Bit of a long story but my mate popped round this evening with his new wheels.
Absolutely stunning following it's new car prep at Valet Magic. iPhone pics but you get the idea.

All the toys bar a sunroof. He let me drive but with only 44 miles on the clock I took it steady. Love it. :ashamed:
-
Im trying to convince my old man to get one of these :happy2:
-
Yep, that is perfect. You can keep your S3 or your RS3.
-
Tis rather tasty :happy2:
-
Worth 30 grand though?
-

Octavia gone in a fortnight :signLOL:
-
That blue is amazing. Manual 3 dr in that colour with sunroof would be my dream Golf.
What is that blue called?
-
Octavia gone in a fortnight :signLOL:
x2 I'd put my money on that too. :popcornsoda:
-
Hedge....... *whisper*...... DO IT!

'Rising Blue', methinks

.
There's a blue Golf R like that local to me. I came across him in a 30mph zone on some B-road twisties a couple of days ago and as anticipated, exactly as I do myself, he booted it only when his shoulders were level with the actual NTL sign (aka GLF sign = Go Like Feck!). So I knew we were onto a very fast but sensible drive. I kept my braking distances but try as he may, he could not lose me. I'm sure that had I been in front I wouldn't have been able to lose him either. My Quaife got plenty of exercise and we both enjoyed a very spirited drive. I expect that one or two folks we overtook wondered what was going down! But again, he took no risks and neither was I going to. My daughter was in my passenger seat and I'm glad to say she was very cool and simply commented quietly that it was fast. He had a blonde beside him too.
I really like the Golf R and especially that blue.
Don't you miss the V6 sound though, Ian?
-
Robin... the only situation where the golf R would have legs on you is from a standing start. With all your mods on the twisties it wouldn't stand a chance.
-
love that colour r with the black 19" alloys
-
...its on my to do list
-
...its on my to do list
....In Cherry White?

...chocolate brown R8 is first though
-
Looks gay as hell to me.
Only jokin, its  . Would love one :signLOL:
-
If we are going chocolate brown, then it has to be a 991 in mocha....
Or a Carrera GT in GT silver with Mocha interior...

Sorry folks Octy is staying. The list price for that particular car is around £42k it has all the toys, RNS, Dynaudio, ACC, Camera, everything except a sunroof.
Would I have one. Oh yes but my numbers would need to come up first.

:happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
-
I'd have a Golf R over a Datsun.
-
It is a tough call but if you're in the market for the ultimate 5-door Golf then it has to be an .:R with 5-doors.
-
That is a very very nice car indeed :notworthy:
-
It's a nice car, granted. But if I had 42 grand to buy a car...
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.images.pistonheads.com%2Faimg%2F3431%2F3431139-1.jpg&hash=253fe0322201b2c5a1eac6073b4cf3c67a029951)
And 20 thousand pounds left over!
-
great cars and rising blue would be my colour of choice, way more connected than a S3 having taken one out from a dealer a while back, mrs w was looking at a steel grey one with black alloys today and has decided to wait for a mk7
-

-
Id take the datsun I'm afraid. It would make the golf R look like a toy in a race
-
It's a nice car, granted. But if I had 42 grand to buy a car...
You assume he paid all of that for it.

Unfortunately I'm at an age where versatility is sexy.

His circumstances were quite exceptional and some.
-
They'd have to be mate. Cracking car, but 42 grand :signLOL:
-
I'd have a Golf R over a Datsun.
+1.
I wouldn't spend 42k on one though. Seen them for 23K used though. That's a cracking deal.
-
why is it the moment a golf R gets mentioned the price tag arguement gets dusted off :sleepy:
-
Exactly VC. My mate came round today and irrespective of whether it was a Golf or something else it was a special event. :happy2:
-
Clearly lots of people think it is relevant. I don't personally.
-
why is it the moment a golf R gets mentioned the price tag arguement gets dusted off :sleepy:
Er because it's massively overpriced? 42 grand is just insane for a Golf.
-
You should have seen the faces on the local chav fest bolting the worlds biggest sub into the back of a Saxo round the corner. :signLOL:

Superb car in it's own right - however it's no C5 RS6 and I know from other threads Hedge that's where your 'love' actually lies

Maybe next week when it's 15 grand cheaper :happy2:

knowing your fiends story Hedge i am glad it came good fella, i think people need to realise its no longer 2006/2007 so things have moved on

Busted, but this would be a close second. Bollocks. If the numbers come up I'd have both. :signLOL:

Thanks mate. :happy2:
-
Very very nice! :happy2:
yes its expensive... but then so are most new cars! Its priced competatively for the market, and thats why they seem to sell well :drinking:
-
Irrespective of price. It is a very nice car and knowing the story behind it I bet he is chuffed to fcuk. I'd be like a cat that got the cream and the local alleyway full of pussy if that was me.
As the saying goes. You pays your money and you makes your choices.
If he ever needs it looking after Ian tell him I will :happy2:

When was the last time you bought a new Golf? A pretty basic one is at least £20k, and a decently specced GTD is north of £32k...

I know, it's crazy. £10,000 more for a decently specced R over the GTD. Madness.

Price has got nothing to do with it, Nickyboy - Nobody is asking you to part with your money! We're discussing and enjoying a very good car - The Golf R. You've illustrated very well what your own taste is in cars - Have you driven or even been driven in either the Evo X or Nissan? There's more to it than just speed and value for money. "Madness" for you to spend your money on a Golf R but not for others who have the funds available.

I'm sure it's a fantastic car. Build quality throughout will be exceptional. I just wouldn't spend 42 grand on one, when that budget opens up a whole new league of options, outside of the family hatchback range.

