Title: Car feels a little under the weather - Update: EGR problem
Post by: daboy3000 on March 30, 2012, 10:54:28 am
Hard to describe and I still seem to have plenty of power but at around 2000rpm it seems to be holding back a little.  Could just be bad fuel but with all the nonsense going on I can't even fill up.  Going to try a fuel cleaner and have also noticed that there is a small amount of oil around the bottom of the EGR.

Any ideas what else it could be?

You could try giving the valve a quick clean?

PCV valve issue?

Just went down the road to buy some injector cleaner and to try and get some fuel (failed) and my emission warning light came on.

What does that normally mean?

your emission warning light came on? that means your exhaust gases are exceeding the set level of gases (someone correct me if im wrong) such as c02 and petrol (mainly c02 i would think) don't you have that carbon deposit catch thing found on the new diesels? if so could be from where that isn't cleared out. I would try and go get some fuel and give it a blast to clear out the system - the technical name will come to me later or someone on here will say it

Don't spose you'd do a DIY on the injector cleaning would you? I've been meaning to do mine for a while  :innocent:

I wouldn't know where to start with cleaning the injectors.  I think the carbon thing is only on 170bhp GT's

I noticed the original issue shortly after I put some fuel in it.  I'm hoping that if I put some injector cleaner in the fuel tank and get some fresh fuel and clean out the EGR then everything will be ok, just need to find some fuel.

Shame it didn't happen before you scanned it!! Typical!!

Hmm, give that a go then - you could of got some contaminated fuel from the garage. try both of those suggestions and I can always rescan your car at some point. Your near Croydon aren't you?

I work in Croydon yeah, cheers.  Any idea how to remove the EGR, I can't find a guide on here anywhere, is it that simple that you don't need a guide?

I was think iffy fuel too, but with my luck it won't be that simple.

:signLOL: it looks like a day job atleast you don't need any special tools. oh alright then well if you need anything doing with vagcom let me know and we can always sort something out. Might be worth doing the PCV valve check just to make sure its not that

Took the egr valve off today, it wasn't the bad so not causing my issue, full tank of fuel when in too with a bottle of injector cleaner.  I gave the car a good thrash once it was warm but it still feels wrong and the light is still on.  :sad1:

You need to scan it for the fault code. That will tell you exactly what is wrong with it.

I think your cars got the diesel particle filter u need to take the car on a long run to try and get it to regen it if that doesn't work it's needs a forced regen using vcds and if all fails then u need a new dpf as its part of the new mot regulations u carnt delete it they cost from dealer £1000+  :rolleye:

I live 30 miles from work so its had lots of long runs, also my car doesn't have a dpf but thanks for the advice.

Looks like I was half right.  My mechanic thinks the EGR is faulty, this causes more engine breaking or something like that and the car certainly felt like it was doing that.  Also had a blown fuse for one of the fans and a couple of other little bits.

I thought about the delete kit but its not this part of the EGR thats faulty so that won't help, looking at a few hundred to replace it, combined with two new wheel bearings, a few other bits and my insurance renewal this month is going to be expensive, I will be lucky to get change out of £1300.

:sad1: sorry to hear that! but atleast when its all.sorted your car will feel.even better and the map even happier everything is working a.o.k! check out elephant on your renewal! mine is stupid cheap, i even sent mvb a picture of my insurance form with the total and he was impressed (correct me if im wrong marvin?)

is it not something you could buy of the bay and change yourself? or atleast provide the parts and save a little money?

Car is back, EGR valve replaced.  Not had a chance to really give it a good run and i have also been driving a really slow people carrier all week so hard to tell if all the power is back but it feels ok.

Had the fronts wheel bearings and the ball joints done so it feels a lot tighter upfront now too.

The bill was just short of £800 but with only £130 labour he really done me a favour.

Yeah, he's a diamond. If you ever need a trust worthy mechanic he's in Penge, I have used him for 18 years.
