So, we're you quoted for a 'chain' then as our GTIs don't have one?!

I'd be worried if my garage quoted me for something my car doesn't even have.

Check it out I'd say

it's somthing to do with the camshaft^

also OP it could either be the camshaft adjuster or the timing belt could be off by one tooth

I have the same noises you, apparently its common for the AXX engine, and i'll be having my cambelt done soon so if that doesn't fix it , its most likely to be the camshaft adjuster

The cambelt only drives one of the cams the other is driven by a chain from the other one.

I had mine done a few years ago, (AXX engine) it turned out to be the adjuster that was noisy.  That also turns out to be the expensive part,  all in I think I paid just under £700.

They have a chain and a belt. One for inlet and one for outlet i believe. As mentioned above, it will be the adjuster which is more expensive than the chain and tensioner. i learnt this the hard way.

As far as I can remember the chain and tensioner should be less than £100.  The adjuster alone is around £300, but VW, so TPS as well do a repair kit which when my car was repaired was around £280.  This 'repair kit' consists of an adjuster, adjuster/chain housing, gaskets and bolts, so parts alone came to £380 - £400.
Please dont feel the guy was making you out to be a twat,  most people if they are new or not mechanically minded to the 2.0 TFSI engine will not realise there is a chain as well as a a belt  :happy2:

I will put his for future people seaching this topic.
All TFSI engine cars have a cam belt which should be changed at 60k or 4 years.  Its an option to change the water pump (do it) they also have on the opposite end of the engine a cam chain (right hand side under a aluminium housing) an adjuster and a chain tensioner.

I should add that you should budget for an adjuster kit as well, as 9 time out of 10 this is the problem.  If you change the adjuster at the same time you will save on labour charges at a later date if it doesnt cure your problem.  By the way, mine was quiet went cold and noisy when warm (on idle).  Give Awesome a ring (0161 776 0777), they took pictures of my worn adjuster, they should still have them  :happy2:
