-
I'm currently on Vermin 100mb BB and it's great.
However moving in June and the area i'm going to only has pauperband so going to be slumming it for a while till they upgrade, which according to BT they aren't planning to before 2016 :sad1:
-
i was surprised at the deal to be honest, unlimited with free evening + weekend calls saves me £5 a month over my 4mb connection i used to have, now at 40 :pomppomp:
if your a new customer i think theyre offering a £50 sainsburys voucher :happy2:

Been on infinity a while now and well happy with it over the 4mb orange i used to have :jumpmove:
Was a bit surprised when they installed it as i thought it was fibre optic so would need to rewire into the house but its only fibre optic to the exchange at the end of the road then normal line to your house :stupid: guess thats why it can't get as high as virgin but still very happy

Infinity is what is known as FTTC or Fibre to the Cabinet. It does lead the way for FTTH or Fibre to the Home.
Virgin is only Optical (Fibre) to the cabinet and the rest is Coax through the front door. After that the customer experience is down to the protocols being run over said medium's.
-
Got infinity installed a cuple of weeks ago when we moved house. :happy2:
I was chatting with the engineer and he said that BT (Openreach) are running a trial at present to change the frequency of the signal which is capable of giving upto 80mb connection without any other changes. :happy2: Now great minds than mine, on here will be able to confirm if that is possible. Apparently that are planning on rolling this out from sometime in the Autumn.
-
I think we are able to get it from a few days time. Should be a bit quicker that the 5mbps we get at the moment.
-
what upload speeds and download speeds are you all getting at the mo ?

Just tested and got 32mb down 8mb up. Running a work pc on a VPN over the same connection so not sure if that effects things. General had circa 35mb down and 7 - 8mb up at night. :happy2:
-
think i m only getting 9.8mb download and 1.1mb upload but its still quick so might look into bt and others and see what i get in my area
-
40 down and 10 up :happy2:
-
Apparentlty other providers will in the not to distant future be offering an Infinity type product (fibre to Cabinet), since the infrastructure is owned by Openreach. BT are just the first organisation to get a product to the consumer.
-
103mb down 9mb up

As mentioned in this thread already virgin are currently the only major provider offering fibre to your house so you will receive a more reliable service than fibre to cabinet offerings such as infinity.
Virgin are also doubling the speed for pretty much all their customers over the next 6 months - I am on 50mb and received an email a few months back stating I am getting upgraded to 120mb by October for no extra charge.
So worth checking with them first before you jump ship and use it as a bargaining tool to get a better rate :happy2:
-
bt do offer 100mb in some areas
-
There are not enough hours in the day to warrant 100MBPS internetz :signLOL:
.... time to get the wrist support out.

Really? Where's that then as it's not national? Even the 100mb service is coax from the cab.
-
as a service technician for virgin media, i can confirm we do not run fibre to the home, it is to the cab only and co-axial from there. i know bt have plans to run fibre to the home but not for many years, and as i understand it our network (VM) is capable of around 400 mb :happy2:
Mat, it sounds like you are only on the 10mb package which is running perfectly. We cap uploads at 10% of your download speed. But all our customers wil be getting their speed doubled this year (except 100mb customers who will get a reduction on their bill)
-
I thought the 100mb folk were going to 120mb as well.
-
FAIL on my part there :stupid:
Just checked my e-mails and I think your right mate :happy2:
-
Yup I haz had a letter from the boss man himself - Usain Bolt.
I get upgraded to 120mb at no extra cost.
So 30 get 60, 50 get 100 and 100 get 120.
If I were staying here I'd be downgrading to 50mb and getting the free upgrade.
-
think i am on the large package with unlimited download too so god knows
-
Do you get free Ring Dings?

It's perfect for my needs and is fast enough
-
Just ordered 40mb BT :-)

Rich. :happy2:

If i had the choice and stayed in a covered area it would be virgin 100mb. as I dont understand bt - theres no plan on where gets this infinity rather than roll out over town they do one then move to the other side of town then stop, then do another then stop? tbh its a bit of a joke fibre to cab then a copper tail out to the old cack network, cutting edge not. the only folks who can get 80meg on their network are the ones who have an infinty cab near them and stay on a brand new development that the builder puts in the correct network to the homes. If virgin would spend on expanding their network they would do well.
-
As you know Keith I am entirely impartial.
In my opinion BT's big plan is to give as many people fast broadband and then roll out their next gen network across it. Their coverage is second to none and even on older area networks the tails are so short the effect on bandwidth is negligible.
Time will tell provided BT haven't got rid of all their engineers to do the work. :ashamed: :popcornsoda:
-
Virgin are going to be expanding their network over the next few years, but it also depends on the local councils allowing us to dig the streets up. From what I understand, for the areas we can not cover we will be offering broadband through bt systems (mailnly for those living out in the sticks) as bt's network if publicly owned (paid for by tax payers) so we can have access to it where as our network is private so only we can use it :happy2:
-
I thought the big plan would mean that under LLU agreements BT would also gain access to VM's network.
I'm pretty sure BT's network isn't publicly owned as they have been a private company since the 80's and if it needs fixing they end up doing it from their pockets not from public funds. Any agreements for LLU sharing that allow competitors access to BT's network are only put in place to ensure fairness by Ofcom.
