Title: I Pad 2 query...
Post by: berg on February 29, 2012, 07:00:32 pm
if you buy the 3G one, do you have to pay a monthly subscription to be able to use it?

Also, with I pad 3 coming out will 2 cease to be produced or just be cheaper to buy?

Thanks

Yes you need to sign up to a contract like a mobile phone. It's about £10-£15 a month.

I think the Ipad 2 production will be scaled down but I don't think it will be stopped altogether. Yes the 2 will be cheaper, but they havnt announced it yet so I'd wait untill the 3 is released before getting the 2 if that's what you want to do  :happy2:

if you have wifi at home you can use that, if you have a contract one it means you can use it out and about, will the 2 go down in price much Nah i doubt it the 3 will just cost more

Berg, if you have an iPhone already you only need to buy the wifi iPad
You can create a personal wifi hotspot and connect your iPad to that, thus using your data allowance off the phone thus only paying for one bill

I thought that if you tethered your iPad this way, it wouldn't be taken from your normal data allowance and you would have to pay extra?

That was the case with it was old style of tethering, but the personal hotspot dos it differently

I've never been charged by vodafone for doing it
I've not tried it with my other iPhone on O2

I'm on Vodafone too, I'll have to try it. Is it simple to do?

Your correct mate, when we moved house i used my iphone as a modum for 3 days (lite use) and my bill was £15 more i called vodafone and they said it was the hot spot causing this, its been turned off ever since

Simple to do, setting, person hotspot, turn on then go to the iPad, enter the specific code in your wifi then use

It must be dependant on your contract, I don't get charged, check with your service provider

My advice - get a wifi ipad and then use a mifi for mobile internet connectivity, by far the cheapest option - get a mifi with 3gb of data for £80 - 3gb valid for 3 months, then just top up when you need it.  :happy2:

I've got a wifi and 3G one, got a sim card through Orange

Pay as you go, no monthly fee (only pay for what you use), 5p per mb I think and I got £10 free credit which I still havn't used over a year on

Was ideal for me as I didn't fancy paying for another contract :happy2:

I have my own iPhone 4s with my standard monthly contract.

I tether my iPad to my work iPhone, since the work phone is all fully paid for so I don't have to worry about extra charges etc

I've got a 3G Ipad with a rolling monthly contract for 1GB, costs £7.50 a month from Three. Massively impressed with the 3G coverage especially in rural areas, my iphone on O2 only ever gets 3G signal near cities or large towns making it pointless for tethering as i live and work in the countryside!

I have unlimited data with 3 on my iPhone 4S, so can use the personal hotspot to my hearts content.

iPad 3 announcement is on March 7th. Expect end of March release date. iPad 2 are already being discounted ahead of the announcement. I would personally wait for the iPad 3 though.  :happy2:

Or find a "no time limit" prepay sim on ebay. They do come up occasionally, I just bought one for £50 for my brother, I bought one a few months ago for £20 for myself   :congrats:

Just remember that with any prepay card in an ipad you have to switch off 3G when you are not using it as the credit will disappear if you don't!! :scared:
