I have a dilemma,
I currently drive a series 2 106 rallye, a nippy exciting little thing but am looking to grow up (just a little) . .
I'm desperate for a little bit of VAG (ha . .) but cant decide between a MK5 GTi or a MK4 R32, probably a decision a few of you have made before?
I have a budget of around £9k after some serious saving, 1500 of which will be used for insurance (im 20)
But i think no matter how much i research these things online, theres no way im going to be able to decide until I actually go for a ride! Is there anyone in the Oxford area that would be willing to take me for a spin? whether your stock, stage 1,2,3 dont care! can offer a beer, and some serious GTi ass licking . .
Let me know if anyone has some free time and fancies going for a blast with someone who would appreciate it!
Thoughts on the R32 vs GTi welcome.

1500 insurance wth mines 3k n im 21
Anyway i hope someone can help you as their 2 different beasts
Personally id probably go for the gti as the mk4 is getting older n older

best try both and make a decision! mk 4 r32 better traction then gti but much worse handling and suspension, mk5 r32 if you can stretch great traction but slightly heavy... etc
whichever you choose you can't really go wrong!

tbh mk5 r32 is out his budget.. they start at 8kish.. the rubbish ones

Out of MK5 Golf GTi & MK4 R32 I would say the GTI all the way. Handles better, better mpg, better options & all round a newer gen of car

This was the exact decision I had to make. I went for the MK5 GTI, as the handling is superb, steering 'feel' is amazing, as well as better mpg, easier to tune, and it looks great too on Monza 2's. It is a great drivers car, and it puts a huge smile on my face every time I drive it. These are also fairly cheap to run on servicing and parts.
BUT....having come from a V6 4Motion, I really miss the instant traction of 4wd, and the noise of a V6. The handling of the Mk4 R32 is still very good, and always feels very planted. The mk4 R32 was the launch of the R brand, and VW over-engineered the car to ensure it was a good one. I think I remember reading they were hand built at a loss of 8 grand per unit, so I don't think you need to worry about them being a bit long in the tooth. They also look superb, especially in 3 dr black or Jazz blue. The interior is lovely, with brushed aluminium inserts, classy dials, and the only thing that really ages it is the audio/sat nav, which can all be upgraded.
It really comes down to you deciding what you want from your car, and which you enjoy driving the most. Get test-driving! :happy2:

Dunno mate but if anyone has shopped around it's me! i really recommend tiger.co.uk for anyone under 25, i get cheaper quotes on there than any other comparison sites, even with the same companies! Dont just assume that 3PFT with a massive excess is cheapest as that 1500 is the cheapest quote i got and is on a fully comp policy, oh and i added my mum as a named - classic move.

Car is 30mm lower since these pics.
Such a good little car! i think no matter what i go to i will miss the handling of the rallye!
Mat you barstewards, now an edition 30 really would be the decider! 300bhp from a remap is serious stuff - whats the driveability like? and in the wet? whats your spec?
