EVVO, I am fitting et35 19" 8.5 and its gonna be tighter than a ........... so so et22 in my book would be a nightmare.
You would need arches like "X5PEA" has got on his mk5

Also depends on the rim width (7½", 8", 8½" etc.)

I have 18" x 8" Rims on mine with an ET of 42, and they are pretty much flush with the inside edges of the wheelarch.

I've got 8x18 ET44 and it catches on the front occasionally on speed humps, sits very flush to the arches.

^ Ditto, mine are the same size and I wouldn't want them any further out.

my wheels are 18x8 ET40 and im sitting flush as well.

if you plan to go a lot lower than the lowest offset i would get would be about 45

i regret in someways getting wheels with such a low offset as i want to go lower but i may have problems as i have posted about today. :happy2:

Remember that the lower the offset, the lower the number, the further the wheels will sit out. So if you wanted the offset lower than 40 you will be looking at 35.  Ive got 18x8 ET45 on the front and i woulddnt go much further than that, as TC says ET42 on an 8" is plenty for the front.  probably be OK with 35 on the rear though......j-u-s-t  :happy2:

From my experience with 19" MK5 alloys, if you don't want to push the limits of fit, I would say ET45 to ET 50 on the front and ET40 to ET50 on the back.

So do you recon I'd get away with ET35 on a set of 19"x9"? or would that be to much poke bearing in mind i could go treched tyres to pull the tread back under?

Still no   That is a couple of mil short of 2 inches further out than a Monza II.

You could weld a little bar to the wing and have it as a hamster treadmill.
