Sadly I won't be in the GTI club for some time. In the mean while what, if any changes could I make to my 1.6 FSI to get more performance out of it? I want to up the BHP as much as I can. I'm talking new exhaust, ECU changes, filters etc.

There isn't a lot you can do.
You might be able to get a few extra horses out of it but nothing that will make a difference.
The best thing you can do is put the money towards the Gti

how is the 1.6 on fuel btw?

Had a feeling this would be the case

Yeah very good. Not sure what I'm averaging to the gallon but fuel costs are minimal.

my 1.6 non FSI auto gave me up to 440mi per tank. the FSI is much better than that
to answer OP's question i had a 1.6 before i got my 2.0T. honestly i wouldn't bother. save your money for the car you really want. that's what i did and i don't regret it one bit.

haha funny thing is.. I was asking because I also had a 1.6 mk4 auto.. I loved the car to bits! but I was putting 10 pound fuel everyday! lol

same engine, different gearbox (i believe). mine was a 6 speed tiptronic. the 6th speed might have made the difference, along with (potentially) a more modern gearbox
