Title: Ed35 - Polo Blue GT - 7R (R & R)
Post by: wigit on March 30, 2012, 09:25:25 pm
well the scirocco went to its new owner last weekend so finally picked up the Edition 35 today (given it had been at the dealers for a month) so it can join the Pirelli

spec is as follows:

3 door manual in carbon grey metallic with steel finish watkins glen alloys with the following options (no ACC box ticked as never rated it):

RCD510
Dynaudio
Storage pack
Luxury pack
Parking sensors
Flat tyre indicator
Cruise control

first modifications added after an hour in the form of a 35 badges for the boot and interior:

have to say i really like it, the alloys work better from some angles but i'm not a fan of the 19's, engine wise its got a distinctly more meaty exhaust and indiction tone than the Pirelli, would have loved the Euro spec seats but last couple of cars have had leather so i'm sure i will get over it

Looks pretty good, what's the engine like compared to the normal MK6 GTI?

The MK6's are gradually growing on me, but those alloys are just awful, Even wolfrace would be better imo!  :happy2:

always loved the mk6 in carbon grey so was an easy colour choice, friend of mine is building a mk1 cab in same colour so i am looking forward to a photoshoot

second choice was red

Very nice mate.  :happy2:

Lovely car Andy. great colour too.

Lovely car Andy. great colour too.

cheers fellas have to admit colour is why i prob think the VRS looks good in the grey metallic, nice and understated  :happy2:

What a cracking car, Love the 35 decals. As standard, are they only on the wings and inner door surrounds?

correct 35 badges on the wings and door sills, i purchased a couple of oem wing badges for the dash and boot which are an outrageous £29 from the stealer

Loving it Andy.  :happy2: Congratulations, looks very grown up and classy.  :drinking:

i wanted something a bit more understated and that attracted slightly less attention than the rocco, grown up and classy is how i'd sum up the mk6 over the mk5 same dna through the wheel but feels a bit more refined

Gives me wood, plain and simple  :happy2:

take it easy Beddie you may need the cuprinol  :ashamed:

I see what you mean about the rims. I wonder if they'd be better off in a darker finish.

Love the car otherwise and congrats on the purchase. Any shots of the interior?

stealth they are noticeably darker than the Pirelli, i think if too dark the'd lose definition

Why was it at the dealer for a month, Andy?

Also, I concur with the above...more interior pics!!

Chris it arrived early at the dealers which caught me out, was meant to be build week 5 and was build week 3, i'd always banked on end of march pick up, in reality i wanted to shift the rocco first  :happy2:

The MK6's are gradually growing on me, but those alloys are just awful, Even wolfrace would be better imo!  :happy2:

engine wise Al its essentially the Ed30/Pirelli motor in the 35 rather than the TSI unit with the IHI turbo in the normal GTI (and my old rocco), for me engine is a cracker and was part of the appeal, coming from mapped cars the main thing you notice is the lack of torque in the mid range

i've always thought the mk6 had a more premium feel than the Scirocco and it does, it feels a better quality car in terms of how its put together, i am surprised how different in terms of cabin and engine noise it is compared to the Pirelli, has same GTI feel through road but feels a bit more grown up (which reminds me of the Mk6 R)

wheels are marmite but have a marmite mk5 sat on the drive, in reality it was brought for the engine  :happy2:

its a somber place but my last two cars have had leather and black roof linings so i am used to it, i am a massive fan of the GTI seats in terms of comfort and sportiness, the bolsters keep you firmly placed despite the leather, i love the hexagonal patterns on the door and dash trim and the seat belts take you back to the 18s, i'll take some more over the weekend

....I suggest putting '35' after the 'GTI' lettering inline, assuming it's ideally the same size height. Same could be applied to the bootlid.

GTI 35

little present arrived from VW today (I now have two as Mrs W got me one for Christmas)

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2FEd35%2FIMG_2139.jpg&hash=5fc574496b50a1673348e71c38df9b7947ab4158)

cars done 600 miles now so run in, can honestly say i do not miss the Scirocco at all, numerous reasons but you feel more connected to the car and VW have done well with the sporty zorst sound (which is similar to stock R i tried), really impressed with xenons and their range

now where is the slippery slope

Do we know how many 35's will be made?

Apparently not a "Limited Edition" so no limited run .
Sounds like they may have learnt a lesson from the Edition30 saga then.

well i stuck to my word and waited for the car to pass the 1,000 mile mark before it was remapped which it passed on the out skirts of daventry (in reality a boat would have been a better form of transport)

had the call from Revo the production stage 1 file was ready so popped along this morning for them to set things up and to give them some feedback on the road over the next week compared to the Pirelli (so mrs w will be let loose in it) as there are a few changes, the map goes live through the dealers later this month

next on the list is a cosmetic tweak  :happy2:

"Go Play!" is colloquial, very American, and very acceptable in advertising. It's simply not Queenie's English.

I thought you went 'understated' last time, Andy. That carbon grey begs for understatement. A touch of purple perhaps?

I like that the carbon grey is discrete and I like most of the oem touches on the GTI including the silver badges, I loved the rising blue on the rocco but never thought the chrome touches suited it or silver wheels (except on the R) and always liked the path I went on the rocco as a bit different

The additional wings did not aid the aero package and were a little detrimental to the inter cooler performance and will not be part of my Stage 2 plans going forward

a bit of bling for the engine

finally some pics of the gloss black diffuser so finally the car looks like it should have come out of the factory

before shot

I recomend the DD42 Shifter bushings to go in that cable end fitting.  Makes a nice difference and give a more sturdy quality & sporty feel imo

What is the benefit of switching to that linkage?  are you going to modify it to make it a shorter throw?  Damien Egan (Damoegan) on here can do it for you quite easily are far more cost effective way of getting shorter throw compared to Forges offering

Love the car mate

mike the s3 does have a shorter through but not quite to the extent of the VWR one i took off the rocco which is fine by me, also at £28 from the dealers they are a bit of a bargain :)

I had a look at the DD42s and they look quality items and will be considered if the S3 set is not to my liking

just finalising the game plan for Inters as waiting for a few bits and pieces to become valuable but suspension, arbs, engine mounts, the and stage 2 will be done

The part number on the shifter arm in the pic is the one quoted for the ED30 (BYD engine code).

Not sure what the engine code is for TTS or TTRS but there looks like there is 2 listed for the TT, 8J0 711 046 E (same as in the above pic (which is also same as mk2 LC)) and 8J0 711 046 D (presumeably TTRS)...

i think leaving it alone meant the first 1,000 miles  :happy2:

its readiness Shaun is dependant on some bits and bobs turning up as i want to do most in one hit and its going down a slightly different route to the rocco in components

so far the carbon grey has been a lot easier to keep on top of than the dbp on the Pirelli, rear of the mk6 attracts the most amount of grime, in reality car isn't doing monster miles so i'm not complaining, silver is easiest colour to keep on top of but never fancied that on the Ed35

prefer the GTI as feels the more complete car from the drivers seat :happy2:

car has been running the revised Stage 1 Revo file and also a new one for later cars which made some interesting figures on the dyno on monday depending how you like your coffee :)

first up zorst to replace the peashooters and so 3" Milltek TBE race system with the iddy silencers in the rear, will be sporting some 35 tips for Inters as gloss black on back order, quality is great and the clips for keeping tips in place are a work of art to cope with expansion

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fwigit71%2FEd35%2FIMG_2188.jpg&hash=9f11b2f38dbd9b3aab4575ed83ac66c2b3341d34)

Love the quality of these and ease of adjustment on the damping, conservative set up at the moment and whilst the ride is firmer the damping is superb and car especially at the rear

i have to say it was a close call between the Bilsteins and the new VWR AST setup, was massively impressed by the ASTs on their rocco and new two way was the way to go on a road car, the bit that put me off was you needed to lift the scuttle panel to adjust the fronts

Ed35 tips will probably make way for gloss black (which should arrive next week) to tie in with the diffuser more

final part of the mods undertaken are engine mounts, oddly when the Ed35 arrived i had second thoughts about doing these as its really a refined car, at Revo HQ i was tempted by theirs (they have refined the damping a bit to the previous incarnation) given the quality of them, on the Ed35 i wanted something between the THS and Vibratechnics in terms of feeling and feedback and Revo wanted some critical customer feedback on these

I have to admit i was a bit nervous about this one but have to say i really like them as they work really well as a package and the subframe kit slightly less harsh than the Vibratechnic set up i ran on the roc (i think its because i am now getting old), some vibration on start up, but not much when taking up the bite and the gear change is crisper, on the move their is a nice harmonic in the cabin but no real vibration, for me its exactly what i wanted on the Ed35 as wanted to tone things down a little from the rocco

car will probably stay in Stage 2 tune as i just love the way it feels and drives at the moment as a package, it feels like an old skool 80s/90s GTI and really reminds me of my old company 309 GTI Goodwood.

brakes and intake only other plans this year and maybe an alternate set of wheels

thought i'd take a couple of quick pics of the TSWs, ill take some better ones when it has settled and weather has improved, they tip the scales at 20kg with tyres compared to 22kg for the stock watkins glens, break clearance as has increased by 20mm

I think you can go a bit leftfield when you try wheels like that or something rarer/untried on a MK6 or very recent VAG car, but I think you've pulled it off very well.

Probably see them used a little more often in the next few years.

the 35 came with Contis SC2 and they are an improvement on those, prob will run Eagle F1s on stock rims to compare

i ordered from Demon Tweeks as they could do a better tyre deal and in reality were just a joy to deal with, they order these from TSW Europe

picked up the new daily driver this week to replace the Fiat 500TA, needed a more door so went for a Polo Blue GT in Blue Silk metallic to cope with 20k a year of commuting and to take the strain off the 35 and Pirelli (which should be making way for a Mk7 GTI PP) and pootling (hence the reg), spec wise went for:

xenons
anthracite wheels
sensors
privacy glass
auto climate
RCD510 and MFSW
Passeger airbag

only mods are to swap the bury bluetooth out for an oem VW one, possibly retro fit fogs

first run down to London and 48mpg on the trip which was a surprise (35 has been doing around 36mpg on same run), 1.4 is really well matched to the gear box and car has a surprising amount of torque and they do seem to bolt them together well

They are OEM Polo GTI trims you need two of these PN 6R0253825 and are around £18 each, they match the taper just need a little tap to get it on, agree its a cracking car and testament to that was i hadn't used the 35 for a couple of weeks

What's your average mpg of the blue?

on my commute its hitting 50-55mpg at the moment and isn't driven that economically

Decided at a couple of days notice to take a Road Trip to Germany with just the car, the tom tom and me, plan was:

- Harwich to Hook of Holland on Ferry
- Holland to Wolfsburg
- Visit Autostadt and VW Museum
- Wolsburg to Nurburgring
- Nurburgring to Calais via spa

Plan for the car was always to be set up for fast road use and capable of some track day action and car was faultless, coped with jams in Belgium, 150+ on the autobahn and the ring, a few pics of the car on its travels

Outside Autostadt

This is the 4 pot 330mm kit which is superb and coped with the ring and 150mph stops

The car is being put back to standard on 2nd January as it is being sold to make way for a MK7 R so bits will be appearing in the new year for sale  :happy2:

I see MTM have released a map for these.....360 bhp from just a stage 1 re map!!!

They seem to be ahead of the game!

Golf R is a great choice.....the new Haldex 4WD system seems to be far more complex and a big step on from the previous system...can't wait for a test drive as there is a demo coming to my local dealer in the next week or two.

What plans have you pencilled in for the R?

So had a loan R for a couple of months whilst one turned up with a black interior which happened to be leather and FOC so went for Pronav, big thanks to VW Wantage and VW, loaneR racked up 4,000 miles in a month and currently for sale on VW used car site  :happy2:

Had the mine for three weeks and things are starting to come together before off to Detail My Ride for some TLC

Spec:

3 door dsg
Lapiz Blue
Vienna Leather
Pronav
19" Pretorias
Winter Pack
DCC

Fed up of seeing pictures of stock Rs so thought you could see work in progress:

H&R lowering springs
Black washer cap
Black vinyl to mirror caps and bumper lip

Saw this on AKS Tuning Facebook page, he made a comment about the car only having 800miles on it  :signLOL:

The DCC shocks look a lot like the Rocco's shocks, is it definitely a different (better) system?

The H&Rs really make a difference here, looks soooooo much better.  Does the DCC system still work as effectively with the lower, stiffer springs?

I found on the Rocco that the H&R's took away some of the shocks ability to control the ride with less travel and stiffer springs

DCC is way better than the roc as you can adjust steering an throttle response, its firmer but not really worse

Is it same technology though on the shocks? IIRC Roc is oil level (therefore damping) controlled by a valve.

