Title: Newbie - Ex Edition 30 Owner
Post by: Sir_dave on March 05, 2012, 03:06:00 pm
Hi there,

Thought i'd better put up a 'hello' thread before bombarding you all with questions  :happy2:

Currently own an e46 M3, 330ci Sport and 182 Trophy (for track), but currently looking to go back to one car so that i can save for a house deposit ...

Used to have an Edition 30 a couple of years ago, so know how good the Gti is as an all rounder, but have less budget to play with this time round though so looking for a normal Gti. Most important thing for me is motorway mpg - currently do a commute of 85 miles a day, which as you can imagine, isnt brilliant in the M3, although i am averaging 29mpg in it, so im not that hard a road driver

Ed30 used to average 29mpg as well (although that was a DSG), so hoping that the normal Gti will do a lot more? I've heard up to 40 is possible? Would only be looking at a manual btw, hated the DSG with a passion, hence why i sold the last one ... boooooooring.

Pic of the old golf:

Don't think much in it with mpg between ed30 and gti, but if your getting 29 out of the m3 the golf will be getting mid 30s at same speed, nice collection of cars there mate.

Welcome  :happy2: I'm Pushing mid 30's on a motorway run to work for an 80 mile round trip in a std Gti.  Mind you I drive it like an old fella :sad1:

If your looking to save on fuel then a gti/ed30 isn't the way to go.
Personly with that sort of mileage I would be looking at (dare I say it) a desiel motor  :sad1:

:surprised: That sure looks like my car! Silver, 5dr, DSG, rear tints, same aerial... was it a 57 reg, starting with NV?

That does look like your car Mandy...

On the subject of fuel consumption. If you train your right foot and go 5mph slower, you will see much better mpg

agree with Maxload, GT 140 for an economical motoring with just a few less thrills

You bought it from my boss Matt - was his for a while, then my pool car for 6 months/15k miles.

Never raced, rallied or abused lol  :driver:

I see you've played with it quite a bit since, will have to have a read/show him your thread!!!

Re: the suggestions of a Derv. Im fine thanks, having punted a 206 hdi around the 'ring for 11 laps, i can safely say that its not something i'd ever like to do again. 35mpg is fine tbh. In fact, anything over 30 is ok if it means i can flog two of the cars and have one that takes all the commuting/track/business duties in its stride.

Welcome mate, I'm in a manual normal GTi, and I'm getting 27-28 around town, but on a long run on motorways, I get 35-36 at a steady 70-80.

Good luck with your search, there's a reason why manual starts with man!  :signLOL:

Depends on your budget for a GTi mate but with Ed30 prices dropping so much in last year you might get one for similar money as a GTI, I read on another post that a Guy got a silver ED30 07 plate  for 10200 with FSH low miles, thats not far off GTI money and a remap in an Ed30 will give you roughly the same power as your M3 anyway (bearing mind weight diff of around 250kg), its well known that a re-mapped Ed30 stays with an M3  :P

Nice cars btw

Oh man, don't tempt me now. I been pining after my M for months now. Been seriously contemplating getting into one again even though I only had the Jetta now for a few months, lol. Good luck with your search.

Thought i should update this out of politeness ...

Ended up buying an R32 in the end lol. Still averaging 29mpg, but meh, the noise makes up for it  Will keep lurking on the forum though, will be wanting some bits & bobs over the coming years and im sure some of the Gti parts are interchangeable with the R32  :happy2:

Fited some of Mandy's paddles already as it happens!!!

Yeah, i would have probably preferred manual, but the spec of the car, & the deal available meant that i would have been daft not to buy it really  :happy2:
