Hi everyone
can anyone give me some info on this Cam follower problem that could arise, and roughly what needs to be done and how much, my Gti has 85,000 miles on it although running great at the mo...
Cheers Dean

with 85k on the clock I would definatly replace it
with mileage the cam follower wears and if its worn alot it can break and cause havoc on other components like camshaft and fuel pump resulting in loads of money
cam follower costs £30 and seal costs £10 from your local stealer
sometimes there is no symptoms and it could be very worn
if there is it's usually fuel cuts and you might also throw a CEL

What is VW's service recommendation on this? Is it supposed to be replaced.
-
Is it hard to replace then ??
thanks
-
it's not hard.. but just don't rush the job
you need to take the engine cover off
take fuse 27 out blue 15 amp until car cuts off
take high pressure fuel pump off
replace camfollower and refit..
its much more than that but thats just the basics of what you do

A QUALITY DIY that I intend to use to do mine

Have a search on here bud. There's a good guide on here somewhere on how to check/replace it.

I was going to do a guide but I hvn't had time to do a write up
-
Thanks everyone
is there anything else i should change as a precaution by the way.. :scared:
-
the dealer told me to change the O ring seal on the HPFP but I don't think you really have to do it unless it's in a state
-
Yeah i have ordered the seal as well. What i meant was these valves that sometimes wear is it DV or something and is there any other components i should replace with it having 85000 miles on it ,just want to get this car back shipshape..

If you want to go all out then Change your spark plugs, Diverter valve for a revision D, oil, oil filter, coolant, brake and clutch fluid. Essentially a major service if you have the time and money and want to do it all yourself. Although most of that depends on when you last did it.

Ok Bud :happy2:

Deano,
I had a major service last month, and with a similar mileage to yours I got it changed. I had an oil change, engine flush, new filters, full inspection and fitting of a new cam follower and seal for 220 quid from my specialist Duncans in Byfleet, Surrey. They gave me the old one, and said the top was quite a bit thinner than that of the replacement, so it was a really good decision to get it done.
Worth doing for peace of mind :happy2:
