter size with no excessive plastic where not needed.
I intend to use velcro to attach the plates so I can swap as needed.

Not that I've looked into this as Im not personaly planning any changes in this dept, but maybe a MK1 MX5 parts supplier would be a good start? :happy2:
-
I have thought about doing something like this for while. How do you think about going down the Alfa 156 route? I will have to make brackets though. Anyone fancy doing a Photochop?
-
Right... I'd better contribute, seeing as I was one of the main reasons this started up! (apologies again for going off topic in the other thread :embarrassed: )
At the moment, I have taken off the plinth (thank god, it looked so damn ugly and ruined the curvature of the front of the car) and just screwed my original number plate back into the screw holes that it was in originally (the screws went through both the plinth and the front mask)
I have got a sticker numberplate that I just haven't got round to putting on yet. Unfortunately it is non-reflective, but thats the risk I'm taking. However, the letters are legal (font, size and spacing)
I really want to give the car the same look as the USA GTI, it looks so much better without a plate - as I'm sure you are all aware. So that means freeing up the glossy black part of the front of the car.
I tried mounting the plate with some plasterboard clips through the bottom grille, so that it hangs down onto the lower valance, but it really looked like the car was sticking out its two front teeth!! Also, mounting it through the lower grille (I think someone on this forum has done that), will surely considerably inhibit airflow to the intercooler!
As UKDUB mentioned below, the Alfa look is certainly one way to explore - i.e. putting the plate underneath one of the headlights (providing you dont have headlamp washers!!!!). With a sticker numberplate it is a challenge to stick it on without making it look angled or squewiff! This is because it follows the contours of the car so much. I think I was experimenting for about 45 mins and only once got it angled correctly!
One other suggestion is one of those pop-up plate holders such as this:
http://www.swiftmotorsports.com/product_info.php?cPath=2049&products_id=3144&osCsid=ffd98cfad50ebf5daea5b033163
So I would guess that you mount it underneath the lower valance and have it so it pops up infront of the grille - but will this inhibit air flow to the intercooler?! I have recently wondered if you could put it to the side a bit, so that maybe it pops up over one of the foglight grilles...something to think about and discuss maybe.
What are your thoughts?

-
Seen this before and thought that I'd be wanting machine-guns popping from the foglights next :jumping: :rolleye:

....I wondered how long it would take you to realise that those 3 LED's in my DRL's are actually gun barrels.
-
Right... I'd better contribute, seeing as I was one of the main reasons this started up!....................................................
..........................What are your thoughts?
....Personally and just my opinion, I think it looks best to either risk being slightly illegal with a stick-on plate or remove the stock plate mount, but keep the central position. Off to the side really spoils the car's visual symmetry and draws more attention to the number plate - It'll look bodged on.
I would not do anything to reduce air intake.

heres mine
Found some grommets in B&Q that fill the plinth holes

Now that is what I think is the perfect size for a numberplate.
:happy2:
-
I've just ordered a plate...
333mm x 101mm
The legal minimum for a A11 GLF style plate...
11mm+50mm+50mm+11mm+50mm+50mm+50mm+11mm = 333mm wide
11mm+79m+11mm= 101mm high
Should be here around the same time as my front grill without holes in.
Standard plate is 520mm by 112mm
-
^^^^
Is it a reflective one, Coco?
-
Yep.
Standard UK font, Standard reflective plastics etc.
Only thing missing is the BS mark and postcode :)
-
where from matey?
-
http://www.fancyplates.com
I have my std rear and 3/4 front already, but thought I'd go for the safer option of the "legal" plate (but still consderably smaller than a std front).
-
The legal minimum for a A11 GLF style plate...
What do you mean by this comment?? And why is the legal minimum different for this than another plate? Or is it?
Hmmmmmm?
-
As in, my reg is "LNN LLL" not "LLNN LLL"
Therefore you can make it smaller... ie 50mm is the min width of a Letter/Number
So someone with a A1 AAA plate could have it as 11mm(margin)+50mm(A)+50mm(1)+11mm(Space)+50mm(A)+50mm(A)+50mm(A)+11mm(margin)
Make sense?
-
Yep.
Standard UK font, Standard reflective plastics etc.
Only thing missing is the BS mark and postcode :)
....As I understand it, these two elements are now very much required to make the plate legal
-
Only if the plate was made after 2001 iirc....
Mine is a V plate... so therefore could have been made before 2001 :happy2:
-
Only if the plate was made after 2001 iirc....
....A small but important point.
Lucky you for the V-plate :happy2:
-
I should be okay then as mine is a J plate  1992

