Title: oh good..... rust on my wings :|
Post by: johntheboy on March 05, 2012, 08:30:51 pm
Well similar to wany people I wash washing and waxing my car and I've noticed small beads of rust on the top of the arch.  At first I didnt know it was a common problem until I went to a body shop at home and they told me I'd be best to have the wings replaced and the car sprayed at a cost of £745.  He said he could try and rectify the wings at £490 but couldnt put any garuntee on the work.

I just wondered what other people have done regarding this?  I know some people have managed to get the work out of VW, however I didnt buy the car brand new and I had a 6 month waranty but that's now expired.  Although I've read something about a 12 year garuntee on their body's.  Wasnt sure where I stood with this or what anyone else has done to sort it out?

Many thanks!

Would have thought you should have a case for repair under warranty . in my opinion no mk 5 should be rusting

You have a valid warranty claim as long as your wings haven't had a previous repair done. Get in contact with your nearest local dealer.

I'm going to spend some time tonight reading that thread. Out of interest do you know many people who've had success with this? As I say I've not standard warranty left on the car so not sure what I could claim against?

Many thanks!

Noticed this a few weeks ago when I had the car on my mates new lift, just caught a glimpse of the bubbling. Had to put a new rivet in the siren case and whilst down noticed that it was going rusty on the inside, both sides

Is the rust warranty no quibble? Or do you need full VW history? My car is a November 2005 and hasn't been in the dealer for three years since they smashed my windscreen doing routine work in the engine bay...

I'm pretty sure aslong as your wings are original with original paint you will have a case with VW. Also if there is no other damage around the affected area. Fingers crossed for you mate

My car has no rust on the wings ..yet . how would i go about removing the inner arch ? thinking of a major clean and then some wax oil . has anyone else done this as a precaution?
Title: Re: oh good..... rust on my wings :|

Well I was at my usual local dealer on Saturday picking up parts and asked about getting an appointment for a paint inspection - was told I could get one at the end of July!

Got in touch with another dealer who told me to pop in whenever, so I did today as I was passing. Turns out I should've made an appointment as the fella was rushed off his feet, but he kindly did the inspection anyway and will forward the pics and report onto VW. I'll be going there from now on.

Hoping I get a repair as it's getting bubbly very quickly now.

Sorry to hear John.

If it's any cancellation it seems to be more common than any of us would like it to be on the MK5 GTI. Under and partially on my near side rear wheel arch I've got a patch of corroded bubbly paint about half an inch long which will need sorting. Plan to do force my local dealer to address it in the summer before the 7 year paint/corrosion warranty will be up  :scared:

IMO having seen a few rusty MK5's now, it is a inherent design fault.  The inner wings are not secured well enough, and chafe at the inside of the wing and the wing lip, when allied with road debris (grit, salt etc) it creates fret juice (effectively a grinding paste) it eventually wears through, and corrosion forms, which spreads unchecked.

If you do get the corrosion sorted, make sure you sort out the inner wings, perhaps by trimming, or better securing, or eventually it will reappear.

Just my opinion.

I haven't noticed any of this yet. Hopefully prevention is better than cure. How can I achieve better securing?

Went to Derby VW Paint & Body on Saturday morning. The lad there told me how common bubbling on the arches was. He went round the car with a PTG, took some pictures and said he would submit it to VW. Being on original wings and paint he said he would be calling soon to arrange a date for the work to be done. Only problem is, wings are on back order!

I don't honestly know without looking.

Quick thought may be to trim the edge slightly?  so it can move, or use some of the below to secure the arch liner, and give it something to chafe against?

Guy today told me it is more common on the diesels due to engine vibration.

Wonder if the inner arches have been changed in design as this is less common from 2007 onwards, am I right?
Could do with a new offside one anyway.
Title: Re: oh good..... rust on my wings :|
Post by: Luka on April 05, 2012, 09:21:21 pm
Apparently the foam liner doesn't help either. Like a sponge which constantly keeps water on the wear from the liner rubbing on the wing.

Post by: skard on April 23, 2012, 01:33:54 pm
Well I've heard back from the dealer - provisionally got 100% goodwill but he needs confirmation from Claims (reckons it's a formality).

Unsure yet whether it will be a repaint or whole new wing on both sides.

I need a new arch liner on one side anyway so shall replace them - have they been modified to prevent this in later years, does anyone know?

Good news on the 100% goodwill. What VW garage was this at? Did you have full VW service history? I only ask as I have a 2004 Golf tdi and have thre dreaded rust on both arches, one sill and round the boot lid.  :sad1: I'm from around Edinburg though so doubt I'll be going to the same garage as you. Fingers crossed you hear back doon with it all confirmed.  :happy2:
Title: Re: oh good..... rust on my wings :|
Post by: skard on April 23, 2012, 02:03:19 pm
It's one in Newcastle.

My Golf has little history with VW, I got it just out of warranty and it had been in a dealer once prior according to the history. I used a different local dealer for a £1000 repair (ECU died two months out of warranty - not a penny from VW on that occasion and they caused/rectified glass damage which put me off using them again) so perhaps that influenced the VW decision.

To be honest the paint inspector didn't ask about history etc, he saw the rust & it's textbook. He seemed confident they'd sort it. Just sitting tight until the confirmation comes in.

Give it a bash bud, I know it's tempting to wait until it's really badly gone to help your chances but if they refuse goodwill then it costs more for you to put right.

Thanks for the reply mate. Can you put up some pictures of how bad the rust parts are to give others (and me) an idea of what VW will accept.

Cheers  :happy2:

I'd say your wings are much worse than mine!

There's lots of precedents out there for you to arm yourself with, if you leave it too long they may say you could have acted sooner and so on.

I intend to go visit VW on Friday afternoon, I have the afternoon off. Is there any documentation I should arm myself with? Also I'm just south of Edinburgh and intend on going to VW Western at either Fort Kinnaird or Gorgie Road. Has anybody on the forum had any experience with dealers around about Edinburgh. Let me know, cheers.

 :sad1:   :ashamed:

Bad times. I must admit corrsion didn't even cross my mind when I bought a GTI. The paintwork is in very good condition generally too, it's had roughly a pro detail every year and I've always used recommended products with interim washes.

The only thing I've noticed is that my patch hasn't got any worse since using Poorboys Natty Blue, so that's something.

That's a real rash that Dodds  :sad1: Hope you can get it remedied mate.

I use Fort Kinnaird and they are spot on! They dont have a bodyshop at either the Fort or Gorgie though , They have their bodyshop in Broxburn and will tell you to take it there.

I'm not an expert on the claim process but seeing as the dealer would be claiming costs back from VWUK I can't see why they wouldn't submit as strong a case for you as possible.

The rust on the wings are a known issue, so I think/hope they will take that one on the chin. The other patches you may have to fight for?

The first dealer I went to told me I'd need to wait almost four months for a paint inspection! The one who did the claim, I managed to catch the fellow by chance. It might be worth ringing in advance and checking if the inspector will be around, so you can maybe try other dealers locally if need be.

Good luck bud.

and the 16-page thread on our forum here that was linked to earlier.

Well my Golf has gone in to the dealer bodyshop today - initially they were going to try grind out the damage and repaint. However they quickly decided new wings would be best, so awaiting VW authorisation. Hoping it still turns out 100% goodwill.

Was also surprised to be given a 61 reg A1 TFSI as a courtesy car  :driver:
Hasn't helped quash my desire to go back to a petrol...

After reading this I had a look at my arches and noticed a very slight bubbling on both front arches.

I sent an email to specialist cars Aberdeen this morning and got a call back within half an hour and they are getting me in tonight for them to take pictures.

Seems like I have a good vw dealer here

Got my car back today - got two brand new wings which I'm delighted with and 100% goodwill.

Anyone in the North East with this concern - try VW Benfield on Scottswood Road, Newcastle. The staff there bent over backwards to get this done even though I had never used them.
Complete opposite to the dealer in Durham who I (used to) use and told me I'd have to wait almost 4 months for a paint inspection!!
Title: Re: oh good..... rust on my wings :|

If anyone plans to go to a dealer about this it would be a good idea to read all of this thread and also the thread red robin posted to arm yourself with information

When I arrived at the dealer I was told it was only a 3 year warranty but vw might offer to pay 70% as a goodwill gesture or reject the claim

If I am paying 30% of the cost it better be for 2 new wings and not just a repair.

Depending how things go with this claim I might use the dealer for all my servicing as I will only trust my normall mechanic or a main dealer to touch my car

I never even thought such a high value car would have any rust issues
Title: Re: oh good..... rust on my wings :|
Post by: skard on May 25, 2012, 05:23:42 pm
I was also told by the bodyshop that there have been cases of VW refusing repairs as the rust was left too long.

So if anyone is thinking of letting the rust get a bit worse before having it inspected, it could go the other way for you.

I am waiting for Kings Lynn VW to call me back about a rust spot on my MY08 ED30, its located on the tailgate right under the lip where rear screen is, better description is where rear wiper is the tip of it, its right under there as if its been collecting water, asked VW about it when it had the Cambelt service 4 weeks ago, they took pics and said they would be in contact, I followed up on Monday and they said the chap I need to speak to was "On the other line" and would call me back, well today's friday!!!, that must be one hell of a long phone call!!.

I shall be calling them again Monday

Mine went to the bodyshop yesterday, both front wings bad rust and both sills.
Called me today to say that the wings are absolute scrap and no point trying to repair them.
Apparently VW wont cover replacing my wings, so im paying for two new wings at 75+vat each and they're covering the rest. Im still happy enough tbh. Can't wait to get it back fri, im paying extra to have my whole front end painted to have it sitting perfect.

Has to be dealers and how they word/process your warranty claim I think. I work for Seat and deal a lot with warranties, a lot is down to them. Im pretty sure one if not both my wings have seen previous paint anyway so I was happy enough to pay for new wings, kind of glad the whole lot wasnt rejected!

Still need to get my wings looked at. I have a local bodyshop painting up my rear GTI valance, front and rear Votex Spoiler and 3D badge this week so will either go to VW after that or get the bodyshop to quote me. If wings are only £75+vat each then if I'm rejected by VW then I'll be getting my own wings and my local paint shop to paint them.

p.s. I was gutted when they password protected that useful .pdf. However I checked on my computer this morning and I have it saved already.

anybody else needing it I can send it too (no FB likes needed.  lol)

Also I'm just south of Edinburgh and intend on going to VW Western at either Fort Kinnaird or Gorgie Road. Has anybody on the forum had any experience with dealers around about Edinburgh. Let me know, cheers.

I've heard good things about the one at the Fort... Reading this has got me all worried so going to check the car out after work and if I see anything will be heading straight to the fort to get it checked!

BTW as an aside, what normal garage do you us? VW or independant?

Good stuff. I might try and head up there at the weekend (still not been yet ) or any day that the sun is out. I have bubbling around various parts of the car so a bright sunny day is best for them to see and photograph them.

Teo10, I have started using Autohaus Edinburgh up at Bilston Glen, Loanhead. They're Audi specialists, one of them Audi's ex-RS Master Tech, but they deal with VW, SEAT, Skoda, Range Rover, Porsche, etc. Excellent reputation and I've never been let down by them yet. Good pricing and they are a REVO dealer too.  :happy2:

Keep us posted whether your car has rust or not and if you do go to VW and what they say.

Cheers  :happy2:

I took mine to Eastern Western Motor Groups bodyshop yesterday in Broxburn and had the car inspected , photos taken and paint depths recorded. Just a waiting game now.....

Any news? I'm currently at the same stage as you awaiting the decision for repair under warranty...

Nothing as of yet , they did say it might take up to four weeks. I will get inters out of the way (I was worried about showing the car on the stand with the rusty wings - I doubt they will be visible under the rain though!) and chase them up next week.
