Title: Thoughts on Sky F1 HD Channel
Post by: Janner_Sy on March 13, 2012, 07:11:16 pm
I am a massive fan of this new channel and the team running it.

Initially i thought it was going to be rubbish, but they have everything from practice seessions, qualifying, the GP on.  They also have race preview and review programs, tech shows, biographies, previous races and GPs etc etc

And you get to look at Geogie Thompson regularily

I've got it on virgin, unfortunately it's an extra £22 a month for the skysports package.

For me they should have done a Sky Sports Motorsport HD rather than just F1. It would have been so nice if they covered the GT Championship, BTCC, DTM etc.

Totally agree the BTCC coverage is seriously lacking these days and its getting even harder to find any decent rallying coverage.

That does sound like a good idea but I imagine they would have a number of clashes when races take place on the same day :happy2: :happy2:

i think sky/virgin have missed out here

i reckon plenty of people would have paid a subscription for JUST the f1 channel but most won't fork out the extra for either HD or Sports Packages

I'd have paid an extra £5 a month I think but i'm buggered if i'm paying £20+ extra

Agreed! I would gladly pay an extra £5 or so for just the F1 Channel. I don't really need the other Sports channels (the only other thing I might watch is the Golf or maybe one or two football games but can live without it)

Agree with Hill and Brundle but not too sure on their version of Jake. Also agree with the Georgie Thompson comment she ain't got a clue and IMO not all that, more chip shop fit, and not a patch on Lee McKenzie.

As for no adverts thankfully there isn't any during quali or race but during the build up from 5 till 6 and there was one every 5 minutes.

Much room for improvement.

If you just want the F1 you don't need the sports package. If you buy the HD package for £10 a month you get the F1 channel. I know more than a fiver but not too bad.

I am impressed with the coverage so far, for the first race they are doing ok, some bits need a small bit of work though.

Simon Lazenby (aka BBC Jake) use to do the Rugby Union coverage and was alright.

Sky took the decision to keep this free if you have the hd subs already, making for some, more people would find Sky's choice more VFM and join...

I can tell you know, as a person on BSKYB's payroll, I'm rather busy just now, so it's worked out well

Agree, and if she's there for eye candy, have a laugh, she's a dwarf (no offence to those of diminutive stature)

Hill and Brudle are doing well together but they definitely need a better presenter to bring it all together (not sure of the chap's name) as he is not cutting the mustard in my book!  :happy2:

Hill, Brundle, Kravitz all good. Don't know the other 'Jake' replacement but he sucks and the other commentator needs to drop a Valium or 2. Time will tell I suppose. Fookin hate the adverts.  :fighting:

I can't believe that they expect you to subscribe to another channel to watch the F1 this year.

Furry muff if they want to make a dedicated channel for it but at least make it available to anyone. Are they just highlights on the Beeb?

.....as you can prob tell I'm on Virgin and I don't subscribe to the sports channels. :ashamed:

Pinkham Apart from the nice looking Pet Camel, isnt that good looking up close... Maycup and air brushing do her alot of favours. i agree that the coverage wasn't as good as the Beeb but i really dislike the Beeb now for selling F1 fans down the river.

Georgie - you'd think she was fit if you saw her stacking shelves in a supermarket but nah typical sky bird with too much make-up and big hair and then sounding a bit common

Lazenby - ok but not as good as Jake Humphries (who i thought was a bit too anoying at first - i'm a little boy who's dream has come true, look at me, look at me - but who i thought got better and was pretty polished at presenting F1 just a few races in

Croft - perfect excitement levels for practise, for which he's done a very good job for a while now - he makes it seem interesting. However as someone else said when it comes to the race he needs to take a chill pill, slow down instead of trying to say all his sentences for the next 5 minutes in the next 5 seconds and pay more attention to what is actually going on.

Pinkham - competent enough though no Lee McKenzie but if she instructs one more person what to do after she's finished interviewing them (something like "well go back in the garage and enjoy it".. to Button's Dad WTF?!) i'll track her down and slap her silly myself (possibly with a different appendage than expected  )  :chicken:

Brundle - fine

Hill - Good

Kravitz - Good

overall 7/10

oh and as much as John Button is a nice man, i don't really care what he thinks or is going through part way through the race. By all means have a word with him after the race if his son has won but really who gives a frigging in the rigging?

I'd class coverage of the race as the program from start to finish, not just the race segment.

lol...should of put a wager on that was coming :signLOL:

I thought as a F1 ethusiast, with all the features offered including the Red button interative, I thought was excellent.

Not a bad effort for a 1st Grand pix, which I remember certain people saying the same when BBC started the coverage from ITV   :stupid:

After watching quail live yesterday morning I wasn't convinced.

Great to hear Brundle but Crofty was so excitable an annoying. So for the first time in years I didn't watch the whole race so opted to watch the BBC highlights this arvo. It's such a shame as the old format was perfect, now I like bits of both not not all of either!

Great result for Button and a shame the little German jumped Hamilton during the SC. Agree with everyone else that it's time for Lewis to change the record and grow up!!

Top comment!
She was the reason he had a bad season last year.
I thought it would be his season this year until he got back with it......

On coverage, cant say, I was on a plane lol, but watched the BBC on my return rather than Sky, maybe next year when they had chance to get on groove it will be better!

Seems like the BBC is loosing it as they have now given up horse racing too. To be honest although sky f1 wasn't bad i think even when ITV had it, it was better than sky.
I just think that no one can do it better than the BBC with Jake, DC and EJ

As for Lewis and that thing he calls his girlfriend, he needs to chill out on the woman thing and do what he does best with NO distractions!!!!
Racing is the name of the game and women are nothing but a pain!!!! :P

The BBC is publicly funded. They simply can't afford luxuries like F1.

Yup then BBC Sports budget has been slashed hence the loss of various sports.   :sad1:

All they seem to have now is Athletics and Championship Football, oh and the occasional Rugby match. :sad1:

Does seem to be the "same" show each week just with different cars, really do like the one off specials though! :happy2:

I thought one of the reasons for the BBC this year was the Olympic coverage they are promising.  :popcornsoda:

BBC Sport will have its budget cut by 15 per cent under plans to slash £700 million from annual spending, putting coverage of minority sports at risk and raising questions about the corporation’s ability to compete for rights to major properties including England matches currently being marketed by the Football Association.

The Olympics is the most expensive sporting event to broadcast. The broadcast rights run into many millions.

Another thing to remember is we currently have a very anti-BBC government.