Unless of course what your after is a Family Hatchback in which case the Golf R ticks pretty much all the boxes.
It is only beaten by a Czech Dream Machine Estate

Irrelevant.
Le Buyer...... has 40k in his pocket.... wants a golf.... buys a Golf R.
I don't see a problem... :stupid:

I must admit the boot is tiny. Same as the .:R32.

It's still a Golf! 42 grand for a Golf is unbelievable. I think the majority of motorists would agree with that. If you can afford it and happy to pay that then hey who cares what anyone else thinks. Enjoy :happy2:

:signLOL: Albeit the Veyron being VAG, a few parts aren't interchangeable with a Golf
-
I said I wouldn't pay 42 grand for one, not because I think it's poor value against the competition,(and there isn't much, let's be honest) but because the same car is now available with it's worst depreciation hit already done, and as such an 18 month old R would be an amazing buy.
If you're in the market for a 40k new car, and you want a performance hatch, there's nothing to touch it really. Can't imagine how much an RS3 would be once you've got all the toys on it!
-
Can't imagine how much an RS3 would be once you've got all the toys on it!
....Over £50k for the spec I would have.
There's only two questions to be asked when buying a car:
1) - Is it the car I desire? And it doesn't matter how rational or irrational the factors are.
2) - Can I afford to buy and run it?
It's just like falling in love - Do/did you apply a check list? - I hope not!
-
Beautiful car, exactly how I would have spec'd it. The only thing I find myself not liking now is the DRL's on the lower grills, I much prefer them on the mk6 GTI xenons. But that wouldn't put me off getting one.
Only thing that might now (after seeing it this morning) is the RS3 sedan if they ever release it here

That is the dogs - love the R in that colour, understated quality compared to the jap stuff. Spend your money on what brings you pleasure rather than what other people think you should and enjoy. Hope they make the polol r!
-

Im with you Ian on this. Ive never really been a fan of the Golf, and ever since the R models cam eout i was always a big 'id only get the Rocco R', but after driving the Golf R, i was 100% converted. Even the wife was impressed.
dodgy vinyl job on the one i had though

I'd take an 18 month old R for 25K, and spend the balance on getting my Mk5 stripped out, roll-caged, K04 Stage 3 converted and turned into a track day weapon!
Come on the lottery numbers!
-
Really want an R as my next car, altho I do think that the Deep Blue Pearl looks a lot nicer in the flesh, then Rising Blue.
-
.
Just a nice pic to show off the colour even when dirty:

^ This was the car I had a friendly fast 'convoy' with the other day.
-
Awesome car in the right colour imo :happy2:
Currently the only car out there that i lust after as a real world replacement to my ed30
-
I'm on the fence here. Love the car, but agree that the price is a bit mental. I'd definitely buy used and let someone dafter take the big depreciation hit. I'll take a boggo cloth* seated manual, please.
*no longer available I see
-
^ MK6 cloth GTI interior from eBay it would have to be Si
I don't like leather either, just a preference on all my cars. Half leather would be tollerable in an R/S3 etc...
-
.
Then it would have to be Recaros in alacantara.
-
Cloth was available, Pete, but they've made leather pews standard now.
-
.
Me no likey leather pews :sad1:
However, I'm not in the fortunate position of being able to buy one whether new or previously loved. Besides, I'm still just as much in love with my GTI as the first day - Actually more so due to the mods. 100k mile service next week.
-
Me no likey either. Creaky, squeaky, slidey, hot in summer, cold in winter the list goes on. I have leather in mine, but it was quite a rarity to find cloth seats in R32s when I was shopping.
-
Absolutely stunning car , best colour for one as well , I would love one , maybe in a few years! (ie when they are knackered)
-
I read on here that these will be 15K in a years time. Hard to see given the mk6 current values. Time will tell. They look stunning, incredibly rare though havent seen many and ive been looking. Love it in blue cracking motor. Silver would be my second colour.
Give me one in three door with reacaros and im sold!
Just need values to drop to 15K for a decenct example.
There should be ample scope for tuning on these as well? Whats the mpg on these?

Man I hope your right I would really love to have a Mk6 R !
-

I'll take two in that case.
You'll be looking at more like 40% after three years which is still more than £15k
-
One for me? :rolleye:
-
I reckon they will be around £15K as a 5 year old car , from VW with a warranty.

Well put sir. :congrats:
Points 1 to 2 are how I imagine most folk buy a car I hope. Is the Golf R worth 40k or the S3 worth 50k, well yes.
I desire both but as I can't afford either I have an ED30 and am more than happy. It's not to say that there is not a "charge" for desireability/exclusivity that has been placed on such vehicles. If these cars were all 20k we would all have them, they would be common as muck and we would be right back here discussing other "overpriced" cars. Any material possession is only worth what peolpe are willing to pay. My wife will save up and spend £600 on a Mullberry handbag, now THAT really is bonkers!
:happy2:
-
My next car will either be an R or Ed35. Hopefully an R, however the Mrs still really wants a Rocco R.
-

....A Mrs who desires such a car (though I don't like the Rocco's styling) is very desirable herself!
-
I adore the golf r, but for me 40k is a huge hit for a car ,especially for a normal working class person. I have never been in a position to buy a brand new car. Tbh the most i have ever spent on a car is £16 which was a mk4 gttdi 130 with loads of extras. Had it 3 months as it bored me to death. Tbh the mk5 is probably the best and most solid car for the money i have driven and the longest i have owned a car, 18months, Would i buy another mk5 , hell yeah, tbh i wouldn't buy any other mk6 as they just dont appeal to me. But the r is another story. it just seems to be styled perfectly.
