Title: Where to find OEM head unit security code
Post by: Tfsi_Mike on March 19, 2012, 08:24:29 am

Where would I find the head unit security code?  Would I have to plug it back into my car and vcds or can I ring the dealer and give them my vin number and they will supply it?

Thanks in advance

Provided you only use that head unit with your car you shouldn't need it. Otherwise dealer should be able to get it with proof of ownership. Or someone on hear with the correct tool can reset it for you.

£35 if I refit stereo myself and book it into service where it's connected to a system at seat and a code is sent online

What equipment would be able to reset the code, do you know Ian?

Sorry mate I'm thinking of the VIM cable that can also reset security codes on RNS510's.  :ashamed:

not sure if its the same but i know you normally just refit the stereo back into the car and it looks at the ecu code i believe and just works if they all match (i.e they came out of the same car) I know i did the wifes altea and my leon which was disconnected for several months and a aftermaket stereo fitted and they all worked when i put them back in. have even disconnected the battery with no problems.

So Seat want to charge you £35 for the code to your original head unit that came with your car?   :fighting:
You would have thought that the dealer would be obliged to give you the info. It's your property and your info.

Surely it can be seen with VCDS like you say?

it should just work then if the stereo came out of the same car just plug it in and see you should not need vcds

Just had another thought if its not in the handbook for the stereo it might be on the plastic tag which came with the car with the key numbers on it

You can't retrieve the Security code with VCDS.

When the unit is put in the car and the code first entered it is stored in the ECU. If for any reason you remove the stereo or battery for any great length of time (more than 2hrs iirc) when the battery etc is plugged back in the ECU sends the code to the unit to unlock it.

If you put it in another car it will not work and ask for the code.

You have 2 choices:

 - Take car to a dealer and retrieve the code with proof of ownership
 - As Ian says find someone with RNS Manager cable (Only 2 i know are VRStu and Eddie_NL) and they can reset the code for you.

Just take it to a dealer. Make sure you get there before 1500 as they have to go online to VAG HQ in the fatherland to get it.

It took them about an hour to retrieve mine for the OEM stereo in my new car as i asked for it for when i took delivery.

As a new order. If I say I requested it and now I've come to need it, it's not there they may provide it FOC?

Pre Delivery Inspection.

It's an inspection they have to carry out on all new cars before you collect them. Most of the time involves a tech sitting on his arse just ticking yes

Mike is your head unit an RNS?

I thought the cable Stu and Eddie have will only reset RNS510's.
