I went up against a std R at the Pod meet in Feb and other than the first 60', he diddnt pull any further out and im sure that i was closing towards the end....

The r is definatly the quicker car as std but you can easily make the GTI faster and still come in less £££££££

Some entertaining stuff!

At the end of the day the R32 has to put the power through a big differential to get it to the ground so its WHP will be similar to that of many other low hp 2wd cars.

I remember the days of beating impreza's with big power figures in my RWD silvia.

DUBWAYDAN - Whats the full spec on the car? The chap on R32oc were on about the dump valve noise? Guessing thats aftermarket?

a few of those r32 guys seem a bit snobby when it comes to 'lesser models; as they refer to them.

i have only replied to the post letting the guy know what it was and theyre sayin stuff like they'd prefer to walk than drive my car

"Lesser Models" ?? Hardly, with R prices through the floor there's nout in the price. I'd much rather own an ED30 than an .:R

Thats probably a fair comment. But if your not doing many miles, then MPG figures are just numbers at the end of the day.

engine spec:

bmc cda filter
forge bov spacer
revo stage 1

I've heard about these spacers/adapters which supposedly make a true atmospheric dump of the usually recycled air. Not sure how well this would go down with the DSG box. In the past I have always found fully atmospheric dump valve's tended to make gear changes very lumpy. (In contrast to the smooth change the DSG box has.)

Heres interesting reading:

R32 Power-to-weight = 163 bhp/tonne

ED30 Power-to-weight = 167 bhp/tonne

GTi Power-to-weight = 148 bhp/tonne

All information taken from parkers "facts and figures" website using stock figures.
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/ (http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/)

I know which one I'd choose, oh wait, I already did.

Hahaha - That was amusing - what is it with R:. owners ? Bet the guy is  ! Brilliant.

I've smoked quite a few R:.'s it is quite funny - although they do sound nice.

Taking the weight from here http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=150194 as 1357kg a 300bhp remap power to weigh ratio will give ...............

225 bhp/tonne

Going off my last RR result and what it weighed when put on proper car scales at the 30 - 130mph event, mine gave just under 250bhp/tonne...

(Awaits for Jonny C to give his Camparo T1 rivaling figure)

A stock MK4 R32 weighs in at 1510kg. That said, your R32 would need to be putting out 613bhp to have 406bhp/tonne.

So either its a monster, you've stripped her out, or your maths is wrong.

Nearly as bad as the leon cupra owners

Has anyone of us tried to compare our cars to an ED30? Im under no disillusion its quicker in the dry and rolling!

If i wanted a quick car i wouldnt have gotten an R32 (why does everyone think we believe we have really fast cars?) It simply perfectly suits my needs untill i move out of london (i use fast starts so a 300bhp fwd hatch doesnt suit me as well as an easier to use 250bhp 4wd hatch)

I never said the gti or ed30 are lesser models either, far from it, they just offer something different. The GT is a lesser model, its supposed to be hence the lack of the 'i' after gt.

 :drinking:

I agree :drinking: - The GTI/Ed30 and R32 are sister cars and neither is 'better' than the other - They are each slightly different versions of an excellent car and we each buy whichever suits our individual needs and desires.

Willy-waving is such a waste of time. :rolleye:

I hope you dont believe what you just said... All things considered I do believe a R32 was beaten by a 1.4TSI or whateva its called. You should be the last to judge all things considered.

I'm sorry but I agree the GT is a lesser model than the R32/Ed30 orGTi hence it cost less has less power lower spec etc
It's like the SE spec cars are lesser models than the GT
You can't really compare the R8 to the RS4 as they are completely different models and do completely different things
If someone said you can have an RS4 or an S4 would you consider them the same?

No one said it was a lesser vehicle but like I said earlier it's down to each individuals requirements, funds and practicality.
I just think people need  to enjoy what they have and realise not everyone likes or thinks the same.
After all that would make life a little boring and we'd all be driving boxes..
As for the so called beating was it really a race?
And after all it was only an old MK4..lol
Just my opinion of course...

The thing JPC is that it is not lesser....

The GTI, .:R32, Edition 30 and GT's are all the same car. Its just the trim and engine that varies.

1. Your cars build quality is the same as Jules right?
2. Your car came from the same factory?
3. You car passed the same quality tests as the R32 etc go through correct?
4. Your vehicle was designed by VW? The same blokes that designed the GTI, R32 etc etc.
5. Your car is a MK5 is it not?

Then how on earth is it lesser compared to any other MK5? Jules is comparing Apples to Apples and because yours isnt as Red/Green as his he sees it as lesser. Thats rubbish and narrow minded in my opinion.

Now.... On another level...

If you had a Polo and Jules had a .:R and he said the Polo was lesser I would agree. Its a different platform. Different design and is a completely different car for a completely different market.

Once again. Here things change because you are comparing Apples to Grapes. There is a difference. Its like comparing a Veyron to a Porsche.

Am I making sense?

just my two cents, i have a GT and have no problem agreeing with the fact it is a "lesser model" in the golf mk5 range, comparably!

Can i just add to this it is simple common sense realizing that all of the models can fit into a category and in general the next one up in the range is a better car  :rolleye:
What caused people to raise their eyebrows is comments like i would still rather walk or never bother looking at inferior models this is being elitist and slightly disrespectful to people who may have choose a lower specced car, because it suited their needs.

what have i started  :scared:

i have to say i dont agree with you on this one jules,

im sure there are lower spec'd gti's than my car as it is pretty much exactly the same as a gti in its current state bar the engine.

ie it has full leather, 18" charlestons etc. i cannot see how it is a 'lesser' model.

for the record i didnt actually beat the r32, i was behind him at the lights, we set off and i kept up with him untill we stopped for a speedy camera  :happy2:

i think another 'meeting' is in order to see how they actually compare together  :innocent:

Sorry just got back from work  :happy2:

The GT is a lesser model, its the lower model of the same platform. The R32 is the flagship golf and the standard golf with the smallest engine is the lowest model.

Its like comparing a 318i sport to an M3, not like a porsche to a veyron or an R8 to an RS4, there completely different models.

Quote
Skip forward to today and the premium Golf is no longer marked out by the letters ‘GTI’. It’s now the R32 that tops the range

Apologies for the juvenile remarks, was offending the guy by joking about his car which was well out of order!

I feel like I have stepped back into Preschool.... No wait... Its like being in a all boys hostel again... You know? Where teens wave their willy's around trying to be better when they are all the same...

This is my last comment on this thread. I have always noticed a bridge between the .:R peeps and the GTi peeps... I come from an unbiased opinion. I feel my stand point is valid.

No wonder the world doesnt work. BTW. Well out of order doesnt work when you do it over and over again. Dont retaliate to this as Im not going to reply.

You seem to have a big issue with R32 owners, or something bad happened to you in the 'boys hostel' ? I didnt say the gti or ed30 were lesser models, they are not, they all offer something different. The GT is a lesser model and the car under that is its lesser model.

I also didnt do it over and over again, i dont know anything about lesser models (they dont interest me) the only negative was 'i would rather walk'.

I and other r32 (and S3) owners get on fine with GTI and Ed30 owners on both this forum and the golfgtiforum, seems to be just you with the problem mate which is a shame.

Hi

Quote
You seem to have a big issue with R32 owners,

I have no issue with .:R32 owners. I love the .:R. I do have an issue (something esp noticeable here in SA) with the attitude that most (Not all) .:R owners seem to have. Personally I dont care what a person drives. You shouldnt be calling other vehicles and therefore inadvertantly their owners lesser than you. And nothing bad happened to me in hostel. I was merely stating that your choice of portraying your opinion was done in what seemed to be the manner of a 16 year old waving his willy.

On this point we disagree. My mum wanted a R32. But because it only comes in 3 door here she had to take the GTI. Are you trying to say she "downgraded"? I dont think so. As I stated. Both cars were designed by the same people, in the same building and built on the same plant. Both vehicles have the same safety standards, quality standards and both are built on the exact same platform. Its comparing apples to apples imho.

I also didnt do it over and over again, i dont know anything about lesser models (they dont interest me) the only negative was 'i would rather walk'.

When I paid for marketing rights on a detailing forum all I could do was go on about my own detailing range cos I felt it was the best... I didnt realise it until someone showed me. I argued blue murder that I had only done it once. But I hadnt and neither have you. Look at any post on golfgtiforum.co.uk where anyone has so much as critiqued or challenged an .:R and there will be a post on there from you which is usually written in a very challenging and sometimes rude manner. Please dont make me waste my time digging them out. Your lack of interest in other models also in my understanding states clearly that you dont respect the other models in the range. Thats your personal choice of course. But you also need to realise that if thats your attitude then you should expect that you will upset members like myself.

I agree on some levels. I also get along perfectly with all owners on any forum with any vehicle. Im lucky as I dont personally own a Golf myself. This means I dont feel biased towards any particular model as I have never owned, driven or compared any of the Golf models.

In a sense the point Im trying to make is that its not fair to automatically assume (Unless you have proof from VW that it is) their flagship car and to assume and pronounce that all Golfs that are not .:R's are lesser.

Sorry Uncle T.

But this is something that I feel strongly about and I feel that this discussion should be had and can be controlled by the Moderators if it was to get out of hand (Which it wont). This is a case where sometimes going against yourself is needed.

VW do see it as the flagship. Any car companies top (i.e. most expensive and luxurious model) is their flagship

Audi - R8
BMW -M3
Porsche - 911

etc etc

I defend my car when it is put down unjustly, i dont put down other peoples cars, feel free to dig them up. This is to do with this example (within the two threads) and my apology was directed at him (so i did it once)

Appreciate the time you took for the reply  :happy2:

Its good to have a decent discussion that doesn't involve calling the police. lol

Quick question. What's ur opinion on Haldex?

....

I'd just like to add that there are many GTI/Ed30 owners who have every respect for other Golf owners whether they are GT's or R32's or even TDI's.

I occasionally frequent the R32OC forum and find as a GTI owner that everyone is very friendly indeed. Any banter is just that - Friendly banter and not serious.

Being boys we are ALL inclined to wave our willies about occasionally.

Really like it! It allows it to be FWD on the motorway so little power is lost and throws it to the back from standstill. A race controller allows a 70/30 split to the rear iirc on the mk5
Its flawless in the wet, i still have not gotten the TC light to come on!

Can be a tad slow to distribute the power on a fast corner but not too bad in all.

Im liking the idea of the RS3 - 355 bhp 4wd hatch should be brilliant!

Hi John :happy2:

Car is going well again mate I have just had some uprated valves fitted, cam chains done and some different pistons fitted!
The JE ones I had in slapped like a bitch when cold and I hated it but new ones seem spot on.
Also had a new clutch fitted but it's crap(southbend stage5,now pulled from sale due to lot of problems) so looking into something different.

Hows your motor doing? Any new mods?
You doing Inters this year? :driver:
