it may be a little biased on the gti forum, but which do you prefer r32 or ed30?
i'm not asking which is best, but which would you prefer to own?
both have it's pro's and con's as covered, but which would you go for?
-
when i bought mine i had the choice of both (same price too), and i now own an edition 30 :happy2:
-
R32 for me :ashamed:
-
ED30 all the way for me but I may be a little biased
£500 = BYE BYE R32
-
Love the sound of the R32, but it's ED30 all the way for me, they are so more easy to tune. :happy2:
-
Love my Ed30 on the same principle as the other's there easy to tune for the money :happy2: That said though when its payed off I plan to buy a 2nd hand Deep blue pearl mk5 32 to have as another toy  love the sound of them
-
Id have both tbh, both quality cars
-
Yea,
The sound to me on the R32 of a V6 is just breathtakingly staggering :surprised:
-
I was looking for a new car for the wife (& a bit of a toy for me) hence the GTI looking.
The R32 was not really an option (not because of anything financial) but once looking at Golf's an ED30 became more and more appealing.
Its a great car & I think it will stay with us for a long long time & given that it is a special (not limited) edition I feel it will always have a bit of kudos on the road & retain cash well.
-
Love both of them but its the ed30 for me. If the R came with over 300bhp and a little less weight then it would be the R :happy2:
-
They're both great cars, but quite different to drive :happy2:
It depends what you want from your car, and the roads you drive on most -
the Ed 30 is tuneable, lighter and more "chuckable", cheaper to run, has turbo punch at motorway speeds
the R32 sounds great, has superb traction, is completely surefooted in nearly all conditions and grips like supreglue
-
Another problem is that you can't hear the R32 engine all that well anyway once the windows are up, the air-con on and the tunes coming out of the speakers.
Having said all this though, should my engine decide to go bang next week I'd seriously consider putting an R32/3.2 A3 engine into my Golf's engine bay and use it with the FWD set up (okay, I may be in dreamland here but for the costs involved in 2.0 rebuild vs second hand V6 I think it would be a possibility and I like to be a little left field).
TDI front springs and R32 brakes to handle the weight, GTI nose and R32 rear - does it for me!!!!
Okay, it's just a dream!!!
-
R32 ... though I bought an Ed 30.
When I got the Ed 30 the R32 was silly expensive, terrible on fuel and with road tax from hell (or at least soon to be!)
The situation is now reversed for purchase price and they are far more appealing to me. I could put up with the fuel bills and tax if saving 7 K on the car in the first place ....
The noise and 4wd is very, very appealing .... that said I spent £500 on a remap which turns the Ed30 into something you can't get for that money in an R32 ...
I think in time the Ed30 will be more sought after .... but I'd love an R32. Both are superb.
-
My mate just popped round this evening in his new(ish) '58 plate black R32.
Sorely tempted but its the Edition 30 for me.
-
Actually R32 with twin turbos
i know its a MK4 but you get the idea http://colorgolfsigns.com/173 (http://colorgolfsigns.com/173)
swallow my knob
-
How about this,
A Golf Mk5 R32 Twin Rotrex turbochargers.

They claim it can do 650bhp

Mad or what ???

R32..
theyre kinda going out now aswell.. weve just sold the rest of our stock of them of quite quite cheap... :chicken:
-
....
I think I'd go for the Ed30 but it's a very close call.
When the R32 first came out I was lent one and drove it back-to-back on exactly the same very varied route. In broad terms I found the R32's V6 was awesome but encouraged me into license losing territory - A Milltek would be an absolutely essential mod. Grip was excellent but the GTI felt lighter and more tactile to drive. This was before my GTI was so extensively modified.
I take the view that neither of the GTI/Ed30 and R32 is better than the other, but they are sister cars, each with their own merits.
I use the same route to test drive all the cars which merit it and it has been worked out for it's variety. I'll be testing a new V6 supercharged S4 on it next week and also the Mk6 GTI when it's available.
-
Hmm.. I have to say the R32.... however, spend £1k on the Ed30 and OMG :surprised:   While its not a fair comparison, I much prefer my modified Ed30 to my wife's standard R32. The R32 is beginning to loosen a little with 7k on the clock now, but doesn't do it for me like the E30 does.
-
has to be the R.. its just the daddy.. and that noise :|
-
Neither, I can't drive...
-
Neither, I can't drive...
....Only for now. Time is the healer and may it pass quickly for you (but not for the rest of us!)
-
Out of the 2 it would be Edition 30 for me. :happy2:

Why thank you Sir Red.. Loving the sig by the way.. :happy2:

Just get both! Dilema solved!
Both cars have there major plus points that have already been covered in this thread so although they are both Golfs they are difficult to compare. It would be easier to compare the .:R against a 130i than an ED30. (which it beat easliy on TG BTW) :happy2:
-
Just get both! Dilema solved!
....Ah, but only filthy rich people can afford to do that
-
Not really a direct comparison as others have touched on above.
ED30 if you're looking for overall performance and tuning potential
R32 if you want the safeguard/grip of 4WD and an outstanding soundtrack
That's the way I'd look at it!

You could buy an R32 if you sold the mods on your car Red

You could buy an R32 if you sold the mods on your car Red
....But then I'd have to spend it all again on mods for the R32 :happy2:

Ah yes but that would only be a Milltek... :signLOL:
Being in the enviable position of owning both and as other have stated they both have there own merits. FWD V 4WD or 3 doors v 5 and so on..
Overall it's what YOU want from a car, whether the sound track or outright performance, try them both and then decide that's what we did..R32 was first by the way... :happy2:
-
for me it's the .:R32
it's my ultimate golf, it's that simple, doesn't bother me if other cars are faster or slower and i don't do badge snobbery. i like it for what it is. we just all like the golf in different flavours