From reading your posts on Scirocco Central, you never seemed very impressed with that system

that system was totally flawed due to steering weighting being predetermined to which setting you had, this isn't, 300 mile test drive in a 7 GTI won be over

race mode isn't the fastest way from A-B in the UK in a 7R

Whats the deal with  ECU marker and warranty?

Thing is, if your 7R goes in for a dodgy electric window motor (for example), why would the dealer have any need to look at your ECU?
Title: Re: Ed35 - Polo Blue GT

Apparently that TD1 marker gets put back on (or off?) if stock file is flashed back on so you can't tell.

No they wont... but they might if your turbo blows up or sends a valve flying out of the bonnet.

I'd love Revo stage one on mine when it arrives. Can't believe how well they Perform. Hope you're enjoying it Andy! ;)

To a few others with regards to td1s

If your car would go in for a window motor.. It absolutely will be plugged into the obd diag tool, as a matter of course. Even if just for records sake. Then it will automatically scan every module... Again as a matter of course. All results will be sent back to head office... If the engine ecu is changed the a td1 will flag. All this will be done without any involvement to the dealer. Even if you are very friendly at the dealer, it's probably unavoidable to flag as a td1 of the engine has been modded. It might make no odds to why the vehicle is in at the time, but if a year later your engine goes bang you're up sh*ts creak.

I don't know if I have be balls to map mine :s

With the 35 I always got is flashed back to stock when going in for dealer work to avoid TD1 issues, will do the same with the R

Still not convinced on tuning boxes, no doubting peak numbers but how it drives etc seems unclear, also no one really put my mind at rest regarding how it safeguards stuff, especially when the likes of Superchips won't offer a warranty on there offering, each to their own

Car feels superb with the added power and mid range and flies, times are out there, big plus is how they have worked on throttle response, given it is on stock exhaust it is also a real sleeper which suits me for this

I am blown away with how good this car is and looking forward to the wife's night blue more door tuning up later in the year

I saw some feedback from another DSG 7R owner who was moaning about the inital pulling away hesitation, has the map helped this or is a DSG map required? (imagine Revo will bring one out in the next 12 months?)

So having it flashed back to stock removes the TD1 marker? Thats not too bad its that is the case.

Some R owners just need to learn how to move the ankle and toes a little better to apply the power

Car could benefit from DSG remap for manual mode as you can still get kick down

I did a fair bit of research on tuning boxes before getting one for my Merc. There is no doubting a map is the best way to go. But where the Tuning box wins is ease of installation and removal. When it's removed there is no evidence it was ever on and a manufacturer would have a hard time proving any issue that develops was down to a tuning box.

Brabus are the only company I know that warranty a car with a tuning box. The company that make the boxes for Brabus make the one I have. The only difference is about £1500+ in price and a label.

I doubt REVO, APR, GIAC etc would fix a car if there software broke it. The only ones I'm aware they have done are cars leant to them for development.

I recently drove a Mercedes with the same engine as mine which has a remap from a company widely regarded as the best at mapping Mercedes diseasel (they are the REVO of Mercedes world) and to be honest it's no different. The gear change is better but that is because they map the gearbox too when they do the map. Even the owner was surprised at how well the Tuning box on mine worked. It's no different to OEM.

But as you say each to there own. Mapping means £600ish everytime I change the car. At least with the Tuning box I can either get them to reflash to work on my new car or sell it on.
I may still map mine though. I just need to decide how long I am going to keep the car for as I still need to scratch that AMG V8 itch.

Bit of an update on the 7R, been busy driving it and currently in Europe in it

First up absolutely hated the H&Rs the worst mod I have done in 6 years of modding, totally ruined the ride and was a bit wild at higher speeds, replaced with a set of VWR springs, all be it the front springs were recalled, ride is much better, others have not got on with them, maybe its road dependent who knows, i'm hanging fire on coil overs until Bilstein release some DCC coil overs

Car had done 6K of mapped miles with Revo and just compliments the car so well

Pics with VWRs on

Not weighed them, all boils down to when hooning it around I like a bit more side wall and £105 a corner for super sports is cheaper on the consumable front, the nurburgrings are really light hence why I have kept them, I actually got used to the car with them, press need 5-8mm spacers

They are oem VW and called Rotary, they are in the accessories brochure and also an option on the GTI in the USA

It is nicely understated unlike my lapiz which is turning into a chav magnetic if i go out under the cover of darkness