She's hot, but is she a natural blonde or brunette?
only 1 way to check!!! (collar & cuff )
-
or, do what iv done!
have a square one next to one of the fog lights to one side! thing is i know people will poo poo the idea. for those that are going to the meet in nov you can see mine then and make a definitive yay or nay about it!
i think its the best of both worlds. it gets the plate away from the front grill so you can see the design better and also adds to the aggressive look of the car! whack on a carbon mask and your laughing!
on that note, having got an official OSIR mask i found the fit not very good and was rather disappointed. the right side fits perfectly, but the left is slightly too big and doesn't sit well. you cant notice it from looking but i know its there and it annoys me! lol

nups, i think il keep mine the way it is ta :happy2:
also i would probably call the TT shop about the mask, as i got a 70quid jobbie from ebay and its a perfect fit
-
My new grill arrived today..
Easiest mod I've ever fitted... 4 screws and two plastic clips.
£77 inc delivery from Vagparts.
I wanted to keep it original as possible, so didn't go for the stick on CF ones. I can now remove the smooth grill and refit the standard plated one when I sell the car.

pics? :)

yeah know what you mean pal, i always change the size of bike plates (smaller square) and thought that could be the way to go, tomora am going to take the plate off the bike and size it up over the fog grille,
i have to say that on a recent ride out i did get £30 fine, doh

That looks miles better than the standard grill with the plinth :happy2: :jumpmove:
-
It's also not immediately noticable as a 3/4 sized plate.
It all looks better proportioned.
-
And you say it's perfectly legal? (that was not sarcastic...its a genuine question   )
-
No, the 3/4 isn't.....
My next arrival is (full size letters with minimum legal spacing) will be legal.

To be honest Nathan IMO you would not get pulled for having an illegal smaller plate as long as you are not taking the piss! I would go even smaller than Coco's like you say. In this case and this case only the smaller the better  The Police prefer to pull people like me and Joe with German plates and Stadt stickers :jumpmove: :happy2:
-

Ahh ok, i understand!
Post pics of this too when you do it!
-
I'd really like to do this but not sure on the size to order? What do we think?
My reg is only small i.e. A1 ABC..................
-
Just watching the repeat of Top Gear on BBC2 and the Pagani Zonda F's number plate is mounted flat onto a horizontal body panel... i.e. the numberplate is facing upwards to the sky......
How on earth is that allowed! Surely displaying the plate inside the windscreen is better than that!
-
^^^^
As I understand it, certain cars, because of their shape are allowed. Really because there is no other position for the plate.
-
^^^^^^^^^^^ Problem solved guys get yourselves a carbon Zonda. 8)
-

hmm.....interesting. i would have thought there is some sort of solution for the zonda. probably the ugliest plint you will ever clap eyes on.
i doubt vosa will agree there is nothing that can be done to the zondas front numberplate. ANY car has to meet certain standards right? no matter what car it is.
is that not a bit like saying, "well...the engine bay is tiny so we cant fit a catalytic converter in there."
dont get me wrong....if i had a zonda...mine wont even have a front numberplate!!! ive ordered a 300 wide plate for my golf!
-
The Alfa 8c at The Classic car show the other week had a tiny front plate. Asked the guy on the stand and he said they had no probs with plod.
In fact I think Mark got some pics of it............ Flora!!
-
Just loading up the pic now boss! He also said that most 8c owners dont even bother with a front plate!

I have to say...the necessity to have a front numberplate is one of the worst motoring laws in the world. :indifferent: :indifferent: :indifferent: :indifferent: :indifferent:
Ive decided that Im just going to put a small sticker numberplate on, with UK legal lettering (style, not size), and that will have to do.
If I get pulled, then I'll just replace it with a legal one!
-
Just loading up the pic now boss! He also said that most 8c owners dont even bother with a front plate!
Thanks wing man :happy2:
Now that is one tiny numberplate! Wish I could get away with that!
-
hopefully my numberplate isnt that much bigger than the one on the 8c
-

Are you putting it in the normal place, or in another extravagant position?
-
no im going to put it in the normal place. its a 300 wide german pressed plate.
its not bloody arrived yet! im sure it will in the next few days!
its been like christmas every morning in my office for the last few weeks!
must stop buying!!
-
liked the way pirelli had his plate, so took the plate off my bike to see, its not legal (£30 fine in summer) but thought it could
be worth it.
