Title: RNS 510 question. Updated Question!!!!
Post by: Phil Mcavity on May 09, 2009, 10:00:30 am
Im guessing i know the Answer to this one..

Ive just bought and fitted one this sat Nav to the car. My multi funtion steering wheel controls are not working in conjuntion with the Nav. Is it a setting in the RNS510 , or find someone with Vag com to re-instate Nav with wheel. Its just the voloume control and track up/down. the rest of the wheel controls all operate.#

VRStu is normally the person who is closest but hes away, anyone else near southampton with VCDS (Hedge) Ian if you read this, can i contact you?

Cheers guys

Same thing has happened to me!

I have the old MFSW without the star button. The newer MFSW with the star button works straight away, but on the older MFSW the track+/track-/source buttons don't work on the wheel. Instead the track+/track- functionality is on the MFD (highline computer) control stalk buttons. A bit annoying but I've not had time to sit down and look at it.

it all depends how it was set up previously

just an update, ran my car down to the dealers for them to "quickly" plug Vag com in to see whats wrong.
They have drawn a blank so far as to why its not working. Theyve changed the settings so that the car thinks its an 08 model,as when they then fitted the RNS510 as an option, but for some reason it wont find the mfsw as being connected to it, although everything else works ie bluetooth kit, but volume/track up/down, Telephone/star buttons again no longer work.

They said it could be a loose cable at the back of the sat nav???, but its the huge loom which cant be loose as its a click in type?? and as ive said everything else works??.
Have a missed a wire off the back of the unit?

Is there such thing as an update of drivers for the RNS510?.
ive drawn abit of a blank on this. Anyone any ideas?.
Dealership want to pull the sat nav back out and check behind it?? not sure this will resolve anything.
My MFD2 worked perfectly with these buttons so surely cant be wiring fault imo??
cheers guys

Oh, and when i was there the new Mark 6 GTi was being put in the showroom. Candy white, 5 door manual, and my opinion was of more disapointment . Not as good as i thought tbh, but thats another story.Liked the new rear diffuser and pipes. Test drive on the 19th already arranged
Cant drive it any earlier as VW UK have said no test drives till official uk launch on the 19th.

^ you can update the firmware on the unit, do you know what version its running ?, not that i think this is the issue, do you think the dealers knew what they were doing ?

I had the same problem on my unit which replaced the bog-standard RCD300. I took it back to the guys that supplied it straight away and with a bit of tweaking on Vag-Com they managed to sort it.

They're based up in Leicester so not local to you, but I can PM their details as they may be able to give you some info over the phone??

update, Hedge (Ian)  :drinking: has been here for best part of a couple of hours here trying to solve this.

He seems to think that the steering wheel controllers were superseded on the later 08 model cars and that mine being a early ed30 is different (56) , Although mine has MFD2  as the RNS510 wasnt out and the wheel has been updated since to suit. ( part numbers are different from his car to mine.)
Cars is still in to VW dealers tommorow whilst they give me a Golf + to try out , to try and solve this problem. Tis abit of a head scrather.

The problem is the steering controller module was updated when the RNS510 came out.Pre 08 cars wernt fitted with that correct module.

Been to dealers this morning and they are in full agreement and part is being sent for. When its in, ill take Phylis back to get it fixed :happy2:

im just hoping vw take this into consideration and get the right steering wheel controller to do rns buttons and cruise.

it has been known for cruise to stop working after a new steering wheel controller is fitted (for the purposes of MFSW buttons)

id make vw say "yes it will work with your cruise control" so if it doesnt you can hold it against them and get them to sort it! ;)

i have given them the CORRECT part number Jay, as Hedge (ian) was round my house last night and he found the differences between the two model year cars. (08) v (56) .So yes that shouldnt happen. As long as they sort My Nav buttons, cruise, Bluetooth phone/DSG paddles, ill be happy. :happy2:

Good chance it'll be put less then that. Module is reletively cheap, and to remove wheel and replace would take an hour approx.
Might get the part under warranty?? not sure.
Underlying fact is if it costs that then thats ok. The Nav cost me £480. My old MFD2 will fetch close to £300, so to get an RNS510 installed for total costs around £300, i cant argue

There is no star and volume for stereo is on the other side.

The old MFSW did not have the star button, and the buttons physically were covered in a plastic thing; that is, they were not discrete from the plastic around them. The newer type has the star button but the old covering. The newest version is IIRC electrically identical to the star type but using cheaper-to-manufacture discrete buttons.

The old MFSW also had the highline computer controls on the wiper stalk, an up/down/select button. The newer MFSW has these functions integrated into the steering wheel buttons themselves (a placement I find unsatisfactory, I like to change my track without having to see what the next track is). The problems with the RNS are with the older type MFSW.

and the later as well!!, mines the later and have the RNS fitted!.If you have from 56 to 57 reg's and have MFSW, you'll need the steering control module changing.

I have the AL steering control module with the newer type buttons. I had to take my mfd2 out the other day for repair so turned all the coding off for nav and radio on vcds,
One of my mates is a VW/Audi technician and has a few of these rns-510's laying about so we tried one which was a 2008 build and with out any coding or any thing the rns-510 worked with my steering buttons.  I will be purchasing one of these once I've got the money together.

Phil if you need my mates number to have a word with just send me a pm and ill pass it on,  He actually does all the auto electrical stuff for audi in leeds,  so he knows his stuff if he doesn't know then maybe Ray user name (aRd) over on www.uk-mkiv.net (http://www.uk-mkiv.net)

Did you get your MFSW buttons to work ok in the end? Was it the CANBUS?

My MFSW buttons worked with my RCD300 to change track but when I fitted a RCD510 that stopped working. Volume/mute/menu buttons are ok. Just track selection from the RH buttons...
