This afternoon i finally got round to replacing the fuel filter in the Jetta and man what a difference. After checking the service history it would seem the filter was last changed at 40k miles which was 80k miles/3 years ago. I had to drain the contents of the filter housing. It was not a pretty sight!
Since replacing the filter the idle has been significantly more stable and the car seems much more responsive and dare i say a tad faster.
-
I noticed this when I had it done at my 4th year service. The car felt much, much faster.
-
The difference is ridiculous to the point where i actually enjoyed driving it earlier.
In the last 10 days the car has had
- New front discs (Pagid)
- Brake fluid change (Peter Cooper Southampton)
- Aircon regas (Peter Cooper Southampton)
- full service
And Friday it is going in for a new DMF and clutch.
Damn thing is more expensive than my camera addiction!
-
I plan to get a regas this year.
-
Think for the cost of them Im going to start doing mine every 10k now, Im pretty ocd though

No sh*t sherlock
Might get mine domes next time I'm up in donny.

Peter Cooper VW have a package deal at the moment of £110 for a brake fluid change and zircon regas which i thought was a pretty good deal, ok i could have found it cheaper elsewhere but the last time i had my brake fluid changed by an indie they fooked the slave cylinder!

Changed my fuel filter this evening, with a oem Bosch one. took about 15 minutes all up, most of the time was jacking the car up and making sure it was safe.
Car is running so much smoother, engine note is distinctly different from both inside and outside, idle feels smoother overall. Did a short drive, all felt very good overall. :happy2: Got one of my weekly trips to our bristol office later in the week so will check to see if there is any improvement in mpg etc as well.
found a couple of useful guides here

My ED30 is in VW for service tomorrow, Cambelt/Waterpump, Aircon re-gas and brake fluid change, all in for £500 (after a little negotiating) :happy2:

Thanks for starting this thread! I completely forgot about my fuel filter, I was going to replace a while ago but then git a new engine and didn't think to check. No record of a change in 3 years/60000 miles so probably due a new one!
Are euro car parts ok for this sort if thing or should I go to vw?
-
My GTI is in for major service tomorrow,
How much would vw add to the cost if i asked them to do the fuel filter at the same time?
-
I've been told that tfsi's don;t need fuel filters changed... will be doing my one soon with a new fuel pump cam follower too...

The one i bought from ECP was a Bosch one, good enough for me. they have a stamp on them should be 6.4bar for the 2.0 Tfsi
-
I've got the 1.4tsi mkv, they tried to give me the filter for a 1.6/2.0 fsiso decided ill go to vw just in case.
-
tbh i changed mine didnt notice a difference
-
Just dropped my car off at vw for tomorrows service,
I asked about the fuel filter replacement and the bloke said we don't bother asking the customer about this and no one has ever asked him about it before,
He said he'll talk to a techie about it and get back to me.

Neither did I on a petrol @100k but I would imagine it would make a big difference on the diesels

....Yet again this illustrates the very differing standards which VW dealers operate to. When I arrive at my VW dealer's they make sure someone who knows his stuff is on hand and will bring out the head techie if they can't answer the question with certainty. Perhaps this is because once upon a time I really verbally let go at a salesman who blatently lied to me and I was very loud and very public!
Forum member Shabba168 (who originally PDI's my car in 2005) used to be a techie and was later moved to their front service desk - A very good idea. But I don't think he enjoyed wearing a shirt and tie and now is with vanworx.
Fuel filters filter dirt etc and as such, they should be changed! - You don't have to be a brain surgeon to realise that!

Just checked my service book and fuel filter box is NOT ticked when it had its major service in january.
-
Just checked the vw website for whats included in major service and saw this.
•Spark plugs (petrol engine) or fuel filter (diesel engine)

.
Well, whatever VW officially say, it can only be a good idea to change the fuel filter at some stage as mileage increases. The reality is that they filter dirt out and any filter needs cleaning or replacing. They're not expensive.
-
Dont understand why anyone would argue NOT to do it at 10k or major intervals for the sake of a tenner.

Might get Jabbasport to do it at same time as everything else they are going to be doing in 2 weeks)

Quite right.
Whatever the vw techie says to me tomorrow, I'll insist on a replacement filter.

How much dirt is in fuel?

How much dirt is in fuel?
....Depends which supermarket pump you fill up from. 'Dirt' is a generic term in this context, meaning anything which shouldn't be there.

Awww I'll be ok then as I only use v-power lol
So it is possibly worth doing then...
-
^^^^
I exclusively use V-Power too. I'm no expert on this and I don't know the science of what substances might get picked up from petrol storage tanks etc, but I reckon that a filter has been included by car manufacturers to filter any 'dirt' (foreign bodies etc etc) and so a certain amount of 'dirt' is expected.
-
Until I had the fuel filter changed, I used initially either Tesco's 99-ron or V-power. When I had the filter changed, the car ran much better - it was less sluggish. I'd still change it despite whatever fuel you use.

It's not the fuel but the tanks it's stored in. When you think how old some filling stations are the tanks have been in the ground along time. Having done developments on old filling stations and seen the tanks taken out of the ground and looked at the crap in them there is a definite need for a filter and changing of it.
Why would VW make it so accessible if it doesn't need changing for ages. Now i've done it once i think the next one would take less than 10 minutes. as i said biggest part of the job is jacking up the car.

Interesting. My mate who's a mechanic for VW was told on a course the filters are lifetime and don't need changing. Mine has 116k and no problems.
-
Have an ED30, what's the Fuel Filter Part No. Peeps?
:happy2:

....Certainly interesting but I wonder if this also applies to earlier cars on the 2.0T FSI platform.

Changed the fuel filter on my 1.4 tsi on Saturday, easy enough to do once I'd got the right part. Noticed a definite improvement on idle, quicker startup and smoothness. Wouldn't say its quicker but definitely smoother. Mine had done 60k with no record of a change before. Always use v power (but only got the car at 54k) not noticed any mpg benefit but happy with the new smoothness :) if its not been changed before and you're at 60k+ you havnt got much to lose as its pretty cheap and easy to do :)

I have a spare in the shed? Brand new. Thought it had gone missing in the post, ordered a new one and then it turned up lol
